Hana Vu's distinctive brand of indie rock sets her deep, dispirited vocals in a mix of dreamy haze, jangle, anxious alt-rock, and melancholic post-punk. Emerging on music-sharing sites in 2014, she released a series of increasingly more fully arranged collections leading up to her label debut, the How Many Times Have You Driven By EP, in 2018. She made her full-length debut with 2021's Public Storage, her first recording with a co-producer. They reteamed for the sequel, 2024's Romanticism, an album that cataloged her thoughts as she entered her twenties.

Based in Los Angeles, Vu started writing songs as a preteen and began uploading home recordings to the web in her early teens. Her first collection, Got Got Demos, appeared in 2014. The following year's Outtakes featured hazy, moody arrangements of various combinations of guitar, keyboards, drum machine, and multi-tracked vocals, though by August 2015's Nightlife she was recording full-band arrangements with live drums. Her 2016 album, Sensitive, included the song "Queen of High School," a collaboration with Willow Smith.

However, it was her video for a later track, "Crying on the Subway," that caught the attention of Fat Possum imprint Luminelle Recordings' co-founder Chris Cantalini in early 2018. Vu opened a show in L.A. at the invitation of headliner Soccer Mommy that April, and she made her label debut in June 2018 with the EP How Many Times Have You Driven By. It was accompanied by a U.S. tour in support of indie pop duo Sales.

Following the release of her debut EP, Vu graduated from high school, moved out of her childhood home, and passed on a college acceptance offer in order to devote her time to music. She toured with Phantogram and Nilufer Yanya before following up with the self-produced double-EP Nicole Kidman/Anne Hathaway in October 2019.

Working with a co-producer for first time, Vu recorded her full-length debut with Day Wave's Jackson Phillips, who also mixed and played on the album. The resulting Public Storage arrived on Ghostly International in November 2021. Four months later, the Parking Lot EP packaged two new singles ("Parking Lot" and "Mr. Lonely") with live versions of selections from Public Storage.

Vu returned to the studio with Phillips to record her sophomore LP, which found them continuing to bolster her sound with influences like 2000s indie rock, gloomy post-punk, and lush, self-examining synth and guitar balladry. Led by singles "Care" and the age-referencing "22," Romanticism appeared on Ghostly in April of 2024. ~ Marcy Donelson
