An introduction to Hidden Hill

How would you describe Hidden Hill in a nutshell?

Hidden Hill is a place where you can feel the freedom of movement and connect with nature, away from everything else.

What is the story behind Hidden Hill Naxos, what was your inspiration to create it?

My family has been travelling to Naxos for our holidays since 2010. Being Greeks, we have visited most of the islands and Naxos was the first place where we were really happy with the location — it’s perfect. So we started looking for a piece of land where we could create a big house and return each year.

After some time, we found this location, which is really hidden and cannot be seen from the surrounding area. It was while I was driving along the main route that the name came to me: “Hidden Hill”. We chose this place because it gives you the chance to be alone and enjoy a lot of privacy while being just two minutes drive from restaurants and beaches where you can connect with other people.

How would you describe the atmosphere, architecture and interior design of Hidden Hill Naxos?

I am an engineer and into design and art, so I had some guidelines for our architects. I wanted to create something minimal and simple that followed the angles and height of the landscape and blended into the surrounding environment.

But I also wanted something extraordinary that made the house different from the rest on the island and the architects designed a really nice pergola to meet this brief. No matter where you are on the estate, you feel like you are surrounded by the environment — the hills, the sky, the sea — and not by a building.

To you personally, what is so special about Hidden Hill Naxos?

When I’m there, I feel completely disconnected from the rest of the world. My mind is not consumed with other things — it’s just you, the land and the sea. In the mornings, I wake up to the sounds of the farm animals and I feel totally relaxed. It gives me a chance to reset my batteries and feel full of energy to visit the beaches and villages.

Often, our guests don’t want to go anywhere else. We had an English family who stayed at Hidden Hill for a week before travelling on to Santorini. They rang me the next day asking if they could return and it was the biggest compliment.

Hidden Hill rooms & rates

Both of the villas are identical in terms of their living spaces, kitchens and verandahs and can be rented separately or as an entire estate. Because of the high stone walls, there is complete privacy and you can’t see one villa from the other.

Both villas feature eight-metre glass sliding doors that face east and west, as well as a small utility room in the living space. While Villa South has a swimming pool, Villa North is surrounded by gardens. They are separated by the main staircase that leads down to an outdoor fire pit. This is more of a place to socialize as fires are prohibited by law in the summer months. There is also a common area with a calisthenics gym and we are currently building a yoga shala.

Things to do in Cyclades & Naxos

  • Art / Culture
  • Massages / Treatments
  • Yoga classes
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Boat trips

I would recommend visiting the traditional mountain villages nearby and going to the ancient Temple of Demeter, as well as spending a day in Naxos Town. You can also hike to the top of Mount Zeus, which is particularly stunning at sunrise and offers panoramic views of the surrounding islands.

Nearby are several clubs offering kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons, with the conditions particularly good in July and August. Hiring a private boat to visit the small islands surrounding Naxos is also a “must”.

The location of Hidden Hill

We are located in the southwest part of the island in an area known as Kastraki, which is around 15 kilometres from the town of Naxos and the airport. It is away from the main tourist area and here, the beaches are publicly accessible, so you can choose wherever you want to go.

Kastraki Beach is just 1.5 kilometres from the property but we love going to Alyko, which is around five minutes drive from Hidden Hill. The beaches here are wild, undeveloped and never crowded. If you prefer restaurants, rental umbrellas and sun loungers, there are lots of beaches further north that offer that.

Nearby are three nice tavernas, the closest of which is just 700 metres away, and there are a couple of supermarkets within two minutes drive. In around five minutes, you can be in Vivlos where you’ll find a pharmacy and bakery, so you don’t have to drive to Naxos Town.

When is the best time to visit Cyclades?

August is very busy in the Cyclades, so I personally would avoid visiting during this time. Having said that, if you are staying at Hidden Hill and not going into the main town or one of its nearby beaches, then you won’t notice the crowds. In July and August, we get high winds, making this ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

May, June, September and October are all fantastic months and the weather is just perfect. We are closed between November and April each year.
