This book is a gorgeous, photographic ode to the magic of southern coastal Italy in the summer by renowned travel, fashion, and lifestyle photographer Lucy Laucht.

A languorous August afternoon. That brilliant light and those impossible Mediterranean blues. The touch of sun on hot skin. And everywhere, the sounds of laughter and lighthearted conversation. Captured by photographer Lucy Laucht, these lyrical scenes of Naples, Ischia, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Puglia, Sicily, and the Aeolian and Egadi Islands are an ode to the Italian way of summer and that distinctly Italian art of sweet idleness.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Nobody captures the Italian sunlight the way Lucy does—her images are transporting. There's a soulfulness and a depth in her work that really gets at the essence of this beautiful country.―Yolanda Edwards, founder and editor of Yolo Journal

"Lucy has a great eye for finding style where it naturally exists.
Il Dolce Far Niente is a celebration of the inherent beauty of coastal Italy and its people - and of the Italian way of enjoying summer. This is not a book of pretentious exclusive hotels and restaurants; rather, it is a complete view of the seaside at its best - including young and old, rich and poor, locals and visitors. Having traveled to the Amalfi Coast in my twenties and visited Puglia just last summer, I’m reminded that there is so much more to see. I must go back. Soon!"―Amanda Brooks, Founder of Cutter Brooks Shop and Author

Ah, Italy in summer—a flirtation between sunbeams and cobblestones, where every gelato cone tells a tale. Lucy Laucht perfectly captures the timeless appeal of a season that dances between lemon groves and secret beaches, laughter and amore.―
Marie-Louise Sciò, CEO & creative director of the Pellicano Hotels group

Coffee table book featuring Italian summer beautry - great for vacation planners OR dreamers.
I love books where the author RISKS being called out for not effectively telling a story well with words. I mean that in a “good way”, because the author (and photographer) Lucy Laught, with Lee Marshall, tells a compelling story, while letting images tell the story as much as the words. I read this one through twice, and the first time I focused primarily on the photos. (The second round I read the copy before matching words to photo.)I love that the author also uses epigrams very selectively. One in particular in Chapter Two - The Aeolian Islands, is this “rule”: “Keep things simple. Leave complications to watchmakers.” I’m confident that this aphorism is even more lovely in its native tongue. It’s also a good summary of what the author, through photos and words, does in telling a lovely, and calming, story about “the sweet joy of doing nothing”.A friend of mine recently returned from a very relaxing vacation in Italy, and she confirmed what this book tells me. She noticed in the various islands she stayed, she noticed that people were NOT preoccupied with social media, electronic devices, and minutiae. They were too busy eating, talking, enjoying the company of their family and friends, and “doing nothing”.

This is a beautiful coffee-table-style book. But happily, it's not as heavy or oversized as a coffee table book. The retro pictures are gorgeous. The book is both a nice reminder to me of my past trips to Italy, and it makes me eager to visit again!

After a couple of trips to the southern coast of Italy, I have often found myself daydreaming and wondering, What makes that place so memorable? This author and photographer, more than anyone, has captured the things I loved most about the region. I keep this book handy and when life seems to close in a little, I can sit in my reading chair and be transported right back to Italy again. It's an inspiration to continue to strive to find the Sweetness of Doing Nothing in everyday life. Thank you for this project!

Three of the things on my long list of favorite things are travel, photography and beaches. So naturally this book caught my attention. The author has divided the book into 7 regions in Italy. It is mostly photographs but she talks about each region with information mostly about the beaches but also touching on food or other items of interest. It is not at all meant to be a travel guide, put more of a general interest coffee table book. The photography in the book ranges from some very beautiful scenery to some colorful artistic shots but I would say the majority would be human interest “snapshots”. I think it definitely provides a realistic view of what it is like to be there. I have found it very interesting to peruse and maybe get a feeling of what it might like to visit the beaches in these regions.

To help understand how I rate items:

My philosophy is, that for a rating system to be effective, the highest rating and the lowest rating should be reserved for a relatively small percentage of the best and the worst products. If I give a product four stars, it is because I believe it is a very good product. To get five stars from me requires a product to go above and beyond and really impress me beyond my expectations. By the same token, a product has to be VERY, VERY bad to get only one star from me. One thing that I DON'T take into consideration with my ratings is price. I may make a general statement such as “this is a good value” but it will not affect my star rating. The reason is that product prices change, even from day-to-day. Also what one person may consider a good price someone else might not. I feel it is more important to review the quality and features of a product and let the buyer decide whether the current price is worth it to them. Another thing that I don't take into consideration are issues with shipping. This is because the seller does not always have control over that. Following is each of the five categories of *stars* and how I assign them to a product:

***** Five stars - The product exceeded my expectations. I really love it and would actively suggest it to friends and would certainly purchase it again if needed.

**** Four stars - The product met my expectations. It does what it claims to do. I like it and would recommend it to someone if they asked about it. I would Most likely purchase it again if needed .

*** Three stars - The product is average and for the most part does what it claims. There may be a few things I don't like about it. If I recommended it to someone, I would state my reservations. I may purchase it again if I could not find a better alternative.

** Two stars - The product fell far short of my expectations. It may, in some respects, do what it claims to do but has far too many problems to overlook. I would never recommended it to someone nor would I ever purchase it again. There is a good possibility I would return it.

    * One star - The product is terrible. It has way too many cons and few if any pros. I would actively warn my friends away from it and would most likely return it if possible.

This particular coffee table book seems to be the darling of influencers, I keep seeing it in home decor tours. And I can see why. Right now I have it styled with my Surf Shack book and it looks great. I am happy to add this to my collection of coffee table books. I love the reminder of the Italian way of life: "the sweetness of doing nothing." Si, si, per favore. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to add to their coffee table collection or to give as a gift to someone who plans on going to Italy or just got back. It will transport you to the sweet, laid back, colorful beach life along the Italian coast.

Il Dolce Far Niente: The Italian Way of Summer is a love letter in words and photographs to a place and a season incredibly important to both the writer and photographer. This beautiful hardcover will sweep you away with its mix of color and black-and-white photos of the people and places on Italy’s beaches. The book is broken into 7 major sections: Naples, The Aeolian Islands, Ischia, The Amalfi Coast & Capri, Sicily, Puglia, and The Egadi Islands. The photos are a mixture of land and sea, where of course Italy’s beauty shines. Other photos capture the people sunbathing with a bit of everyday life— and some food portraits show up, too. The writing is also engaging and has taught me so much about Italian culture (the food, the history, the people, the mythology) and its islands

I like to travel, and while I've been to northern Italy, I have yet to make it to the south. I'd definitely like to get there at some point. So I was very interested in this book when it popped up on my Vine recommendations.

First thing to note, the focus of this book is the photos. A lot of the photos are quite good, interesting without being too arty. The colors are a bit muted and color graded toward pastels with an emphasis on the blues and oranges, obviously a stylistic choice on the part of the author. They're printed in a matte format, which helps to give them a vintage look.

The text is a bit on the superficial side, though it does give a glimpse of life in these regions. If you're looking for a travel guide this isn't it, but it's enough to give you some impression of how things are there.

The book focuses heavily on beaches and people swimming or hanging out in the sun, with occasional side forays into food. For me that is the weakest part of the book, as being honest I'm not generally terribly interested in beaches. I prefer to explore, and would have liked to see a bit more depth and variety in the exploration of the region. But of course the author has her focus and far be it from me to attempt to impose my different wants on her.

Would I recommend this book? If Italian beaches are your thing, absolutely. For me, it's not my general interest, but I did learn a few things that I'm sure will be helpful when my travels eventually take me there.

Paper choice a bit too matte for my taste. Satin finish would have brought out the images and post production a little more, well curated and nice story telling von die Frau. An interesting mix of digital and analog photography. Bought 2 so it must have been good. 5 out of 5 potatoes

…and borrows too much from those who have gone before. Pictures as cliched as the text - and for a photographer apparently “devoted to natural light”, best to revisit how to expose against that natural light. Returned to Amazon. I resented the walk to the Post Office. Any edition of Touring Club is a better and cheaper buy.
