Featuring a new foreword by Molly Jong-Fast, THE NAUGHTY NINETIES is a sexual history of the 1990s when the tabloids, the tawdry, and the titillating took over Washington, Hollywood, and Madison Avenue.

THE NAUGHTY NINETIES examines the scandal-ridden decade when our public and private lives began to blur due to the rise of the web, reality television, and the wholesale tabloidization of pop culture. David Friend offers an unfiltered look into the captains of the culture wars and an indispensable roadmap for understanding the path that led us to the Trump era.

With keen wit and meticulous reporting, David Friend shares firsthand accounts from the unforgettable personalities who shaped the decade, from
Anita Hill to Monica Lewinsky, Demi Moore to Madonna—not to mention Lorena Bobbitt and Heidi Fleiss. He also uncovers new revelations about the accidental discovery of Viagra, how porn brought America online, and the escapades of Bill and Hillary ClintonMichael Douglas and Sharon StonePamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, and everything not sacred and definitely profane about this libidinous decade.

David Friend is most famous for his photographic editorial work. In The Naughty Nineties, he painted an accurate and creative picture of sex in that decade and its huge impact on our world, not just then but now, especially given recent and ongoing news. I would urge it be read by all good, thinking people and by our government leaders.
The touchy subject is delivered with extraordinary wit and style. The interviews are astounding in quantity and quality. This is a very worthwhile read for many reasons; I am recommending it to friends.

The author does an excellent job of providing an overview of the evolution of morality in the US in the 1990s. I think he ticked all the boxes—from The Vagina Monologues to Viagra, from Botox to porn. As a history of the culture and morality of the ‘90s, this book is thorough and very interesting. But when it comes to delineating the causes behind the moral landscape of that decade, the book is a bit of a disappointment. Despite the fact that Clinton was president for most of the ‘90s and his sexual exploits were all over the news, it seems like an oversimplification to blame every single change in morality and every single sexual trend on Bill Clinton. I would posit that the president’s behavior was as much an effect as a cause of the promiscuous ‘90s. A lot of other events and trends added up to the climate of that decade. Although the author touches on the advent of the birth control pill in the ‘60s, and the women’s movement of the ‘60s and ‘70s, he omits many other things that played a part—the change in women’s circumstances during and as a result of WWII, the Great Depression, the fledgling sexual freedoms of the 1920s, even the demise of the corset. But the book is still a good read, and some of the author’s insights at least cover the what, if not the why .

When I first saw this book, I will admit that I thought it was really cool and I was very eager to read this. At first, it was interesting, funny, and a sorta-kinda trip down memory lane. Then, as I dove deeper into the book three major issues occurred that kind of ruined it for me.

    1) My god did he continue to talk and talk and talk in some places. While the content was good and it did a pretty good job describing the events, I feel that he over expanded too get some more pages. While doing this one or two times would be OK, about half of the chapters felt longer than they needed to be because of useless dialogue that he included.

    2) The organization of the book sucked. It would go from a chapter on culture to a chapter on politics, to two chapters on culture to two chapters on politics and back and forth. I get that making this a linear history would be hard, but split the book into two parts wouldn't be too much to ask. There were times too where he would have a chapter on a phenomena that happened in the late 90's and then the next chapter would be on something regarding the 1992 presidential election. It was just weird that the book would be split up this way

    3) The footnotes. I have seen this as a common complaint and I agree. The purpose of a footnote is a sentence of two to describe something in the text that would make it easier to understand without have to waste time in the main story. When a footnote is as long as the entire page, you need to either include it in the main text of not include it at all. Many times I would forget what I was reading about because I spent all my attention on what was in the note.

The book was OK. Some of the chapters I smiled and laughed, but by the end, I just wanted to finish it.

David Friend has written a witty, readable cultural history of the 1990's and how it has shaped contemporary American society. It is an often funny but sobering chronicle of a nation losing its sense of reason, modesty, and shame to narcism, celebrity, and greed. No one has done a better job of explaining how our country fractured into warring cultures. If you want to know how we ended up in this Trumpian moment, read this stunning fast-paced book. This book will define the 1990's.

I lived through nineties but had forgotten much of the truly crazy and seismic sexual and culturally defining moments of the decade. This book brought those events back and reminded me just how crazy that decade was. As important, this cultural history helps bring context to our current political and social milieu(what Friend calls the "Trump Teens"). This is no dry recounting of events but is a well written, funny and at times touching account of America's not too distant past. Read this book and you will be both entertained and informed. Highly recommended.

This book is engagingly written and impeccably researched by one of the pre-eminent cultural journalists of our time. By turns fun and lighthearted, then thought-provoking and eye-opening, it makes one introspective about one's own sexual mores and what influenced them. On an anthropological level, it provides an illuminating cultural context for the ascent of the Sexual-Miscreant-In-Chief currently occupying the oval office. A must-read.

You will appreciate the biting irony that the public dissemination of B. Clinton's affairs made the public's acceptance of Trump's conduct permissible.
