Purchase options and add-ons
"Kick bad mental habits and toughen yourself up."—Inc.
Master your mental strength—revolutionary new strategies that work for everyone from homemakers to soldiers and teachers to CEOs.
Everyone knows that regular exercise and weight training lead to physical strength. But how do we strengthen ourselves mentally for the truly tough times? And what should we do when we face these challenges? Or as psychotherapist Amy Morin asks, what should we avoid when we encounter adversity? Through her years counseling others and her own experiences navigating personal loss, Morin realized it is often the habits we cannot break that are holding us back from true success and happiness. Indulging in self-pity, agonizing over things beyond our control, obsessing over past events, resenting the achievements of others, or expecting immediate positive results holds us back. This list of things mentally strong people don't do resonated so much with readers that when it was picked up by Forbes.com it received ten million views.
Now, for the first time, Morin expands upon the thirteen things from her viral post and shares her tried-and-true practices for increasing mental strength. Morin writes with searing honesty, incorporating anecdotes from her work as a college psychology instructor and psychotherapist as well as personal stories about how she bolstered her own mental strength when tragedy threatened to consume her.
Increasing your mental strength can change your entire attitude. It takes practice and hard work, but with Morin's specific tips, exercises, and troubleshooting advice, it is possible to not only fortify your mental muscle but also drastically improve the quality of your life.

MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2024Just like our physical health it is vital that we have good habits and strategies for good mental health. My book club read this book last month and we all agreed that the principles discussed in this book were insightful yet simple enough that we could use them every week. Many of the ideas presented seemed to be "no brainers," as in, these were ideas we have heard many times before but they were a good reminder of easy bad habits we can fall into that will sabotage your mental heath if let to fester and grow. What was interesting in my book club's discussion was the fact that the younger generation (i.e. - our teenagers and young adults) found the ideas presented in the book to be "hard to accept or understand." That led us to a discussion of how our generation and our kids' generation have grown up in different worlds and they might need to hear these ideas far more than we did. It was a good read and one I will keep on my shelf and refer my kids to in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2017Its a lovely book that mirrors the style of the book The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. And if you love The Obstacle is the Way, The Power of Habit, and The Motivation Manifesto...then you'll love Amy Morin's 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do. It contains 13 powerful lessons filled with great wisdom and astounding stories from many amazing leaders and entrepreneurs . The book teaches you how to perceive your problems and people from a different angle and from a more expansive perspective. The book also allows for empowerment on how we perceive and tackle obstacles in a more practical and creative light and allows us to question our fears. Most of us make life harder for ourselves through false perceptions and limited beliefs based on irrational fears and veils of illusions. The book truly does empower a person to really look past beyond our internal conflicts to pursue our dreams and happiness from a different approach. I've reread this book many times as much as Marcus Aurelius Meditations. The book teaches that through change of mentality, change of perception, through perseverance, patience, embrace failures as if they were accolades of achievement, and strong determination we can carry out an amazing successful life. We live in a world where everything is measured and dogmatism and ego is highly valued over true happiness and humility. Our wealth, our appearances, our job performance, our skills, our wallets, our possessions, our lives....everything is a competition within our society and as so it goes...people rush into life to achieve the perfect spouse, the pressure to thrive through unethical purposes in the work environments, and others live life aimlessly pursuing mediocre activities like gossip and trivial matters and in the end you feel lost, miserable, but unhappy. This book teaches a person to embrace their mistakes, to never give your anger away to senseless people or matters, and how other powerful and influential figures have bounced back from setbacks and afflictions in life. The author herself shares an amazing story regarding her own struggles in life. Its a book that I never get tired of rereading and you'd have to read it to understand why.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2022I liked this book because it outlined all of its point with clear and precise examples and plenty of them I related to and could see how my behavior was affecting my mental strength and resilience. Anyone who likes self help and improving upon themselves is a good candidate for this book. Honestly it’s life skills so I think everyone should- but it may not be your cup of tea. It’s kinda dry but very educational. I have it a four out of five because I still really enjoyed all the topics discussed and I believe it helped me in the long run!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019I read a lot of books but write very few reviews. This book is exceptional so I will take a few moments to comment.. Simple, easy to follow anti anxiety advice based on sound reasoning. No psychobabble Chapter 4, Don't dwell on things you cant control, and Chapter 6, Don't fear taking calculated risks were the chapters that I personally connected with. As I age into my sixties, I found myself being more anxious about everything, my health, bad drivers, flying, weather disasters, developing a near prepper mindset about a coming doomsday, etc. Stuff I never ever worried about before. (I had a long career in law enforcement.) I have no explanation or understanding of why I was suddenly becoming a worrywart, and was beginning to wonder if I should talk to a Dr about a medication. Instead I read Amy's book and it reminded me why I never worried about stuff I have no control over, and helped me to refocus. I feel less anxious. My tough guy shell is cracking some because I am also taking her advice about trying a few minutes meditation every morning, and starting a journal. Not sure what it will do for me, but I have great respect for this author (she has had her share of life challenges) so am going to follow her advice and see where it leads. I think this book has solid guidance for everyone and is well worth your time to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2024I love this book the scenarios used I’m sure majority people can relate to and could use this free therapy advice.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2020I love the idea of mental strength, and all 13 topics of this book are important. However, the book didn't add much depth or insight into each of the topics. Each chapter has an example person who addressed challenges with the area. Most of the examples were shallow, and often centered around someone who dealt with some disease, and then spent the rest of their life raising money for said disease. The examples also seemed forced into each topic, and did not always relate to it directly. This book is fine for someone who is entirely new to the concept of mental strength and needs and nudge to improve their attitude. I'd like the level of depth to an "eating healthy 101" guide. Even if the stuff is obvious. reading again is never a bad reminder. But there are more thought provoking or inspirational books on the topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read helping to make sense of life
This was a great read that came to me during a time in my life when I was looking for answers and trying to make sense of everything going on around me whilst feeling sorry for myself. The practical examples and conclusions drawn by the author will make you realize that bad things can happen but our attitude towards how we handle them ultimately determines our happiness and the quality of our lives. The book also makes you question yourself and your behaviors instead of assigning blame to others and circumstances which really helped me to attain a sense of peace.
