The shelves sag :(LeoneI installed two large Billy bookcases about 9 months ago and the shelves on both are sagging. Some of the shelves even have mostly paperback books on them, so they are not overloaded. A bookcase should be able to hold books. I have had many bookcases in my life and never had this issue even with heavy books. I'm very disappointed that these shelves apparently will have a very short life. I can replace with real wood shelves, but I shouldn't have to. I would not purchase these again and am very sad -- I thought these shelves were so popular because they are worth buying, and I had confidence in Ikea making good quality products. So disappointed.
Better than expectedMartaBought 4 white Billy bookcases to line a living room wall and have assembled 2 so far. Pleasantly surprised at the quality and ease of assembly. Had 2 tiny scrapes on underside of 1 shelf but placed as bottom shelf so not noticeable at all. Quite easy to assemble except needed help with sliding back panel into grooves and maneuvering bookcases into place. Appreciate ease of attaching back panel with supplied holes and attachments (as opposed to fighting with back panel to stay lined up and trying to nail tiny nails into bookcase frame). Great value for the price. Added two Oxberg doors to one bookcase -- nice quality and easy assembly with some minimal tweaking to align them. Just a side note - know that while they are packed well, there is no protection inside box from damage should your knife go through box, so be conscious of that when positioning knife when opening box.
Better than ever!JuliaI bought these to replace the black Billy bookcase I bought in 1997. See improvements and construction and assembly are fantastic! Now the backing folds like an accordion and is easily inserted in grooves. And it is much more durable. Before it was too panels that you had to clumsily hammer to the back. This color, I think called Oak is a great addition. I am beyond happy with this purchase. Furthermore, they were $20 less than they were in 1997. I had them delivered and the delivery guys were great. Not only did they bring them to my door but they brought them into my apartment.

Horrible SherelI can’t get it to stay up I just gave up and threw one in the basement I wanted to return it but ikea don’t offer pickup like any other big company so my money is completely wasted the parts to this bookshelf is so cheaply made I have pictures I wish there was a option to share them

The perfect bookshelf JettaI was really happy with this bookshelf, I am preparing to order a second one already to redecorate my living room. It was very easy to put together. (Please keep in mind that all I have on my shelf are DVD movies, Funko pops and Legos) At first I was skeptical and thought we would have to attach it to the wall to make sure it didn't tip over but with this design it has a curve at the bottom for the trim on the wall so it lays flat against the wall. Absolutely happy with this purchase and great quality for the price.

Super easy to buildReynaI really love the Billy bookshelf! I ordered it delivery and it was such a smooth transition, it was delivered right to my door and considering how heavy it was I was happy I paid the 20 dollars. Once out of the box, the instructions were very comprehensive and easy to follow. It took about an hour and half to take out and put together. I didn’t have an extra person to help but the only part where it would’ve come in heady was when putting together the sizes and putting the completed bookshelf upright. But it is doable with one person. The only reason it was a 4/5 stars is because two out of the 7 shelf pieces came with ripped vinyl and it wasn’t a fixable thing, that only upside to that is that they were the ones that you place in after the overall skeleton was put together so I was able to place those two shelves towards the bottom facing down and you can’t see it unless you look underneath.

What is particleboard?
Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.

"It was 40 years ago I got the assignment to design a simple, functional and smart storage solution for books. I couldn't have imagined then that BILLY bookcase would wind up in so many homes across the whole world. I remember being especially pleased with the adjustable shelves and the depth of the bookcase - perfect for books. We were also able to transport it in a flat pack - an idea I was actually first to develop. The bookcase is still one of my favorites and I hope it continues to be around for many more years."
