An introduction to Villa Bellagio

What was the inspiration and story behind Villa Bellagio?

We spent four years looking all over Italy for a house with frescoes to purchase. Eventually, we found a property near Rome and waited nine months for the settlement, only for something to go wrong at the last minute, resulting in us losing the deposit. To make ourselves feel better, we decided to visit this house the following day, although we’d decided it was too expensive when we’d seen it a couple of years earlier.

It was in fairly bad condition and didn’t look as good as the photos suggested… but the view! The villa was still too expensive for us, so we asked another Australian couple if they wanted to go in with us and they agreed. It was completely different from what we’d been looking for (there were no frescoes) but we knew the view would always be there.

During the renovations, we spent far more than we thought we would, which was the impetus to rent it out. We established a swimming pool on a reclaimed piece of land next to the house and opened the villa up for guests.

The villa was designed by architect Gio Ponti, an influential designer and the founder of the architectural magazine “Domus”. He was a friend of the Milanese family who commissioned the villa as a holiday home and worked on it with two of his proteges (we have the original design framed in the entranceway). He always designed buildings to maximise the natural sunlight and was inspired by transatlantic ships, which is evident in the interior of Villa Bellagio.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Villa Bellagio?

Every day the view is different, and always instagrammable. Even after seeing the photos on our website, everybody who walks in the door is bowled over by reality and immediately starts taking photos to send to their family and friends. You feel like you’re on the top of the world or floating on a cloud, with snow-capped mountains all around.

Villa Bellagio rooms & rates

You enter the property on the top floor, which features the main living space and a sweeping balcony overlooking Lake Como. There are six bedrooms set across the two floors below, with four of the bedrooms equipped with en-suite bathrooms while two of the bedrooms share a bathroom. There’s also an additional living space, kitchen and dining room on the middle floor and a sense of spaciousness throughout the villa. The lakeside offers views along its entire length while the other side of the property faces a cedar forest and garden terrace that offers a cool respite in the summer months.

Off to one side of the villa are the infinity swimming pool and the garden wellness centre, which features a spa and sauna. The bottom floor of the villa has a self-contained apartment that was built for the custodian with its own entrance. One of us will stay there to ensure everything is ready for guests each day, such as putting the cushions around the swimming pool in the morning.

Lake Como is famed for its turn-of-the-20th-century Liberty villas, with my favourite being Villa Balbianello. It’s been maintained exactly as the owner left it when he passed away — including the original furniture and crockery — so it’s quite fascinating. He was a famous mountaineer, so there are a mountain climbing museum and an antiquities museum on the property, not to mention a beautiful garden on a peninsula surrounded by water.

There are other charming villages all around Lake Como that can be visited by local ferry or on a private boat tour. If you only have a couple of days, I’d highly recommend visiting Varenna on the lake’s eastern shore.

The location of Villa Bellagio

Villa Bellagio is very private and surrounded by forest, with just a few other houses on the road that leads to the entrance. It’s a 15 minutes’ drive from the town of Bellagio and just 5 or 10 minutes on foot from the village of Civenna. Here you’ll find a supermarket, butcher, fruit shop and patisserie, as well as a pizzeria that’s open only during the summer months. A 5-8-minute drive takes you to some incredible restaurants or we can organise for lovely meals to be dropped directly at the villa by a local cook.

A bus connects Civenna with Bellagio if you don’t want to drive, although you’ll enjoy greater freedom of movement if you have a car. From Bellagio, ferries depart for towns all over Lake Como, which is far bigger than most people expect.

When is the best time to visit Lake Como?

While summer is great, I personally think spring and autumn are the best times to visit Lake Como as it’s far less crowded. It’s also visually spectacular — spring sees amazing wisteria growing around the lake and autumn has the changing colours, with the mountains usually capped by snow. You don’t have to wait to dine at restaurants and can enjoy a more private experience exploring the lake.
