A masterly work from a writer with “the uncanny ability to give us a cinemascopic vision of her America” (National Review), A Garden of Earthly Delights is the opening stanza in what would become one of the most powerful and engrossing story arcs in literature.

Joyce Carol Oates’s Wonderland Quartet comprises four remarkable novels that explore social class in America and the inner lives of young Americans. In
A Garden of Earthly Delights, Oates presents one of her most memorable heroines, Clara Walpole, the beautiful daughter of Kentucky-born migrant farmworkers. Desperate to rise above her haphazard existence of violence and poverty, determined not to repeat her mother’s life, Clara struggles for independence by way of her relationships with four very different men: her father, a family man turned itinerant laborer, smoldering with resentment; the mysterious Lowry, who rescues Clara as a teenager and offers her the possibility of love; Revere, a wealthy landowner who provides Clara with stability; and Swan, Clara’s son, who bears the psychological and spiritual burden of his mother’s ambition.

A Garden of Earthly Delights is the first novel in the Wonderland Quartet. The books that complete this acclaimed series, Expensive People, them, and Wonderland, are also available from the Modern Library.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for The Wonderland Quartet

“Protean and prodigious are surely the words that describe Ms. Oates. From the very beginning, as these impressive and diverse novels make clear, her talents and interests and strengths have never found comfort in fashionable restraint. She's sought, instead, to do it all—to face and brilliantly, inventively transact and give shape to as much of experience as possible, as if by no other means is a useful and persuasive gesture of moral imagination even conceivable. For us readers these are valuable books.”
—Richard Ford

“These four novels reveal Oates' powers of observation and invention, her meticulous social documentation joined to her genius for forging unforgettable myths. She is one of the handful of great American novelists of the last hundred years.”
—Edmund White

“This rich, kaleidoscopic suite of novels displays the young Joyce Carol Oates exercising her formidable artistic powers to portray a turbulent twentieth-century America. They offer the reader a singular opportunity to experience some of Oates's best writing and to witness her development, novel by novel, into one of our finest contemporary writers.”
—Greg Johnson, author of Invisible Writer: A Biography of Joyce Carol Oates

From the Inside Flap

The first book in Oates's famous trilogy that includes Expensive People and the National Book Award winner them

In her second novel, Joyce Carol Oates, author of many bestselling novels, including We Were the Mulvaneys and Blonde, created one of her most memorable heroines, Clara, the beautiful daughter of migrant farmworkers. Intent upon rising above her haphazard life of violence and poverty, Clara struggles for independence while relying on four men to fashion her destiny: her father, a hardened laborer simmering with resentment; Lowry, who rescues the teenage Clara from her family and offers her a first glimpse of love; Revere, the wealthy married man who promises Clara stability; and Swan, Clara's son, who bears the burden of his mother's mistaken identity.

For this Modern Library 20th Century Rediscovery edition, Joyce Carol Oates has revised and rewritten three fourths of the novel, originally published in 1966, a feat comparable to Henry James's revisions of his early novels in 1908, when he was at the height of his artistic powers. With a new Afterword by the author, this is the definitive edition of an early masterpiece by one of our greatest living writers.

This book combines the best of all things Oatesian. If released as a new work today, it would blast through the awards committees faster than a Philip Roth masterpiece. This reworking of Oates's second novel seamlessly integrates the fire of her yuthful writing, full of her own personal experiences, with the seasoned mastery of her later writing style. This completely rewritten book is ultimately satisfying because there is nothing to overlook due to inexperienced enthusiasm (like many of her early works). If anyone is considering an Oates novel to explore her for the first time, to bring into a summer reading program for youth, or to round out a high school curriculum, this is your book. For anyone who already loves her unique style and phenomenal skill, going back to this early novel will satisfy your cravings like nothing else in the world. This is Oates at her best. Though her murder stories (Zombie and the Rosamond Smith serial killer series) and child abuse novels (First Love, Beasts, and You Must Remember This) provide more of her famous poignant horror, Garden of Earthly Delights carries the weight of John Steinbeck's East of Eden. You can't get better than this for mastery of the classic mid 20th century novel form.

The Garden of Earthly delights begins during the depression, following a family of farm workers as they travel from field to field. We meet Carleton Walpole, the patriarch, always on the verge of violence that eventually explodes and drives the next generation, his daughter Clara, out into a different world. Clara is a survivor, using her beauty and wits to propel herself into the upper rungs of country society. With her she brings her son Swan, who is a bright, introverted boy, an outsider in this family of business, who searches for connections he is unable to make. I occasionally got bogged down mainly in Swan, who obviously has issues - Depression? Insomnia? Something? Dissociative? It’s obvious that he sufferers when his close relationship with his mother is torn apart with her marriage into the Revere family, leaving him adrift. I just couldn’t quite get Swan’s trajectory, though the end is appropriate. A good early book that in this edition has been largely rewritten as described in the afterword by the author. I definitely feel that, overall, the saga of the Walpoles is skillfully and effectively written.

In Earthly Delights Joyce Carol Oates again proves why she ranks as one of the great creators of American literary characters. Other modern authors, Elizabeth Strout for example, are nearly her equal - also masters who dig into the depths of psyche and culture to create life-like character. But none equal Oates who is incapable of creating in anything less than three dimensions.

Oates writes in the Afterword to Earthly Delights, "The more complexity we acknowledge in others, the more dignity we grant them." Carlton, Carla, Swan and even Lowry and Revere are creations of a writer who is incapable of cardboard characterization. And Oates, unlike a complex author like a Joyce for example, sculpts without losing the pull of story.

In Earthly Delights she creates yet another book as difficult to set down as it is rich in human dynamics. That’s quite an accomplishment.

Please ask yourself now, to quickly list top-of-mind, the unforgettable characters who are your literary favorites. Because I suspect over time, you too will find that among those that stay with us, Oates’ creations stick.

Depressing book as usual for Joyce Carol Oates but well written. Gloom seems to be everywhere in her books- such sad characters with so many difficulties and trials. Makes you happy to be you. I now remember why I stopped reading her books years ago. Tortured souls- abused- tormented- desperate wasted lives. Haunting? For sure.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author does a fine job of describing a family living in the 1930's, and trying to survive on farm work. The whole family worked together, but not always happily. As I was reading it, I could say to myself "this is real, this happened". A good read.

This was my first Oates novel and it won't be the last. She fleshes out her characters, and the story captivated my attention. I was sorry for the tragic ending. Oates is a terrific writer. The 4 stars is due to the too fast unravelling of Swan/ Steven and the insufficient development of the relationship between Swan and Deborah. However, I enjoyed the book and recommend others read it.

Nochmals, Vielen Dank, Amazon!!!!
