Handy when combined with a quart Ball or Mason jar (not a wide mouth)
I purchased the OXO over other more expensive and larger type spiralizers because I wanted to "try" making zoodles (zucchini noodles) and did not want to spend a lot of money. I have a boneyard of unused special kitchen gadgets already. I used a quart canning jar (not the wide mouth size) to catch the noodles, and it was an excellent fit. This spiralizer requires the user to twist either the squash or in my case I found it easier to twist the canning jar. It is not difficult but probably takes a bit more time than a crank or electric model. It took me less than 5 minutes to spiralize two medium size zucchini. I would not recommend this tool for the larger end of season zucchinis. I think for a single person or a couple that does not eat zoodles every day, it is a perfect cost effective and space saving tool.

I was inspired to get a spiralizer, and specifically this spiralizer, by Martha Rose Shulman's book "Spiralize this!". Inspired by that book, I got this spiralizer and also a Mueller Pro 4-blade crank spiralizer. With the Mueller, you turn a crank handle. With the Oxo you hold the veg in you hands and twist and push it into the spiralizer. The Oxo works like a Veg-ghetti (if you've ever tried one of those), but it does a better job, is easier to use, and is MUCH easier to clean.

Compared to a crank spiralizer, the Oxo is a bit slow and tiring, but it works great for some vegs (especially softer vegs of odd shapes or sizes) where a crank spiralizer like the Mueller just won't work. So if you're into spiralizing things, it is good to have both types of spiralizer in your kitchen tool-kit.

For an entry-level spiralizer (with the Mueller being the next step up), I give it high marks. It is inexpensive, compact, sturdy, and it is quick and easy to clean. And if you ever get a crank spiralizer, you will still want to keep it. It will still be the best tool for the job in some cases.

This is my first spiralizer, and so far I've just spiralized some zucchini and chayote. If the veggies are the right shape and texture, works great!

Pros: small, inexpensive, fairly easy to use and clean.

Cons: takes a little bit of hand effort (shouldn't be a problem for most people), especially carrots (which are pretty hard to make work) but my biggest complaint is that veggies need to be just the right size to work... Really skinny zucchinis don't work, as they need to be big enough to spin in a circle around the cutting surface. Too big and it won't fit - but at least you can cut it into long chunks to fit and it will still work. But veggies that are too small just won't work at all.

I knew I wanted a spiralizer, but wasn't sure how often I would use it. We have narrow kitchen with very little counter space so I was worried that the countertop ones would be stored in cabinets and promptly forgotten. Because I've had good luck with other OXO products, I decided to go ahead and spend a little more on this handheld spiralizer than the other options. I do not regret that decision.

Even with hand issues, I can use this (If I were frequently spiralizing more than one veggie at a time, I'd maybe consider the countertop version instead). I like that this has the three blades as it seems like different veggies do work a bit better when using the larger blade and others work better with the smaller blade, the ribbon option is just a bonus. Don't bother using the top gripping piece until your veggie is down low enough that it no longer feels safe to twist without it, it works much better that way. It also works best if cut the veggie pieces is a nice straight flat line. I tried to spiralize some bent pieces -- it kind of worked, but the noodles were breaking too easily.

It's relatively easy to clean but I would recommend using a bottle brush, especially one that has a smaller attachment (the kind usually designed for cleaning nipples on baby bottles) as it's hard to get a regular brush in some of the little nooks and crannies.

I first discovered spiralizers when I was browsing the internet searching for some new recipes for a crop of zucchini and cucumbers from the garden last summer. I first got the OXO 1-blade Handheld spiralizer at BB&B. I don't have much storage space, so I didn't want a tabletop model. It was a great little spiralizer that was inexpensive and very compact. At that point I decided to order the 3-blade version through Amazon. I gave away the 1-blade version. The 3-blade version is also quite compact. These gadgets work well for small veggies. If you don't have much storage space, and don't spiralize often, these are a great choice, IMO. They seem to be quite well made for the price. The pieces snap together very easily, and they clean up very easily. I would recommend rinsing off the blades immediately after use. I put them in the dishwasher on the top rack, and they come through beautifully. After receiving the 3-blade spiralizer, I ended up buying the OXO tabletop Spiralizer. I decided I would really like to rice cauliflower from the garden this fall. I guess I should have just bought the tabletop spiralizer in the beginning! :) I have spiralized zucchini, carrots, onions, butternut squash, apples, & jicama using either the handheld spiralizer or the tabletop model.

I’m usually cooking just for me, and for a single zucchini or other small, soft, cylindrical vegetable, this works fine. In fact, better than hauling out my KitchenAid attachment. It’s not so great for larger quantities (fatigue) or for hard vegetables like carrots.

I’m a big fan of Oxo products, but this one missed the mark overall. Three stars because it does work in a limited way, is easy to store, and is quick to clean by hand or in the dishwasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Völlig ausreichend und sehr gute Qualität.
Reviewed in Germany on August 25, 2017
