each naturalistically modelled as a bundle of asparagus spears tied at either end, one with red anchor mark to the cover and numeral 17 to both the base and cover, the other with red anchor mark and numeral 15 to the base.

Please note: the numeral painted on the interior of the base of the second tureen is 51, not 15. Some very minor occasional wear to the enamels of the asparagus tips and the molded twine; the tip of one asparagus spear has a very minor pinhead chip. Otherwise, both tureens and covers are in generally good condition.

Asparagus tureens and stands are mentioned in the 1756 Chelsea Sale Catalogue, First Day's Sale, March 29th, lot 15: "Two fine bundles of asparagus and plates;" see George Savage, 18th-Century English Porcelain, Appendix VIII, p. 354, where the catalogue is reproduced. A similar pair of tureens, from the Collection of Dr. Sidney and Susan Merians, sold in these rooms, October 22, 2010, lot 19 and another similar pair was sold at Sotheby's in London, July 15, 2004, lot 132.
