This Gotrax Apex Max, at half the cost of my bigger scooter, is something I am glad to have in addition to my “heavy lifting” big scooter.
Assembly went super quick — much easier than my other scooter. The unit comes in two pieces — the base with the wheels and handlebar shaft, and the handlebar with display. There are basically three steps:
1. Pull out a cable from the shaft and handlebar and connect them together, then stuff it back in the shaft.
2. Put the brake cable end in a slot and run the cable through it.
3. Put the handlebars in to the shaft and use the included Allen wrench and two screws to tighten it in place.
The power supply is a base with the barrel connector on it, and a separate power cable that plugs in to it. There is a rubber cap you pop open to get to the charging jack, then you just plug it all in.
The manual says a RED light on the charger means charging, and GREEN means charged. When I plugged mine up, it immediately went to green and stayed green. However, turning on the scooter shows a battery meter with a four segment display which only showed three of them full. I found out later that I just did not have the barrel connector plugged all the way in. The charger shows green even when not plugged in. My second charge, I figured this out and was able to fully charge the scooter.
First ride only got 8 miles, due to not being fully charged. When the battery is on the last block of the four-segment display, it gives you no warning — it just starts to blink and that’s it. The intent of a short-range scooter like this is that you’d charge it regularly, versus a larger scooter that you might only charge every few dozen rides.
At 32 pounds, the scooter is about the same weight as four gallons of milk. When my back is having problems, I cannot carry my other scooter, so I expect this one will be very good at saving my back.
I contacted support to ask some questions (before I figured out how the charger plug works). I wrote them on Aug 28 4:38 pm, and they responded Aug 31 1:16am. That is a surprisingly fast response time, considering how late in the day I wrote them.
While my big scooter can handle large hills, smaller scooters like this are designed for more level community. I used the level app in my phone to test some hills. At a 2% incline, the scooter had no issue. Once the angle got to be around 5%, the scooter would slow down. It can still handle small hills — it just takes longer to get up to speed. Anything too steeper and this small scooter can’t do it. (I have two very large hills I travel regularly; I use my big scooter for that, and this for everything else.)
Folding down handlebar takes two hands. One has to left a lever and the other has to pull out a captive-pin. This is tricky to do at first, then becomes simple once you figure it out.
There is one power button on the control. It does the following:
1. Press it to turn power on.
2. Hold it down for about 5 seconds to turn power off.
3. Tap it to turn the headlight/taillight on. Tap again to turn it off.
4. Hold it for about 2-3 seconds to change gears (1 or 2, adjusting the max speed).
According to the Gotrax website, you can get up to 15 miles on a charge. I assume this to mean on flat surfaces with a lightweight rider. Since the scooter claims to handle riders of up to 265 pounds, I do not expect you’d see that same range with a heavier rider. I have taken my to 12, then I charge it back up since when you run out, it just stops. You get down to the last block of the four-segment power display then it shuts off the motor and starts blinking.
If you think you might become a scooter person, the thing to consider is: where will you be riding? If you have alot of hills, or are a heavier person and/or need extended range, you need to look at some of the higher end Gotrax models. If you want something for running around the neighborhood and do not have steep hills, this is where I’d start — its lightweight so you may actually use it. If you get a big heavy scooter and have to carry it up/down stairs to ride it, you may find yourself just getting in the car instead.
I have a much better/fancier scooter with more features, but now I only take it out when I need to go extended distances or tackle big hills. For all other trips, I am using this Gotrax. I even took it in the car on a weekend road trip so I’d have something with me in case I needed to run to a store to get something.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great lightweight scooter (32 pounds) for flat surface errands.I was never a “scooter person” until I got a large, heavy and expensive scooter two years ago. I soon was using it for places I used to drive to — to the store, to get a hair cut, etc. While I love that scooter, it was so big, bulky and heavy I never took it anywhere. I wanted something small that I could easily carry up/down stairs and load in to a car without back strain.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2022Style: 12mile 15.5mph blackVerified PurchaseThis is my first ever e-scooter.
By the time I writing this review, I've had it for 4 days. I've been using it everyday, except for the first day.
The first day is when I recieved it and where I had to assemble it and let it charge for 5 hours (entire day).
Second day, I rode it around the block to get used to the controls and movement. It has a display that shows the current speed of the scooter, whether the motor is in use or not. Also on the screen there is a mileage counter, showing how far I've traveled, I'm not sure if this counter goes up while the motor is not in use. I've only seen it change while I'm using the motor. One thing I had to remind myself is that I have to give the scooter a push before the throttle(motor) can kick in.
Third day, I rode it some more. Started getting used to the controls and balancing. I took time to figure out the cruise control although I'm still trying to get used to the different speeds. Just as advertised, it goes to 15 mph. The meter doesn't display decimals, so I'd never know if goes to 15.5 mph or higher. Cause even going down a hill, I feel like it goes faster, but the display seems to only go to a maximum of 15. Also on this day, it was very hot and I guess the motor overheated or something. All I know was it wouldnt let me ride it, cause it would display "E3". After 10 minutes passed, I was able to ride it again. Another thing is I learned different ways of turning. I'd stick my foot out, on the side I wanted to turn and lean my body out towards the other side of the scooter while knealing.
Fourth day, I actualy tried to travel somewhere far, at this point I knew when my batteries would go low to the point the motor wouldn't have enough juice. For some reason my scooter has only ever reached 10-11 mile distance; versus the 15 mile distance that's advertised on the amazon product description. Which is why I'm rating a low score. (I'm contacting the Support Team to see why this is, then change the score accordingly). Anyways, I was able to make it the my destination and back. I was very impressed cause the city I live in has good sidewalks and bike lanes; but sometimes there will be occassional bumps. The E-scooter was able to overcome those obstacles and even go up steep hills (30 degrees) going at an average of 11 mph. I was great to experience.
Fifth day, I took the same route as on the fourth day. Still had no issues, things went great.
I like this scooter; but one thing that's holding me back is the mileage. It advertises 15 miles, but from the past 4 days of testing I've only reached 10-11 miles. Which is 5 miles away from the promised 15 miles. Either I got a bad battery or the wrong scooter, hopefully tech support is able to help me with this part. If all goes well, I'd definitely recommend this scooter for people getting into E-Scooters.
One thing I still have to practice is getting used to 15 mph, cause at that poind I'm going so fast that the wind is audio. Which in my case, I'm not used to. Or maybe that means I need to get a bike helmet, either way I like the product. Just need to know I'm getting the correct product, before changing the rating.
I hope this review shows you how I used my scooter. Also originally bought it for college commute.
Update: 8/26/2022
Gotrax, helped me with the battery problem I was having. So now I can enjoy the scooter to it's fullest extent. I've had the scooter 07/26/2022.
I got a rear flat tire last week which sucks , probably from all the bumps I hit on the sidewalk. Also the motor can get hot at times. Heat and rubber doesn't mix well. When I checked the inner tube it had so many scratches on the inner area where the tube meets the motor. Tried patching it, but the patches didnt' stick well so I've been riding on a flat ever since school started (Monday). Scooter still managed to do well, dispite having to hear the flat tire squeel as I moved around.
Today (Friday) I finally had time to change the tire. I ordered a 8.5 inch Solid Rubber Tire, it was difficult to put on. But it beats having to change flat tires. I'm very happy. People say Solid Rubber Tires are uncomfortable, but then again I've been riding on a flat for entire week. So it's definitely been awhile since I had a "comfortable" ride. Either way this scooter is awesome. Also learned how to change tires and how to take care of my scooter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm free at last!
Style: 12mile 15.5mph blackVerified PurchaseThe media could not be loaded.
BUILD QUALITY AND FEATURES
The scooter is build very solid, no creaks or funny sounds when operating it, and it really feels like it could take a beating. The standing position has a rubberized grip on it so you don't slip off, and it can be carried easily while it is folded with one hand. It is about 30lbs, so I wouldn't walk everywhere with it, but its light enough that you can move it from one place to another. The additional features like a blinking red light on the back when the brake is pressed, an LED headlight, solid feeling kickstand, and a very large heads-up-display are nice additions too.
RIDE FEEL
The air filled tires are fantastic, driving over the pavement with crack, the sidewalk, or moving onto the sloped curb is seamless and doesn't feel like I'm going to be thrown off. There is no suspension on the scooter though so a larger drop or continuous bumps is going to be felt eventually. Steering the scooter was extremely easy to get a hang of and as someone who hasn't rode a bike in years, riding the scooter seemed like second nature.
SPEED AND DISTANCE
For speed and distance, it gets up to its advertised 15.5mph speed really quickly and the motor doesn't hesitate at all. I am 160lbs for reference. I was able to get up the inclines in my neighborhood no problem which are moderately steep of 5-7 degrees. For distance I was able to get it to my point of public transit and back to my home easily (which is about 8km total) and still have half of the battery left.
SUGGESTIONS
If there were a few things I would like improved in the scooter, first the included instructions are wrong, it tells you to remove the hook that clips the scooter closed when its folded to install the handlebars. You do NOT need to do this. I got pretty stumped right there wondering why there wasn't an included Allen key to remove that hook. Second, the bell is a little loose so it dings quietly when you're riding on the sidewalk or bumps, I might want to put a piece of tape on it. Third it would have been nice if the handle bars could have folded too, my garage is really tight fit and foldable bars would have helped with the tight space
While those are suggestions for improvements, it doesn't take away the fact this is an excellent electric scooter for the money and now my days of being stuck in the parking lot of the transit station is now over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good in it's class.
Style: 12mile 15.5mph blackVerified PurchaseI don't know how my review ended up in the Apex description. It was for the GXL v2 model?
Ok, first it takes a bit of getting used to. It's my first scooter, I expected more easy balancing than that but you have to get used to it gradually. You have to learn to position your body, feet, shift according to how you're moving, be careful about shifting feet position while moving, etc.
I'm 165 lbs and I could get it to 15.5 mph - edit: GPS measures say it is 13.3 mph - without any problem. But it does not exceed 15.5 mph. Even going downhill with the throttle. The new models are limited to that speed I read.
I was able to go up an overpass (150-200 meters of climb, at maybe 7° ? ), and at 13 mph at first and then gradually slowing to 11.4 mph. Not bad.
I only rode for 3 miles, and there were 3 bars out of 4 left. But when I plugged in the charger, the lights were green???? Hmm, can I trust this. (Edit: I unplugged the charger, and plugged it back, the lights are red).
I'll make a longer test, try to push it to the max and report here. Edit: I did a 6.6 miles test, held an average 10.1 mph, though traffic slowed me a while, I could have done 10.5 mph average I guess. Max speed 13.3 mph. All this calculated by GPS. There was one bar and a blinking 2nd bar, out of 4 left. 2.5 miles per bar?
However it's a sturdy scooter, the stem is hard, a bit massive, the wheels are tough and thick (pneumatic but tough), slimed (a puncture sealing substance) it seems. There's Locktite or something on the screws. A substance to secure screws.
All in all seems good for short - 10-12 miles - commutes. If you don't push the throttle to the maximum.
The plastic stuff (the latch for the stem when you fold it) seems a bit cheap.
The scooter is easy enough to lift but if you had to walk with it for several minutes you might find that hard. But the wheels roll easily so you can roll it while folded or opened.
Overall, besides the balancing issue at first, it's fun, and it makes getting around easy. Moving at 13 mph 60% of the time seems realistic-then it falls to 11. For me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good scooter
It is a very good scooter. I’ve had no problems with it. Charges very well. It is good enough to carry when folded down. Very easily the latch down and up no problem it is wonderful, and I have no problems with it. Highly recommend it, and eventually I will be buying one for my daughter. This scooter is very good for adults and teenagers who are learning on electric scooter and also who don’t want to go very fast. And it goes as fast as it say. It is very good to quickly go down to the nearest mall or store or good for a Park.

4.0 out of 5 stars APEX: Well-Designed, Better Features but perhaps with Less Quality Control
Style: 12mile 15.5mph blackVerified PurchaseBought two of them a week apart: The Apex, and then the Elite. In short, I would highly recommend the Apex as it is better designed, and I find the Elite to be over-rated and not worth the extra money. I’ll put this same review under both scooter models, so if you’re looking at either one, you can do the comparison.
The APEX: Well-Designed, Better Features but perhaps with Less Quality Control.
Right out of the box I noticed the electrical wire inside the stem was partially ripped (see picture). I taped it up and assembled it, and it worked, so no problem. The instructions were wrong, asking to disassemble the hook for the brake wire. It’s not necessary on the Apex. I charged it overnight and next morning it turned on, but pressing the accelerator did nothing, so I thought it was defective. Turned out, you have to push the bike and get it rolling before the motor will engage. That’s not mentioned at all in the manual (terrible).
Otherwise, I’ve clocked about 30 km on the bike and It’s been great. Range should be as specified, as my first trip was about 12 km, and it showed 2 bars out of 4 for battery life afterwards. Other features I really like about the Apex:
1. Large display – shows speed and lights on, and also a trip odometer and cruise control indicator (both of which are not present on the more-expensive Elite)
2. Rear disc brakes and rear-wheel drive. Works way better than the front-drive, front brakes on the Elite.
3. Frame is solid, with no jolting when the brakes are applied.
4. Battery life is per specification, and indicator seems to be accurate based on distance travelled. Much better system compared to the Elite, which indicates battery life based on load.
Other reviews have been super helpful, and all the things they mentioned, such as motor works well going uphill, the air-filled tires absorb shock, cruise control works well, and just FUN FUN FUN to ride, were all true and helpful in my decision to buy the APEX. Thank you to all the earlier reviewers.
The ELITE: Lacking Features of the APEX, and Battery Life Seems Inferior
After spending a week with the Apex, I wanted to get one for my wife, but didn’t want to get the exact same scoot, so decided on the Elite. When unboxing, I didn’t have the quality issues as the Apex, and I like the look of the Elite. It’s bigger, has a thicker stem and wider deck, and looks similar to the rental scoots like Lime and Bird. But aside from these, I think the Elite falls short compared to the APEX.
Most notable is the battery life. I went 6 km and the battery indicator showed 2 bars left out of 4. The indicator is either calibrated incorrectly, or the range is worse than the Apex (but the Elite battery is bigger). As indicated above, the Elite battery indicator seems to read real-time based on load. You see it drop to one bar when going uphill, but back to 3 bars when you come to a stop. That’s totally confusing, because all I need to know is how much reserve power is left so I know how much range I have left.
Other dislikes about the Elite:
1. The small display does not show trip odometer (how do you know how far you’ve travelled?) nor have a cruise control ON indicator.
2. The front drive motor is louder. Would much prefer the rear-drive setup.
3. It has front regenerative brakes as well as rear disc brakes. The front can’t be adjusted by users. It kicks in before the rear brakes, and jolts the whole bike. I would prefer the Apex’s rear-disc only which seems to stop adequately and is much more stable. If the regenerative brakes are truly recharging the battery, then it must be a trickle, because battery life still seems poor.
4. So far, battery life and range sucks. Maybe that will get better with a few more full charges, but even if it does, won’t surpass the range on the Apex. I don’t have the guts to ignore the indicator and run a 24 km trip, in fear I’ll be stranded far from home.
Reviewers love the Elite, but most haven’t had opportunity to compare it side-by-side with another scoot. The Elite looks great, and has the same FUN factor as the Apex. It’s possible I got a lemon and everyone else’s works the way it should, with a full 28 km range, quiet motor, properly adjusted brakes and a solid stem. Notwithstanding, for $100 more, you’re getting less, and I recommend the Apex over the Elite any day of the week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable, cheap, but only 10 miles of charge.
Style: 12mile 15.5mph blackVerified PurchaseThis is the best of the best for electric scooters on a budget, it's cheap to use, extremely durable, and can handle going through the rain, I've put mine through its paces, done 10 times more with it than advertised and it still works like new, the only change I made was putting solid rubber tires on it to avoid punctures and flat tires. The only complaint I have with it is at best you will average 10 miles per charge and 12 - 13 miles in perfect conditions other than that This is the perfect scooter for beginners and for people who are on a budget and need a good way around.
