About the author

Barbara Taylor Bradford, OBE, is one of the world's best loved storytellers. Her 1979 debut novel, A Woman of Substance, ranks as one of the top-ten bestselling books of all-time, with more than 30 million copies in print. All her novels to date have been major worldwide bestsellers.
Barbara was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, the only child of Freda and Winston Taylor. She grew up in the Leeds suburb of Armley and left school at 15 for the typing pool at the Yorkshire Evening Post. At 16 she was a reporter, and at 18 she became the paper’s first woman’s page editor. By the time she was 20, she had moved to London where she became a fashion editor and columnist on Fleet Street. Barbara started writing fiction when she was just seven, and sold her first short story to a magazine for seven shillings and sixpence when she was ten years old.
Barbara’s books have sold more than 91 million copies worldwide in more than 90 countries and 40 languages. Ten of her books were made into Emmy-nominated miniseries and television movies by her late husband, the film producer Robert Bradford.
In 2007, Barbara was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for her contributions to literature. A passionate supporter of literacy, she is an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust; in 2019 she was made an ambassador for Women in Journalism and in the same year she was presented with The Leeds Award, which recognised her loyalty to, and depiction of, her Yorkshire roots. Her original manuscripts are archived at the Brotherton Library at Leeds University, alongside the works of the Bronte sisters. She lives in New York City.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2024The book features a young English servant girl with an indomitable will who goes on to conquer the world of business and displays unusual strength and resilience and above all integrity throughout all. She seeks revenge on those who harmed her in the best of ways by achieving excellence and surpassing them. She experiences great loves, as well. She is every one of us wome
n, at the best we can be, in our careers, as lovers and wives and as mothers. She's a role model but not a goodie two shoe. She's a force to be reckoned with. Although the writer is very good and you can improve upon your vocabulary, it is also easy to read. It's the kind of book you could read for three days straight. Dying to know what happens. It's a character you will remember and identify with long after you have finished the book. And it's a book that you will be sad to finish. Fortunately there are at least two sequels that are just about as good as this one and continue with the story of the family dynasty she created. This book should be considered a classic. As a former librarian and lifelong extremely avid reader, I can surely say this is one of the great books of my life. It has so many emotions and experiences that all women live through in their own lives. She could be your sister your mother your grandmother or you could see yourself in her. And the message it leaves is to endure with hope and bravery. You won't regret purchasing it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025A long read but beautifully written. Hard to put down. Barbara Taylor Bradford is one of the best novelists I have read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2015I gave Women of Substance a 4-1/2 star rating. I knew the book was large and the beginning dragged on. The author, I thought, went into too much detail about every little thing. I did skip over many paragraphs. Too much info that wasn't necessary. But boy, am I glad I stuck with this book. I read it every chance I had. Emma was an amazing women, very determined and had many husbands, children and grandchildren.
When reviewing a book I do not like going into details about the story. But let me tell you this this book is worth reading. Especially if you like reading about how the rich and the poor live years ago. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2025I love this book. I have probably read it at least 3 times and it never gets old. One of my favorite all time books. I promise it will not disappoint

- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024An absorbing saga of the trials and tribulations of an extraordinary woman. I highly recommend this excellent novel to any woman wanting to understand what “substance” actually means.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2024A satisfying read about a determined woman overcoming a lifetime of adversity to emerge triumphant in the setting of class consciousness England.
Very satisfying!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2013It is amazing how much time can change our perception of things. I first read this book many years ago and vaguely remember enjoying it. Twenty or thirty years later, after a second reading, I find it infuriating.
The author dragged out this story with unnecessary padding and description. I could handle that, just, but the omniscient narrator added to my ever increasing annoyance with the main character, Emma Harte. When the reader is able to see into every character's thoughts, and every person is thinking how absolutely wonderful this irritating, vindictive woman is, it begins to grate on the nerves.
Then there is the matter of Emma's dramatically fast switch from having a strong, fairly uneducated Yorkshire accent to suddenly not having one. Yes, she did learn from listening to her employers' refined voices, and from correction by her first love, but the sudden switch to having a completely passable genteel voice was just too much to believe.
At this stage in my life, Emma's behaviour pushed way too many buttons. By the end of the book, I just wanted it to be done. Apart from her over the top vendetta, she did the one thing as a parent I consider odious. She played favourites with her children and then with her grandchildren. As for the grandchildren, sneaky, suck ups for the most part, all too happy to verbally knife their aunts and uncles to win points with their grandmother.
I probably would give it 2 stars, and yet I have to take into account that this book was written a long time ago and attitudes have perhaps changed. My feelings toward It definitely have. So to be fair, I'll rate it right in the middle of the road. I had originally planned to read the whole series, but my aversion to the character, her granddaughter and the storytelling style in this has made me stop right here, at the end of Book 1.
