The French architecture & design studio joins The Invisible Collection with
Uchronia Wave,
a debut line of furniture that will make quite a splash!

If you’re looking for a fresh take on shapes and textures, look no further, because we have a new selection of designs that will fit the bill! We are delighted to introduce the debut collection of furniture by Uchronia, a multidisciplinary architecture & design collective founded by Julien Sebban.

The name Uchronia draws from a neologism coined by Charles de Renouvier, a 19th century French philosopher who brought forward the concept of alternative worlds, a sort of unbridled “what if”…  That’s precisely the starting point of “Uchronia Wave”, the first collection created by Julien and a team of highly skilled artisans – including decorative painters, wood marquetry specialists and Raku masters.

What if the traditionally monochromatic raku tiles were multicoloured? What if the ancient Venetian marble-like stucco usually applied to walls were to enliven a lovely coffee-table? Driven by his strong desire for experimenting with shapes and materials, Julien Sebban has delivered a playful collection of furniture defined by unexpected colour combinations and enticing details.

The fifteen-piece offering includes the cheerful Peanut coffee and dining tables, the Cookie coffee tables – specially designed for the Museum of Modern Art in Paris -, and the sculptural Sunny 2 chair for two, – a design befitting these times of social distancing…

We caught up with Julien for a quick chat about inspiration, colours and superior craftsmanship:

What drew you to interior architecture and design and what do you like the most about it?

For me, architecture and interiors are so important, not only for shelter but for our well-being. Space affects our mood, how we feel and act. An interesting space can challenge, comfort or even revive us. This work allows me to be creative, whilst working within the client’s instructions. I love interacting with my clients, trying to make spaces that reflect their personality and needs. I love the fact that there are endless possibilities and ways of meeting our clients’ demands.

Can you describe your work and style in a few words?

Inspired by nature, geometry and colour, we are not afraid of creating bold and playful pieces and spaces. We love exploring the possibilities of the various métiers and craftspeople we work with, each challenging the other to push the materials and possibilities further.

The piece of furniture you most like to design?

When we’re designing spaces, we love to include pieces from our favourite designers. When we don’t find what we are after, we design something that fits that specific purpose or requirement. When we find a gap, we try and fill it!

The most useful piece of design related advice you’ve received and would like to pass on?

One of my lecturers at the AA (Architectural Association) used to tell us to be ourselves and not to be afraid of colour!

What do you like about The Invisible Collection?

The variety of talents, and the opportunity for a young designer to be on its roster, next to established and respected names.
