- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2021This book is exceptional. It is hands-on and very approachable. I have read many articles and books on body image and this is by far the most usable. I love the practical applications and ways it thoughtfully asks the reader to check their own biases, as well as be aware of layers of societal beliefs and often discrimination of anyone living outside of the appearance ideals. This book is an excellent way to help shake up client beliefs (as well as our own!) about the things we have been taught to believe about what it means to have a body. It’s a resource I’m excited to utilize with my clients to help bring more people to a place of peace with body image!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2023I am a therapist and this book has helped my clients so much!!! The assignments are unique and it even has a clinician section, which a lot of workbooks I have seen lack. If you’re one of those people who like to fold the other half of the book back while working on one page, this is perfect for that! It folds back but doesn’t ruin the binding.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021I highly recommend the Positive Body Image Workbook for clinicians and their patients, as well as anyone seeking to increase positive body image. It’s very accessible and comprehensive. The handouts and measures are informed by the most up-to-date research and are excellent for building insight and tracking progress. The authors effectively address the many facets of body image concerns and positivity. I have seen the benefits of using this resource in my clinical work.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021As a body image researcher and advocate, I love that the authors put all of this information in one book. There are great exercises that can be used on your own, or with patients (if you are a therapist) or with students (if you are a teacher). There's an overview of most of the critical concepts in body image work, and there are even assessment tools for measuring your own body image (or others' body image).
If you see patients who ever have body image concerns or work in settings where body image concerns are prevalent (high schools, colleges), you should buy this book! If you just want to come to understand your own body image better (and improve it!), you should buy this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021A step by step guide to repairing, improving and building positive body image. The resources can be used independently or as a whole. User friendly, simple practices and psycho-education for developing self-compassion and self-awareness helped every client who used them regain a sense of hope and new direction.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2022I am a college based counselor and was desperately seeking a resource to build a body image support group. This workbook has guided the way to some powerful healing moments amongst group members, and I cannot believe it is so affordable. It is also allowing me to grow as a clinician. I make sure to cite Barcalow, Tykla & Judge each session as they deserve the recognition. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2025Extremely disappointing. Addressed body image issues as extremely superficial and shallow shortcomings, used very vague and poorly worded prompts and questions with no or unhelpful follow-on from questions. Maybe it’s helpful for clinicians, but as a “patient,” this was possibly the worst book I have read related to EDs and body image.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic tools and resources
Whether you buy this to work through yourself, or to use with clients, this book has so many activities and resources. It is backed up by scientific research in every chapter, extremely well researched.
The book touched on so many areas crucial to body image, such as self-compassion and gentle nutrition.
All the activities are also available on request as a PDF too, which is really helpful for working online with clients.
I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone looking to improve or work with body image.
