Purchase options and add-ons
“In her long and extraordinary career, Cicely Tyson has not only succeeded as an actor, she has shaped the course of history.” –President Barack Obama, 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony
“Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. In these pages, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and a mother, a sister and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams. I am a woman who has hurt as immeasurably as I have loved, a child of God divinely guided by his hand. And here in my ninth decade, I am a woman who, at long last, has something meaningful to say.” –Cicely Tyson

Review
“The autobiography of Miss Cicely Tyson is a balm for the afflicted.” — New York Times
“A parting gift to readers and chronicles an incredible life, lived fully.” — USA Today
“This grand tale of her immense talent and desire to live out loud will resonate with anyone who has a dream.” — O, the Oprah Magazine
"It’s in these poignant moments that the memoir becomes a resonant meditation on the link between an actress’s life and her art. This showstopping tale hits the mark." — Publishers Weekly
“What shines most from the memoir is how Tyson’s story, while frankly written and supremely eye-opening, isn’t just her own. It’s also the story of Black women in America, of generations past, present and yet to come, whose wills to survive are divinely gifted and ancestrally guided.” — Washington Post
"Tyson speaks with incisive clarity, humor, and moral authority…” — Booklist
“If you’re ready for your next book, “Just As I Am” is the one to pick.” — Washington Informer
“This book is Ms. Tyson’s abundant treasure to each of us: her life, in her words, just as she is. She shares truths usually whispered between close friends in the dim light of a back bedroom, those candid declarations not often spoken aloud. And she tells her story the way only a black woman can: in all of its dazzling authenticity, heels off and voice undulating, shifting between anguish and exuberance. The art of acting is the art of exposing, an emotional unveiling before others. Ms. Tyson is as revelatory on these pages as she has been on the stage." — — Viola Davis, Academy, Tony, and Emmy award-winning actress and producer

About the authors
“In her long and extraordinary career, Cicely Tyson has not only exceeded as an actor, she has shaped the course of history.”
–President Barack Obama, 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony
“The art of acting is the art of exposing, an emotional unveiling before others. Ms. Tyson is as revelatory on these pages as she has been on the stage.”
-Viola Davis, from the Foreword to Just As I Am
At 96, Cicely Tyson is a dynamic and legendary actor, lecturer, activist and one of the most respected talents in American theater and film history. A Harlem native and daughter of immigrants who rose out of poverty and onto the global stage, she began her career as a fashion model, gracing the covers of Ebony and Jet, before transitioning to acting in 1955. Since then Tyson has built an extraordinary career in coveted roles depicting strong Black women outside of caricature or stereotype, and blazed a trail of firsts for them on the big screen and on TV. Now the Oscar, Tony, and three-time Emmy Award-winning actor travels from film and stage to page to bring the world an unprecedented peek into her closely guarded personal life and the grounding forces of family and faith that guide her still.
In JUST AS I AM: A Memoir (HarperCollins; January 26, 2021; $28.99) Tyson tells her stunning story looking back at her life on and off screen. Written with #1 New York Times bestselling collaborator and Oprah Magazine founding editor, Michelle Burford, this extraordinarily compelling memoir is Tyson’s personal testimony about the nine-plus decades of experiences—some magnificent, others sorrowful, some on screen, many away from the public eye—that have given birth to the woman she is still becoming.
“Just As I Am is my truth,” writes Tyson. “It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. In these pages, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage for [more than] six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams. I am a woman who has hurt as immeasurably as I have loved, a child of God divinely guided by His hand. And here in my ninth decade, I am a woman who, at long last, has something meaningful to say.”
Cicely Tyson has been nominated for 40 television and film awards and has won 42, most notably an Oscar, a Tony Award, 3 Emmys, 8 NAACP Image Awards, the African American Film Critics Special Achievement Award, the BAFTA Film Award, the Black Film Critics Circle Award, 4 Black Reel Awards, the Elle Women in Hollywood Award, 3 Lifetime Achievement Awards, and many more. Ms. Tyson is the recipient of the NAACP’s highest honor, the prestigious Spingarn Medal. She was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2015 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2016. Most recently she was featured on the cover of Elle Magazine’s November 2017 issue, which went on to become one of their most popular and highest grossing issues. She was also on Time’s February 2019 issue. When interviewed for that issue she vowed she will never retire. In November 2019, Ms. Tyson was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. This cultural icon continues to develop her art as she takes on new roles and opportunities in her efforts to enlighten the human race.

I expected nothing less from this beautiful woman, thank you Ms Tyson.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2025This is a book ALL should read. It is sooo much more than a recounting of Cicely Tyson’s life but a reminder of Black history and the love of God to those who choose to accept the call. To today’s generations our purpose in life is deeper than yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2025Ms. Cicely Tyson is a giant among giants, and this auto-biography is another example of that. It gives unique insight into her thoughts and emotions during life events that most of us could only observe from a public vantage point while coincidentally providing a microcosm of historic black pain and excellence during her lifetime. There was nothing I disliked about the book, and I recommend it to everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2021What a treasure for us Ms. Cicely Tyson has been. This book, her sharing her stories with the world, is a tremendous gift. This is a wonderful book for its many stories of industry, family and personalities that shaped the thoughts and actions of Cicely Tyson. Once she embraced who she was and the importance of representing to all the power, grace and dignity of her being, she was always intentional from that point on, about the roles she would accept. She was once offered the role of Christie Love, an offer she found insulting, and it was surprising to think that somehow she wouldn’t mind. For those who are old enough to remember, Get Christie Love, we can relate. And one of the great things about the book, is you will feel the same bit of odd confusion, because what had been shared about her life and career up to that point, leads you to ask, huh?
“ABC had adapted the story for the small screen in a series to be called Get Christie Love!, featuring a Black female lead. ABC had me in mind to play Christie, Haber explained. The more I read, the lower my heart sank. He must be crazy if he thinks I’m taking part in this foolishness, I thought. Surely there had to be a mistake…….. It’s interesting that when the network heads adapted t he novel to the screen, they reimagined it with a Black woman as basically a prostitute—a narrative in line with the ma ny featured in the Blaxploitation films of that era, not to mention a reinforcement of the very stereotype I’d been attempting, with my choice of roles, to counter. That wasn’t the surprise. The real stunner was that they thought that I—on the heels of having earned every accolade imaginable for portraying the dignified Jane Pittman—would even consider such a role. Between that and the ignorance I’d witnessed while traveling this country to address outright bigotry against Black people, no way was I about to strip down to play a hooker with a badge.”
It’s a joyous look at a wonderful life lead with purpose and conviction, no great scandalous stories, and even the well-worn stories of abuse from Miles Davis are down played significantly. Miles’ own book has a different story to tell, but Ms. Tyson states she never read the book, “I didn’t need to read a book to know what was true. I lived it. And no written account could fully capture what I know happened between the two of us.”
Simply, just an all-around great read and her “writing collaborator” Michelle Burford is undoubtedly responsible for the literary flourishes that makes this book sing and soar and Tyson is effusive in her acknowledgment of the talent and “the poetry of the pen” that brings this work to the epitome of excellence.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025This book Is a great read worth the money!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021This was a moving biography on one of my most admired actresses, Cicely Tyson. Her book was published in January 26, 2021 and she transitioned on January 28, 2021.
She was elegant, worldly, courteous, courageous, firm in her beliefs and mystically enhanced with the gift of premonition. At age 54 she became a staunch plant based foodie and did 15 pull-ups and walks throughout her life for exercise. So admirable for the petite bombshell.
The walk through her life and loves both spiritual and emotional brought in strong focus the real truth about the many people she interacted with relaying her integrity, honesty and abundance of character. There were so many rumors about what Miles Davis (another of my musical favorites) did to her but it was nothing like the rumors and much more satisfying to hear the truth even though that relationship brought her such sorrow due to his obsession with woman, infidelity drugs and his childhood demons bringing her desire for a loving monogamous interactions. Being married and having to protect yourself from your spouse is abominable. I did not and would not read Miles Davis’s book.
She had an impressive repertoire of movies, plays and television appearances all imbibing strong black females with generations of wisdom. The way she immersed herself in characters is the reason all her performances garnered praise. The number of times she faced “me too” moment is frightening and unfortunate. It was comforting to read her report that she was treated with respect by Bill Cosby.
Her relationships with her mother and daughter may not have been perfect but she did good by both of them. Her only daughter really lucky because he mother was devoted to her having all the joy she provide.
I wish the world would have had her longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Memoir
Cicely Tyson gives us all the rich details of her nearly century long life. A life full of adventure, heartbreak, resilience and triumph. From the moment I started reading it to the very last pages, I was mesmerized and found it hard to put the book down. A real page turner that is all the more special for the fact that it's all true. Thank you Miss Tyson for sharing your world with us.
