Product Description

The Kingston IronKey™ Keypad 200 series are OS-independent hardware-encrypted USB Type-A and USB Type-C® drives with an alphanumeric keypad for easy-to-use PIN access. The KP200 incorporates XTS-AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption. It also is FIPS 140-3 Level 3 (Pending) certified for military-grade security with enhancements that further elevate the bar for data protection. Its circuitry is covered by a layer of special epoxy that makes it virtually impossible to remove components without damaging them; this tough epoxy stops attacks against the semiconductor components. The drive is designed to be tamper-evident to alert owners. It also incorporates Brute Force password attack protection, and BadUSB protection with digitally signed firmware. The alphanumeric keypad is coated with a layer of polymer that protects the keys and hides key usage through analysis of fingerprints on the keys.

KP200 now meets the new FIPS 140-3 Level 3 military-grade security specifications published by NIST. This is an enhanced version of the FIPS 140-2 specifications that further enhances the drive’s security capabilities and tamper-resistance. It includes XTS-AES 256-bit encryption along with Brute Force and BadUSB attack protection with digitally signed firmware. Its circuitry is covered by a layer of special epoxy that makes it virtually impossible to remove components without damaging them; this tough epoxy stops attacks against the semiconductor components.

OS and Device Independent

With KP200 utilizing a rechargeable battery, the keypad can be used to unlock the drive without using any software, and then plug it into any system that supports a USB Type-A or USB Type-C mass storage device. This gives users the most flexibility across different platform types and operating systems.

Multi-PIN Option

Multi-PIN Option

Users have the option to set up a User or an Admin/User mode. Admin can be used to restore a User PIN and provide access to the drive should User PIN be forgotten or if the drive is locked after reaching the maximum of 10 User login attempts.

Global and Session Read-Only (Write Protect) Modes

Both Admin and User can set a session-based Read-Only mode to protect the drive from malware on untrusted systems. Admin can also set a Global Read-Only mode that sets the drive in Read-Only mode until reset.

Great device; anyone can erase it so keep data backed up
I am a huge fan of full disk encryption on everything, no matter what it is, as our data is valuable in this age. Removable drives I have struggled with this for years, as it is difficult to find a solution that works across multiple device types (Windows/Mac/Linux) as most are software based and only one well on 1 or 2 of the set. I have mainly used Bitlocker encryption and that works well as long as it is Windows machines. Also various other products are advertised as encryption devices, but they rely on installing software on the machine, which is still typically limited to only Windows/Mac and also needs the ability to install software on the machine. This device has a lot of positives going for it: it is encrypted and uses NO SOFTWARE on the machine to accomplish this. Instead the device itself will unlock/lock with the built-in keypad and the state determined how the USB device presents itself to the host. When locked, the USB device does not do anything but use USB power to recharge it's internal battery. This means that the computer doesn't even recognize or see a USB device plugged in at all. There is a lot to this device, and I recommend reading through the user manual to really get all the features, but in a nutshell it supports: a user PIN, an admin PIN, an auto-lock timeout, a read-only mode, and brute force detection. I want to mention the two that stand out, at least to me: the read-only mode and the brute force detection. The read-only mode is really great, as it (from the device) will put it in to a read-only mode in order to mount the volume but not allow writes. This is great for when you need to access the data, but want to make sure nothing is modified on the drive. The other is brute force detection which, when a wrong PIN is entered 10 times, it will basically reset the device, loosing all your data in the process. This cannot be disabled and something you should be very well aware of!You really need to have a backup of anything on the device because anyone can thus erase the device with physical access to it.

I’ve purchased two of these Kingston IronKey keypad 200 drives, one with USB-A in 64 GB and one with USB-C in 128 GB and they really are phenomenal to use, plenty intuitive, and very secure in my experience. I also bought the Apricorn on 8 GB to test it out and it’s essentially a clone of this Kingston drive however, I can say I prefer the Kingston IronKey to the Apricorn due to build quality, although they are very close in comparison, and the more updated protection the Kingston model has over the particular Apricorn I purchased. That may not still be the case so compare specs.
I read several reviews on this IronKey and, unfortunately, nearly all of the complaints I read were from users who are having a hard time comprehending and using the technology and need a bit of hand holding through the setup and use process. It’s pretty obvious that many of them are memorizing the steps in the instructions to lock/unlock/read/write with this drive instead of understanding how it functions and the meaning behind the feedback it provides through its blinking or steady combinations of blue, red, and green lights. I’m not sure most of those users understand the difference in the drive being locked and charging, unlocked in read/write, unlocked in read only, unlocked in admin, or locked and in setup mode.
Personally, I find this drive very easy to use and understand the mode it’s in. The instructions were simple and straightforward. I only wish the Kingston IronKey was made in the U.S. or basically anywhere other than China.

I originally purchased the 16 GB Ironkey Keypad 2000 about five years ago, and have been using it almost daily ever since without any issues whatsoever. I just recently purchased another 16 GB Ironkey Keypad 200 (identical to the older 2000 version) for my wife to use during her extensive European travels and she absolutely loves it.

Yes . . . it is expensive, however, in this case you are definitely getting what you pay for. Rock solid security, and excellent design and build quality. I highly recommend it!

Once programmed, it is easy to use. The limited instructions provided were unclear. Had to find and rely on online videos. Providing links to those videos with the product would be a benefit. A warning not to attempt programming without knowing full and correct sequence to program attached to the drive in the package could be useful.

I purchased this as a gift for someone that is not computer savy, but has a nosey roommate. At first I thought that I messed up the unlock code input, but on the 5th try it worked. then it didn't work 3 times, then worked, then worked the next time... But even when I reset the time out option, it still times out in less than a minute, too quickly to save files or to even look for a file to open. Then it takes multiple attempts to unlock again.
My friend kept it, but I doubt that it will ever get used.
This was as useful as a 64kg dinner fork.
