Kirk Douglas Signature Gibson SG

Gibson

collapse expand iconDescription

"Captain" Kirk Douglas of The Roots has a stellar reputation for versatility and taste in his playing. One of his principal guitars is three-pickup Gibson SG Custom. Working with Gibson USA to develop an expanded version of this guitar, the result is the Kirk Douglas Signature SG. This all-mahogany version from Gibson USA expands on the original early '60s edition with enhanced electronics and switching. These additions turn a great guitar into an amazingly versatile instrument reflecting the abilities of the player from whom it derives its name. The Gibson USA Kirk Douglas Signature SG is ideal both for fans of Douglas and The Roots, and for any player seeking a tremendously flexible guitar for rock, soul, funk, neo-soul and more.

Gibson Kirk Douglas Signature SG Main Features

BurstBucker 1, 2, and 3 pickups with independent volume controls, master volume and tone and three-way selector switch
Gloss-finished solid mahogany body with signature elements
24.75"-scale solid mahogany neck with bound 22-fret rosewood fingerboard
Nashville-style Tune-o-matic bridge, "Captain" signature lyre tremolo tailpiece, GraphTech Nut, Keystone tuners

Flexible Electronics

The unique pickup and switching system in the Kirk Douglas Signature SG is both where it differs most from a vintage SG Custom and where the magic of its versatility lies. BurstBucker 1, 2 and 3 pickups are all used, in order of increasing gain, for neck, middle and bridge positions. Combined with the independent individual volume controls and pickguard-mounted master volume, this creates a virtually endless assortment of possible tones. The middle pickup is independent of the 3-way pickup selector, so it’s always available to blend into any position. Each pickup also has a coil-split available on its push/pull volume knob, adding the possibility of single-coil sounds to the tonal stew. This is easily one of the most flexible setups on any electric guitar available today.

All-Mahogany Construction

The Kirk Douglas Signature SG also features classic Gibson all-mahogany construction. As a tone wood, mahogany is known for warmth and punch in solid-body guitars, and it's an excellent foundation to underlie the strengths of this particular instrument. The iconic SG body style is graced with Inverness Green and Ebony gloss finishes.

Classic Hardware

The hardware for this signature model was carefully chosen. The most striking feature is the "Captain" signature lyre-plate vibrato tailpiece, which echoes back to the early SG Custom in its most deluxe configuration. The guitar uses the Nashville-style Tune-o-matic bridge and non-locking Keystone tuners. The hardware plating is nickel for the Inverness Green version and gold for the ebony finish.

Other touches for this unique guitar include a ultra-smooth GraphTech nut, Gibson split-diamond headstock inlay, block fingerboard inlays starting at the first fret, black top hat knobs with silver or gold insets to match the hardware and a deluxe hardshell case.
