The biggest downsides were leaking, pain inserting or taking out, or the worst one, causing a UTI or bladder irritation by the end :( I don’t know if I have a particularly sensitive vagina or an unusual cervix position, but I know that I always have problems no matter how careful I am and it was very depressing.
Cups never fit quite right and hurt to take in out no matter what I tried (also pushed my bladder uncomfortablely), then would leak every time even after doing every suggestion I could find. Tampons I could feel and would hurt when hitting my changing cervix, not to mention bulging out at heavy times causing pain on my urethra, and completely dried me out by the end.
Disposable pads were sweaty, stinky and no matter how ‘green’ would always cause irritation. I had finally just become dependent on cloth reusable pads, which were great for absorption and were the only thing that didn’t overly irritate...I was about to resign myself to them for life. The only things I didn’t like were the constant cleaning of them, feeling uncomfortable on hot days with a bulge in my underwear, and feeling gushing at times...I mean, I trusted them not to fail me but every woman still feels that twinge of fear that it might just keep going past the pad!
I was about to try another brand of reusable cup when I saw these. I read a lot of info on them and liked that they sat more like a diaphragm then something in your canal, so I decided to give it a go. Insertion was a BREEZE compared to anything else and after tucked behind my pubic bone I couldn’t feel a thing, it was amazing!! The real test was how long it could hold up this way.
I went to a museum with my family and we were walking everywhere for HOURS. I had a small reusable pad on just in case, this was my heaviest day and the cup was going to be put to the ultimate test. I had less cramping than normal (not sure if this was because of the cup or just my cycle) and I FORGOT I was wearing it! That never happens!! I was reminded finally after about 5-6 hours when I had to go to the bathroom. (I would have had 3 bathroom visits with a tampon in that same time!)
There was absolutely NO leaking onto my backup pad, I would have just rinsed and reinserted but being in a public stall I just emptied what I could (the whole disc was filled btw) then changed to a new one. I had packed some medical gloves and just used one for easy cleanup and insertion...that is the best idea possible trust me. It is a little messy taking out but with the glove is no problem. I went the rest of the day without incident and then went to the beach the next day same thing.
This is the first period in my life (no exaggeration) where I have felt free. Before, it just felt like something was always wrong and I was miserable just trying to prepare for the next mishap. I didn’t have to worry this period. No pain, no leaking, no irritation...I seriously have found my holy grail! If you have tried everything else with no success I strongly suggest giving these a try. I was at the end of my options and am SO glad I did as this is it!
Ps- as others have suggested you can also use your muscles to empty the cup by bearing down while on the toilet then just using a finger to push the rim up behind your pubic bone again, this was so helpful in a public restroom when I didn’t have time one time to do the full change routine! As if it couldn’t be better!
Let me start - I have a 15yo and a 4yo. I had a tubal ligation done after my last child was born. My periods have been insane since then. You know the bleeding you have after giving birth - honestly that’s how my periods have been ever since. Prior to having my last child (I was 30 when I had her), my periods had always been light and short. I was super lucky. I had my daughter and my periods have been so heavy ever since. When I say I soak through a super plus tampon in an hour or two on my heaviest days, I mean it. I was not only going through so many tampons, but I was having to wear super absorbent diapers.. I mean pads to catch what leaked because usually 4 out of 7 days that I menstruate, it’s heavy. Not just blood but clots. It’s horrible. Honestly, I consider getting an IUD not to prevent pregnancy, but possibly to lighten my periods because it’s ridiculous. Anyways, about two years ago I started seeing people recommend menstrual cups. I decided to see what the hype was about. They definitely took some trail and error - and even a trip to the urgent care to have one removed that somehow slid sideways and suctioned sideways that made it impossible for me to remove. But even after that, I still used them regularly because they did make it possible to go more than an hour or two without stressing about leaking. On my heaviest days, I was probably going about 4/5hours without having to remove the cup. I was actually happy with that. But even after over a year of using them, sometimes I still had issues with getting the placement correct. I do have a tilted cervix if that makes a difference. Anyways, several months ago I started seeing info regarding these “menstrual discs” that was of course marketed safe and mess free to use during sex. Well I’m not going to lie, that wasn’t the part that intrigued me. The part that made me interested was the fact that it was a flat disc and if it allowed a penis to enter your vagina without issues, I thought maybe I could finally stop using pads and panty liners as back up and use a light tampon instead. There were two brands at the time this brand and another. I went with this brand because it was cheaper and had two more discs included. In my mind I was thinking about how I’m usually menstruating for 7 days and these say they can work up to 12 hours - so I am thinking these would get me through my heaviest days at least, even if I’m having to remove way before 12 hours. So I ordered them and they arrived. When I first opened one, I did get a little shocked by the size. I mean I’ve had two kids but the size was intimidating. However, they’re flexible and when you squeeze it together to insert, it’s not bad at all. There is a time here and there that it may hurt just a tiny bit inserting because the length when squeezed together is quite long but once it’s in, it is so easy to position in place. You just take your finger and push the lip that’s closest to the front of your vagina until it kind of hooks behind your pelvic bone. Reading the instructions didn’t make sense until I actually inserted it and felt my pelvic bone and realized what they were talking about. But it slides right behind there and once it’s there I feel absolutely nothing. It is amazing. And let me say that even on my heaviest day, I’m probably able to keep it in for about 8-10 hours without leaking. I don’t even use a backup tampon like I originally bought these for because it’s not even needed. These have completely changed my life. I am such an active person and am always doing outdoor things, so to be able to go swimming or hiking etc and not have to stress or cancel because of my period is awesome and game changing. I have yet to have sex with one but honestly, I don’t think I would unless I just put a new one in. The only issue I have occasionally is if I have one in and I am using the bathroom and push down, once in a while it break the seal and everything inside comes pouring out. So I usually just remove it before going and insert a new one when finished. When you remove it, all you have to do is put your finger on the lip and push down like your using the bathroom and pull it forward and it comes right out. I usually pull mine out with my right hand while holding a wad of toilet paper in my left hand, dump the contents into the toilet once I have it out and then slowly place it on the toilet paper, wrap it and toss in the trash. I know this is a lot of TMI but I wanted to be honest and share my experience. I will never use a tampon again. I will never use a cup again unless I happen to run out of these and am waiting for an order to come in. And honestly I never have to wear pads as back up either. If you’re debating - just do it. You won’t regret it. I also included photos of how much liquid these discs can hold compared to a cup. It’s triple the amount. That means if your cup is only getting you through 4 hours, this should get you through 12. Again, they seriously changed my life by allowing me that bit of freedom during the week I’m on my period every month that I never could have before.

Occasionally they can be a little difficult to remove. But you just have to relax your muscles and be patient. Really the only downside is they are messy upon removal. I don’t know if I would want to deal with this in a public bathroom, however these babies have given me the luxury of being able to sleep through the night.
So simple to insert, I actually found it easy than tampons. It was comfortable as soon as it was inserted, never felt it and never leaked.
I managed to keep mine in for 7 hours with a heavy flow, and quite a bit of exercise without it leaking. I suppose they are like tampons you eventually learn the length of duration as you go. It leaked a tiny bit after the 7 hours which was obviously a sign to change, but I always wear either a pad or liner anyway:l.
Removal was a lot messier than tampons, however nothing major.
I’m definitely moving onto these from now on and going to look at a reuse-able one. 100/10!!
Remember to push it in like a record, not up like a tampon. Weird to think like that the first time but it works. 🙃 Just pushing it in like a record, back to you butt, if you understand what I mean. 😅👍
