An introduction to Bassivière

How would you describe Bassivière in a nutshell?

Just south of the Dordogne in the region of Lot-et-Garonne in southwest France, Bassivière are five boutique holiday apartments in an original 17th century farmhouse. The barn and the medieval tower now house luxurious loft apartments with contemporary industrial design. The entire property has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere with lots of space. It’s embedded in nature and has all the comforts one could want.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Bassivière?

Bassivière might just be the kind of rural country holiday you’ve been dreaming of in France. The old structures carry an incredible charm and the contemporary design and fun creations within each apartment make it a unique place to visit. Original stonewalls and oak ceiling beams are combined with urban steel, concrete floors and huge windows. It is comfortable yet at the same time has a very attractive modern-vintage feeling.

Who should stay at Bassivière and who should rather book something else?

Most of our guests come here for the good food, the good wine and a nice romantic getaway, especially in months like May, June, September, and October when we have mostly couples. During July and August we do have a lot of families coming to stay with us. Therefore, the ideal type of guest really depends on each individual month. We do have quiet times that are rather peaceful but we also have busier times when there are several families here at one time.

What is the food like at Bassivière?

La Cantine Perchée, the restaurant at Bassivière, is open five days a week. We serve organic food that is bought fresh daily from local farmers. The dishes we serve are mostly regional Mediterranean cuisine, high in quality yet simple and not pretentious at all. It is honest food people can enjoy together in a group or just as a couple.

Our apartments are rented as holiday apartments so that our guests can choose which meals they want to include in their individual package. We offer breakfast and dinner regularly and lunches from mid-June through mid-September. Guests can also order fresh bread and even take-away picnics. Yet, each apartment does have a fully equipped kitchen as well.

For those who prefer to leave the premises, there are several really nice restaurants in the area. This is a region that is known for its good food and we therefore have everything from Michelin star restaurants to smaller authentic restaurants.

Bassivière rooms & rates

Bassivière is surrounded by hills and small farms and is located on two and a half hectares of land. As the houses sit on quite a slope, there is a nice view of the swimming pool and the wooded hills in the distance. All the buildings are arranged with enough distance between them to ensure privacy. We have a long driveway with trees on each side and parking spots for our guests. An old cow barn is at the end of the drive, which now houses four of the apartments. Just opposite the old farmhouse where we reside is a medieval pigeon tower from the 15th century, which was turned into a holiday home. When you walk past the farmhouse there’s our glass and steel restaurant La Cantine Perchée built against it. There is also a heated swimming pool that all guests can use.

There are 5 loft-style apartments of which four are within the old barn and the fifth is in the original Pigeonnier. The apartments are about 100 to 140 square meters and each of them has a different layout with creative and fun sleeping areas for the kids. The four apartments in the barn combine country-atmosphere with industrial design and contemporary luxury. They are set up over two or three levels, some with a mezzanine, all with huge windows and private terraces. The old medieval tower was turned into apartment No 5 with two bedrooms. It is ideal for couples or small families. It is certainly the most romantic of all five. It is very private, separated off from the other apartments and, like the others, has access to a private outside area. An old stone bread oven in the living area is the focal point of the space, creating a charming atmosphere with lots of warmth and comfort.

Our heated swimming pool is very popular, especially with the kids. The outdoor play area for the kids with swings, a trampoline, table tennis and a zip line is a great meeting point for all the kids. There are a lot of people who come here in July and August with families. The apartments cater to families and each of them has a special sleeping area for the little ones.

Our guests can book massages at our massage room, take yoga lessons, and we can organize wine tastings at one of the chateaus nearby.

Furthermore we do offer art workshops for the entire family and also have art exhibitions on the premises.

Most of our guests come to enjoy the wonderful food and wine from Bassivière’s restaurant, and also to experience a romantic getaway in the off-season. On-site, we have a soccer field for children and adults as well as a nice play area with a zip line and a trampoline that kids love to play on. This region is known for its good food and we always recommend taking a wine tour and visiting some of the vineyards between Bergerac and Cahors. That goes really well with a visit to the markets and to some of the huge medieval castles that are only a 15 to 30-minute drive away from Bassivière.

Many of our guests also enjoy canoeing in the Dordogne or doing a lot of walking or cycling. We have set walks from here to several beautiful places in the area. There are also smaller roads with little traffic, making it perfect for cycling. A fun climbing park is only 10 mins away.

The location of Bassivière

Bassivière is in the middle of the medieval Bastide area in southwest France. The name dates back to the 100-year war that was fought here when the French and the English built many defensive Bastides. The closest airport is only 30 kilometers away. Yet, we are off the beaten track, in rural France. This region has lots of rolling hills and beautiful views. The area is excellent for walking or cycling and there aren’t too many tourists here. The closest village, Villeréal, is a small, old medieval town with small shops, an old square with arches and the original, charming markets. On the other side of our property lies Monflanquin, a beautiful hilltop town, which is also not overrun by tourists.

The Périgord, which is now part of Lot-et-Garonne, is truly beautiful with all its green rolling hills, sunflower fields, orchards, small farms, and very nice weather. With all the medieval towns close by it does feel like stepping back in time. Tourists are only slowly discovering this region, so it is still rather quiet here.

When is the best time to visit Dordogne?

Bassivière is open from Easter until the end of October and during that time each month has something different to offer. In May and June everything is green and in bloom. Nine out of ten years the weather is perfect during those months. With temperatures at around 25 degrees in June it really is a beautiful time to be in this part of France, with long nights and overall peace and quiet. July and August can be very warm and busy as many tourists come to visit during the summer months. Starting in September the weather is usually still good with above 20 degrees at the end of October but the nights get a bit colder.
