Fast, compact and yes, APK compatible!
5 out of 5 stars
Fast, compact and yes, APK compatible!
I was a Roku fan for many years and would probably have kept using it if one of my Roku devices hadn’t suddenly stopped working. I was thinking to get another one, a newer model, improved one, but while browsing Amazon found its real competitor - FireStick 4K Max which was on almost 50% sale so I had to try it. Well, in few words - overall not even a second of disappointment. First of all I wanted to mention - all my Rokus are not the latest models, so there is no surprise the latest 4K Max really beats my other devices in speed and performance. I am pretty sure the latest Roku works as fast but can’t confirm it. Probably, and I won’t try to say Roku isn’t good or any worse at all since I couldn’t compare latest apples to another brand latest apples yet. Yes, this 4K FireStick is FAST! Very fast! Navigating through the apps and channels is seamless with unbelievably quick response. And there is a certain feature I discovered that definitely over performs the Roku, and this feature is a game changer for me and my personal approach to streaming devices today. Roku is a device that runs under its own ecosystem, and in basic words its operating system won’t allow me any side apps to be installed and enjoyed. Whatever Roku has in its database can be installed directly from their store and you basically stuck with the only official apps they offer in the store. And I was pleasantly surprised that FireStick did allow me to download and install the third party APK file for the APP I’ve been using for I don’t know how many years, and that APP had to be installed on my laptop which was connected to my TV allowing me to use it and watch my streams on a big screen. It still worked for me, but wasn’t as convenient since I now have that app installed directly on my FireStick. And this is a big reason why I will probably start gradually switching my streaming devices to Fire devices. To be honest I’m not a geek in streaming devices, so can’t really have any serious discussions about how come is it possible, but seems to me that Fire OS installed on all fire devices is connected to or somehow compatible with Android, allowing to work with APK files. And the compatibility with APK files gives the FireStick virtually unlimited possibilities, allowing it to be used beyond the official store. In my opinion, this gives it an edge today. The stick itself is very compact, plugs directly into an HDMI port and ready to use right out of the box. Love the idea as many of other Amazon devices it was preset before arrival and I did not have to set up my account for a new device (of course Amazon asked me first if I want to link it to my account before arrival). Another life changer was found in a box - a short HDMI extension cord. My TV is packed with HDMI cables - home theater system, another TV box, game console etc. TV is placed on a wall with the simplest wall mount which doesn’t tilt. And trust me it looks awesome, and keeps my TV as close as possible to the wall (just the way I want it). It works great until I need to do something behind the TV, like hooking a new device for example. So, I literally had only one HDMI port available, of course it was in between of other HDMI ports, and other HDMI ports cables wouldn’t allow me to plug the FireStick directly to the TV for only one simple reason - the sticks body is wider than any of the cables and there is no way to plug it in between of other HDMI cables. And provided extension cable gave me the opportunity to do it hassle free without removing the TV from the wall and thinking of changing my set up. Such a simple thing but gave me a huge relief to simplify my setup process! Remote: besides standard buttons it has 4 preprogrammed ones that direct you straight to the one of your preferred (most popular) streaming services. I don’t use 2 of them and now thinking if I am able to reprogram those unused buttons to work with the apps I want (not sure if it’s possible though but common sense tells me it should work somehow, just still need to make a research I guess). Voice control or Alexa button attracted my attention as well and it is also a live changer for me. I don’t type anymore trying to find my favorite movie, I just say and it works. While watching I don't have to shout over the TV anymore to make my other Alexa devices to hear me. I just press the button and she hears me right away. Also using my new remote I basically don’t need my original tv and home theater remotes anymore (well, almost lol). FireStick remote allows me to control my tv environment (on/off, volume etc.). The only downside I experience with the remote I wish it has backlit buttons, or anything that improves visibility at a dark. I have to use my phones flashlight on evenings or ask Alexa to turn the lights on while playing with the remote. A bit inconvenient and definitely needs an improvement. Channels and apps: nothing to complain about here. Apps can be placed in any order I prefer so I don’t have to navigate through ton of them looking for a one I need. A lot of free channels, paid ones, free cloud games (really decent ones). I bought a pair of PS5 compatible game controllers and was able to easy pair them through Bluetooth with the stick. Whole process took about 10 seconds. Please note that FireSticks Bluetooth is kind of demanding - I couldn’t make it work with my simple Bluetooth keyboard - some requirements were not met and it didn’t work for me. But I was able to install a fire tv app on my phone and use it as a keyboard which definitely simplifies my browsing experience. So just great! A lot of power, performance and convenience in one little device. Oh yes, WiFi 6 compatibility gives me something to think about a future - this stick will be good for years, many years. I truly don’t think I will be back with any other competitive devices anymore (never know lol but) and since I’m trying to setup an Amazon ecosystem around my house, this further strengthens my confidence. Highly recommended product! As said the remote buttons dark environment visibility issue is still in tact, but for this price, ton of features, ability to install APK files and Alexa integration I can live with that backlit concern and still leaving it 5 stars in my rating. By the way truly believe this backlit issue definitely will be fixed in future models and we will be probably offered to buy an extra remote separately. We will see. Of course if anything goes wrong I will post an update here later but certainly not today. Hope someone will find my review helpful.

Typically I use AppleTV and Roku in my home. Recently I’ve gotten more into gaming again and in that process stumbled upon xcloud gaming from Xbox. I tried it on my tablet and wanted to try on a larger screen. Screen mirroring didn’t work, the latency was horrendous, and Apple doesn’t have support for Xbox xcloud services by default. I was about to order an adapter from Apple to output HDMI for my tablet. The price? $49.99. Seemed steep for a cord but was going to bite the bullet until I heard Firestick had the support I was looking for and that they had a sale on the newer firestick. For a little more than half the cost of the adapter, I opted to buy the firestick and I do not regret it at all. It does everything I need it to do and does it well. The upgraded Wi-Fi features(6/6e) are absolutely amazing if you’re running a proper router that supports it. Latency is near non existent. Even with heavier demand titles on xcloud it rarely has a stop or stutter. It’s small, but definitely packs a punch. Ease of use means switching from tv to tv takes mere moments and you’re back up and good to go. Excellent design overall and I appreciate the extensive list of controller support. In testing ps4/5, Xbox one/series s/x, 8bitdo, and a few off brand/generic have connected without issue. I can’t speak on the new Luna controller for now, but considering how this device performed, I think the controller will be my next purchase to use alongside my new Firestick.

Typically I use AppleTV and Roku in my home. Recently I’ve gotten more into gaming again and in that process stumbled upon xcloud gaming from Xbox. I had become exasperated trying to get by using a "smart" Sony Bravia TV for all my streaming services. It sort of worked but didn't work well. Slow, cumbersome, and prone to freezing up (especially with Hulu for who knows what reason.) I had previously used Directv streaming, which was functional but expensive. I then had a brief flirtation with a Tivo streaming stick, which had potential, but needed rebooting more times than could be counted. I was reluctant to go with a Fire because of its alienation from Google and the wondrous Play Store. But I finally decided to give this a try -- partly because I have had recent good experiences with Echo devices and Alexa. The 4k Max seemed like the best choice because of its larger storage. I reconfigured my system somewhat by plugging the Fire into a Yamaha receiver HDMI rather than the TV. I believe this helped achieve success -- with a more straightforward audio integration. The installation process was very smooth. Hulu, MAX, Apple, Peacock, Paramount+, Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney all installed and fired up without a hitch. I was annoyed that Google Play wasn't available and that a key mapper for the remote was apparently forbidden. But navigation and app loading were delightfully fast, and the stick quickly became friends with my Echo Dot. Alexa made changing between streaming services easy, and a more social experience -- albeit artificial. VLC was available and worked perfectly with my network storage drive. I was wary of the wireless network connection, but a test showed ample speed. I have had no internet glitches so far, and no freeze ups or weird behaviors in general. I want to get a remote with a few more shortcut buttons, but the supplied one works fine. Overall a better experience than I had dared to hope for. So far so good.

Very capable streamer. Straightforward remote. The unit seems to have ample computing power and memory. Therefore it’s very fast. Drives 1070 line displays to perfection. Lots of sound options. Should control most complex home AV systems with just one remote. Basic install was easy. BUT Some streaming services are very very obsessed about security. Just be patient and it will all work. It happens on all the streaming hardware devices. Not their fault. Once it’s all installed, it performs flawlessly. Appears to easily control your audio system and TV. AZ had it on sale so I went top shelf.

Works great. Sound quality is fantastic. Video is crisp. There is nearly no buffering unlike the previous edition. It was easy to set up since I already had an earlier version of Fire stick. The design is very functional and I paid a very fair price for what was received.

Other reviews have said it all for pros
    Snappy performance and speed
    Very functional
Just scan and login for apps

Downsides I found within hours of use
Micro USB ? - why when USB C is standard - yet another cable to carry
No security once lost - the finder can use it to watch and buy content. Why can’t a simple password option be put after power on ? Not that difficult to implement - esp leaving it behind in a hotel/airbnb is a common use case !
Come on Amazon and Andy Jassy - you can do it !
