Once you fall down the "coffee rabbit hole" and buy a good flat-burr grinder you soon realise that the grinder will need cleaning. About once a quarter (3 months) seems to be the recommended interval.
I bought a grinder and then decided to send it back due to use issues. In order to clean this I bought a package of these Urnex Grindz cleaner pellets as they were recommended by the grinder manufacturer. They are easy to use. Just add 30 - 40g into the hopper and press go. As far as I could tell they worked. The only residue was the residue normally left in the grinder. In normal useI would recommend using a sacrificial 30g or so of coffee after cleaning the grinder. This will purge any retained coffee and Urnex cleaner too.

Excellent, but do this on medium grind setting..
Not really a trick, but set your grinder to a medium or slightly courser than medium grind if you’re having trouble. When I first used this, I used it on a very fine setting. Not much coffee residue came out with the ground tablets. I ran more and more beans through afterward but I still had yellow bits and dust coming out in my beans for days after. It was frustrating and I hated the product. But I saw online to use it on a medium grind. Before putting the tablets in I purged my grinder a few times until no ground beans were coming through at all. I had also just deep cleaned it recently. Then I put a capful of Grindz in on medium setting and it pulled out so much more gunk that I wouldn’t have been able to get out otherwise! See the pic for the mixture of tablet dust and old beans that came out. Again, this was immediately after purging my grinder similar to how I do every morning before grinding some fresh beans. I then switched to fine setting and purged it a few more times and ran some coffee beans through. No complaints! And this definitely beats taking the entire grinder apart for a deep clean.

I recently tried out the Urnex Grindz Professional Coffee Grinder Cleaning Tablets, and I must say, they're a must-have for any coffee enthusiast. Cleaning coffee grinders can be a bit of a hassle, but these tablets make it incredibly easy and efficient.
The first thing I loved about Grindz is how simple they are to use. Just drop a tablet into the grinder, run it as if you're grinding coffee, and voila – it cleans out old coffee particles and oils that can affect the taste of your brew. This grinder cleaner does exactly what it is supposed to do! It cleaned the burrs of my Baratza Sette 270 in seconds (see before and after pic) with very little work on my part and no lingering aftertaste like some grinder cleaners. Just be sure to follow the pictorial instructions:
1) add a cap full of the cleaner to an empty hopper
2) run through the grinder
3) run some old beans through the grinder to push through any extra and remove any residual cleaning residue. DON’T SKIP THIS STEP!!
In addition, I recommend washing the hopper and thoroughly wiping down the outer rim of the grinder to make sure all residue of the cleaning agent is gone so it won’t affect the flavor of the coffee.
This grinder cleaner is so easy to use and would be VERY useful for someone who switches bean profiles/flavors often. The residual coffee oils in the grinder from previous beans can affect the flavor of the final product. I fresh roast my beans and use them for 8-10 days. If I switch to a different bean or roast, I’ll clean my grinder in between and run a small amount of the new bean through to prime it for future uses.
