3M Steri strips should be part of everyone's emergency kit, and we've used them for years. They're perfect when you have a cut that isn't deep enough for stitches, but which needs to be held together for healing.
Last fall I cut myself on a piece of tin in our barn, and these saved me a trip to urgent care or the doctor. I let it bleed a little, then washed the wound out well with hibiclens. Once I dried around it with a paper towel, I applied some tincture of benzoin and when it had dried a little I applied the steri strips (using them to pull the edges of the cut together). The cut was a little over an inch long and I used three 1/8" strips across it. I covered the area with gauze and tape, and kept it covered for several days. The benzoin held the strips on longer and better than just the adhesive, and a week later it all peeled off by itself. It's been 6 months since I cut myself and the scar is barely visible. Even if I'd gotten stitches, there would have been a worse scar with the little dots the stitches leave.
I just bought this order of 10 packages (5 strips in each package) to replenish what we've used in the last few years. We keep and use them past the expiration date, as long as the package is sealed and sterile. The benzoin makes up for any loss of sticky-ness age might cause.
A word of advice: keep your tetanus booster up to date so cuts like mine don't give you tetanus. And, if you can't get the bleeding stopped, the cut is deeper than 1/4" or so, or you can't get it truly cleaned out, go see a doctor and have it cared for properly.
