Artist bios

Rrose produces experimental techno and drone compositions which explore psychoacoustic phenomenon. Named in reference to Marcel Duchamp's persona Rrose Sélavy, the project first appeared anonymously in 2011, releasing music through the influential techno collective/label Sandwell District and making an impact with tracks such as "Waterfall." The project was gradually revealed as a female alter ego of longtime techno artist Seth Horvitz, intended as a political statement and an exploration of identity. While continuing to hone a singular style of hypnotic, psychedelic techno, Rrose also performs contemporary classical works, including a 2015 recording of James Tenney's Having Never Written a Note for Percussion and a collaboration with Charlemagne Palestine issued in 2019, titled The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn. The project's official debut album, Hymn to Moisture, appeared in 2019, followed by Please Touch in 2023.

Seth Horvitz was previously well known for making glitchy techno and IDM as Sutekh. Between 1997 and 2010, he released four albums, a remix compilation, and numerous EPs for labels like Force Inc., Drop Beat, Plug Research, and Soul Jazz, including records with artists such as Twerk, Safety Scissors, and Kit Clayton. He eventually became more interested in sound art and modern composition than techno and studied electronic music at Mills College in Oakland. As part of the international techno collective Sandwell District, Rrose (at the time an anonymous project) released Motormouth Variations, a collaboration with Mills professor Bob Ostertag, in 2011. The album's release was surrounded by two EPs, Primary Evidence and Merchant of Salt, the second of which included Rrose's breakthrough club track, the mesmerizing "Waterfall." Third EP Artificial Light (1969-1909) appeared in 2012, and after Sandwell District became defunct, Rrose mainly began releasing music through the Eaux imprint, starting with another Ostertag collaboration, The Surgeon General. Numerous EPs followed, including 2013's Monad XVI, the artist's first release for Stroboscopic Artefacts.

Having Never Written a Note for Percussion, consisting of studio and live performances of James Tenney's drone piece, was released by Further Records in 2015. In 2016, Rrose issued split singles with Kangding Ray, Orphx, and Tujurikkuja, additionally releasing the collaborative EP The Lotus Eaters with Lucy, and the solo EP Arc Unknown. Lucy and Rrose issued The Lotus Eaters II in 2018, and subsequently released two albums as the Lotus Eaters. Horvitz made statements clarifying his complex relationship with gender identity, stating that Rrose is a persona and that he does not identify as female, while calling on promoters to book more inclusive lineups. In 2019, Rrose released The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn, a recording of a festival performance with composer Charlemagne Palestine, reworking his 1976 piece "The Golden Mean." Rrose also issued the techno full-length Hymn to Moisture. In 2020, Rrose compiled the 2020 ambient compilation Air Texture VII along with Silent Servant, and released the digital-only Organ Studies, Vol. 1. The 2023 EP Tulip Space preceded Rrose's full-length Please Touch, the project's most thorough hybrid of techno rhythms and psychoacoustic mind-trickery. ~ Paul Simpson
