An introduction to Onar Andros

How would you describe Onar Andros in a nutshell?

The word Onar translated from Greek means ‘dream’, which is a very accurate expression of what Onar Andros means to me. It is my dream come true, my way of enjoying life in such a beautiful country as Greece.

Onar is built as a meeting point between our guests and nature. We want to protect the natural landscape while creating a settlement of a few vacation homes in complete harmony with its environment.

What was your inspiration to create such a vacation destination?

I was born in London yet grew up in Greece. Every summer my family would go to Andros Island for vacation as we have a beautiful old family house there. Unfortunately as a teenager I was unable to appreciate the beauty of the place and found it rather boring.

However, when I was older I came back here with friends and immediately fell in love with the island. The place had an amazing beach with huge fields, waterfalls, small streaming ponds – it was just something exceptional.

When I decided to move back to Greece I knew that I had to find my own special piece of land on which to build a farm. I wanted to use natural materials to build with and only create few structures on the land. When I started looking for the right place to make my dream come true I remembered Andros at just the right time for me to go back there again.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Onar Andros?

What we try to offer is a mixture of childhood memories of how good life used to be, providing a safe, pure atmosphere like it was in Greece in the 70s & 80s.

This is why such a remote place in the Cyclades was chosen. Onar is about nature in the middle of nowhere. If you want to go out at night and enjoy the bar scene, you might want to choose another destination. Here everything is really relaxed.

What is so special about staying at Onar?

Number one is the amazing location on Andros. It’s one of the completely unspoiled regions of the Cycladic Islands, and in fact of Greece. The land is the same as it was 200 years ago because it’s a protected national park for the wetlands, rare animals and plants that live there.

I try to make my guests feel as if they are my friends staying at my home. It’s very personal and comfortable like a friend’s house.

It’s a small retreat with only a few people there at one time. Visitors are from all around the world and often keep in touch with the people they met here. Many people come back again the next year together with the friends they made here.

What are your recommendations for your guests?

If you are in an adventurous mood, you can rent a Jeep and explore the island. It’s the second biggest island in the Cycladic complex with the longest coastline. This means that there are numerous beautiful beaches. Most of theses remote beaches are accessible by dirt road or by boat.

By car you will also be able to visit the small villages on Andros, the museums, experience the fiestas that happen during different times of the year with traditional music and really nice food. You can also go scuba diving, wind surfing, trekking, and many other things.

It’s a great location for bird watchers because there are many protected areas on the island where you can see rare birds.

We can always organise treks, boating, hiking, and activities like that. Massages are offered upon request.

Looking back since you started, what has been the biggest reward?

If you believe in your dream, decide to follow it and then see it come to fruition, and the people that are sharing that dream with you are also enjoying their stay, that is the utmost satisfaction and the biggest reward.

Plus, six months out of every year I live the life of a tycoon with my own private paradise. What else could I possibly ask for?

Onar Andros rooms & rates

There are 14 vacation homes of different sizes. The materials and design are basically the same, but some have space for three people and others for five people. The bigger houses have two bedrooms, two bathrooms on the first floor and a big living room and kitchenette on the other floor.

The first two houses I built had no electricity at all as it started of as a private place for my friends, and me. But as more people started to come visit, I built two more houses and added electricity. Step by step, over the last 10 years, I have been adding things every year to improve each house. This definitely is a lifetime project.

The rentals homes are simple yet include all the necessary facilities. However, we adopt a less-is-more concept. Time at Onar is all about nature and the concept of communicating and exchanging experiences with people from all over the world. Guests are offered homemade food with fresh ingredients from the island and well picked organic products from our farm. Every morning our cook will ask if there are any special requests or allergies to be aware of. We offer breakfast and then organise lunch, often something like a barbecue on the beach or an excursion down the river where they can stop to eat at local farms and taste local wines.

A common pool and pool bar is available to all guests staying at Onar during operating hours only. Due to limited capacity and to avoid overcrowding, a reservation in advance is required. To book your seat, kindly contact the on-site manager.

Things to do in Cyclades & Andros

  • Massages / Treatments
  • Yoga classes
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Scuba diving
  • Boat trips
  • Fishing

Depending on the weather, you can rent small boats without a license and explore the island with the longest coastline in the Cyclades. It’s truly an amazing experience. You can access beautiful empty beaches, Andros Town, as well as many other nice places.

I would also recommend fishing with local fishermen, and trekking in the area. Ahla river starts from the top of the mountain and at the end of it you can find hidden swimming ponds, waterfalls, and small lakes. It’s not a very easy hike, but truly amazing.

All the beaches are public in Greece, but ours is harder to access so usually it’s not too crowded, except during high season. To make the most out of your experience you can always start your day off on the beach and then see where it takes you.

So, most of our guests come here to relax, go to the beach, to read. Some of them want to spend a few days at the beach and then explore the island. The cosmopolitan Andros Town with the neoclassical mansions and the Museum of Modern Art, Vori beach with the impressive ship wreckage, the Byzantine monasteries of Agios Nikolaos and Panahrantou, the arched bridges and the traditional watermills at Dipotamata, the captivating beaches of Andros and its traditional villages, are only some of the places worth visiting.

There’s a lot of history here as it used to be a very rich, shipping island in the past. A lot of Greek ship owners still come from Andros.

The location of Onar Andros

Andros is the northernmost island of the Cyclades Islands. Four rivers traverse it and it is one of the few islands where the Cycladic landscape is combined with lush greenery. It is only two hours from Athens yet to reach Onar you have to come by boat, as there is no airport nearby. It is easily accessible though as a driver is available to pick up our guests from the port when they arrive.

The closest village is approximately eight kilometres away, it takes about 45 mins to reach Andros town and 50 mins to get to the port. Besides that our location is completely isolated, which is the reason why most of our guests choose to stay with us. It is a perfect getaway.

When is the best time to visit Cyclades?

It is beautiful all year around, yet it truly depends on what you are looking for. It can get really hot in the summer, but the north winds might cool everything down.

If you enjoy the heat, July and August is a good time to visit. You can take your swim in the morning and then come back to the house and relax inside during the heat of the day.

Generally, I would recommend not visiting during high season but during off-season. We are open from May through October. We also host seminars and retreats from all over the world during the low season if it’s requested by a group of people.
