Sounds Like A Cult

Putting the “cult” in culture… Do you think SoulCycle is a cult? What about the Royal Family? What about Disney Adults? Or spiritual influencers? Is Instagram itself a cult? We’re Sounds Like A Cult, an iHeart Radio Award-winning podcast that analyzes a different fanatical group every week to try and answer the big question: This ~sounds~ like a cult, but is it really? Created and hosted by New York Times-bestselling author Amanda Montell, co-hosted and produced by Chelsea Charles and Reese Oliver. Sounds like a lot of ads.

I’ve enjoyed the show, but c’mon.
I use to like it

I think it’s a fun podcast but recently when I listen to it, it’s blowing my ears off about booking.com but I can’t hear the podcast. Sorry, it’s too overstimulating today is my last day listening and I’m unfollowing. I tried to keep listening but I can’t hear it but I do where to book a hotel……
SLAC 2.0 is killing it

I have really been enjoying the new era of the show! The new cohosts have been great additions and the interviews have a good balance between well-informed/thoughtful and light-hearted moments. Just listened to the episode on Kundalini Yoga and HIGHLY appreciated the interview guests! They had great perspectives and insights.
Too Hyper

It’s more like teenagers gossiping than a podcast.
Love Amanda

The bad reviews are exceedingly harsh (bordering on weirdly hateful)… this is an upbeat conversation-style podcast focused mainly on pop/contemporary culture. If you want a serious, in-depth analysis of hard-hitting topics, listen to Magical Overthinkers (or another podcast?). Overall, I find Amanda to be insightful, witty, kind/respectful/empathetic, and an entertaining host.
Sounds Like a Squarespace Ad
Apr 16
this used to be a solid 4, sometimes 5 for me, but lately the amount, length, and placement of ad breaks has made it truly unbearable. i understand that ads make free podcasts possible, but it’s gone from from an ad at the beginning, middle, and end of each episode to a half dozen breaks scattered thoughtlessly throughout, each rambling on for 3 straight minutes about squarespace or booking.com or whatever new hair/skin/shapewear product is trending it completely ruins the cadence of the conversations and it’s no longer worth the effort to listen to — it’s almost as if we’re being forced into subscribing to patreon if we want an enjoyable experience? i know this isn’t an airport, nor do i need to announce my departure, but i’ve officially unsubscribed after today ✌️
SLAC is back!

I abandoned this show a long time ago but came back after giving Amanda’s other podcast a shot. I’m loving this new iteration of SLAC!
Innovative and addictive

I love this show so much! It is a refreshingly creative and light-hearted pod that reflects on pop-culture and our society at large. I binged this show when I first came upon it. Now I look forward to new episodes every Tuesday!
Jill “Literal Garbage” Duggar ?? Really?
Apr 1
Interesting choice to have Jill Duggar on the show. I feel that this discussion could’ve been had without giving platform to a vocal Trump supporter, along with her husband, who infamously went on a transphobic tirade on twitter against a literal child. No information or insight was given by her that couldn’t be found either in her books, or in transcripts from previous interviews. Actually kinda unacceptable and disappointing that we’re highlighting bigots on this show now
Real cults?
Apr 1
We are living in an era of true cult thinking and the repercussions are genuinely disastrous to innocent people across the globe- like those being exterminated and ethically cleansed in Gaza. How could a pod attempting to explore human nature in this particular context not talk about the insane, distorted rationale of the folks who are justifying genocide? This is our generation’s holocaust. This would presumably be Amanda’s big moment- as this is her area of expertise- but it appears that she is not brave enough to meet the moment.
