Batch Cocktails: Make-Ahead Pitcher Drinks for Every Occasion Hardcover – March 19, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BUZZFEED
As anyone who has hosted a dinner party knows, cocktail hour is the most fun part of the evening for guests—but the most stressful for whomever is in charge of keeping the drinks flowing. The solution, though, is simple: batch it! In this fun collection, Maggie Hoffman offers 65 delicious and creative cocktails that you don't have to stir or shake to order; rather, they are designed to stay fresh when made ahead and served out of a pitcher. Recipes such as Tongue in Cheek (gin, Meyer lemon, thyme, Cocchi Rosa), Friendly Fires (mezcal, chile vodka, watermelon, lime), Birds & Bees Punch (rum, cucumber, green tea, lemon), and even alcohol-free options are organized by flavor profile—herbal, boozy, bitter, fruity and tart, and so on—to make choosing and whipping up a perfect pitcher of cocktails a total breeze.

Editorial Reviews
Review
— Publishers Weekly, Starred Review
“After years of writing about drinks and mixing them herself, Maggie Hoffman’s shared tips, tricks and recipes from trendsetting bartenders all over the country in this beautifully-photographed handbook for hosts. Maggie’s done the math, so pick a recipe by flavor profile or occasion and follow her insightful directions to scale it up into a batch, so you can sit down and savor your handiwork once the cocktail hour commences.”
— JIM MEEHAN, author of Meehan’s Bartender Manual and The PDT Cocktail Book
“There is nothing more relaxing than having a drink among friends, especially when everyone is sipping the same thing—the shared experience of trying something new is a great conversation starter. This beautiful collection of recipes has me itching to throw a party just for an excuse to make a few pitchers full."
– STELLA PARKS, James Beard award-winning author of Bravetart
“As Trader Vic himself once said, 'Spend time with your guests—not making mixed drinks.' In her new book, Maggie gives you dozens of delicious ways to free yourself from behind the bar and become the host with the most! With these recipes and techniques at your disposal, you’ll soon find yourself famous for both your charming fêtes AND witty banter!"
– MARTIN CATE, James Beard Award-winning author and owner of Smuggler’s Cove San Francisco.
Praise for The One-Bottle Cocktail:
"It’s a book that will at once simplify your entertaining while simultaneously making it so much more rewarding.”
- J. Kenji López-Alt, author of The Food Lab
"Consult this booze bible for easy new twists on classic summer cocktails."
- Cosmopolitan
“These recipes bring two of my favorite food trends into the world of drinking: simplicity and seasonality. If I want a drink that requires twelve obscure spirits, I’ll order it at a bar. This book is coming with me to the farmers’ market.”
- Ari Shapiro, host of NPR’s All Things Considered
"This is the kind of book that every home cocktail-maker should keep on their shelf."
- Niki Achitoff-Gray, Serious Eats
"These inexpensive, easy recipes will make cocktail drinkers out of the non-believers."
- Epicurious
"These are professional-grade tricks that can help even the most entry-level home bartender put a culinary cocktail in everyone’s hand.”
- Jeffrey Morgenthaler, author of The Bar Book

But as anyone who has hosted a cocktail hour knows, there’s nothing worse than scrambling at the last minute, trying to mix drinks as your guests walk through the door. It’s hard to hold a conversation while searching for lost bitters, knocking over the jigger on the counter, and rattling a shaker full of ice (let alone trying to get the damn thing open). And without fail, just when you’re finally about to sit down, your friends are ready for a second round.
This is why I’ve gathered together recipes of make-ahead drinks created by some of my favorite bartenders around the country: to set up that moment of calm. With this book in hand, you can make a bunch of cocktails all at once, in advance, and serve them without breaking a sweat. Most of these recipes yield eight or ten servings, but it’s easy to scale up or down depending on how many people you’re expecting. I’ll share the techniques and proportions you need to make cocktails that are every bit as delicious as what you’d find in a fancy bar—drinks that are way more sophisticated than the spiked lemonades and sherbet punches of your past, yet totally easy to execute.
I hope you’ll use these recipes as an excuse to invite friends over,
even if your house is messy, even if you don’t have enough chairs. Don’t fret over serving a perfect multicourse meal—order pizza. The drinks are made. They’re ready to pour. You’re not rushing around fussing and jiggering and shaking, being the frenzied “perfect” host. There’s nowhere else you need to be but with your people, sharing a glass or two.
Maybe reclaiming a relaxing cocktail hour won’t save the world, but looking away from our phones for a minute to reconnect with actual human beings over a drink may very well save us from isolation.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2020Batching cocktails is a great idea for many obvious reasons. But just multiplying up a recipe for a single cocktail to make a batch can get a little mathy, and you have to watch your tablespoons and your ounces and…dashes? Also, any flaws imperceptible on a single-drink scale could be magnified by batching up. In a larger preparation there’s elbow room for more ingredients, complexity and subtlety. I dine regularly with a cocktail loving group of friends. So this book interested me and we’ve been thrilled with the first three recipes we tried.
Mind you, these are not the author’s recipes. They were collected from identified professional bartenders across the US. I like the idea that each creator knows and stands behind his or her recipe. Since you end up with a huge amount of the preparations and they incorporate expensive spirits, you better choose your recipe carefully and hope you like the mix. So far so good.
The introduction and tools/tips sections are very helpful and clear. Batching vessels and the importance of ice and dilution in a cocktail are taken into account.
There’s a broad variety among the 60 or so recipes and the author has divided them into sensible categories, with more fine grained sorting in the back of the book. The spec for each preparation is given in cups and tablespoons rather than ounces. Most of the cocktails are made in two parts: the initial mix of spirits a day or so in advance followed by addition of freshly squeezed juices within two hours of serving time. She provides a consistent format for each drink, with a lead paragraph that suggests what the final product will be like and where/when it would be best enjoyed, which brands of spirits will work best, and what garnishes or variations can be tried. When a recipe calls for an exotic spirit, she’ll suggest what you might do with the rest of the bottle.
The first recipe I tried was Lace and Fancy Things. It incorporates cantaloupe, and brings the flavor and color of the fruit out potently. My dinner club loved it and clamored for more. So I tried Porch Swing at Sundown, an exotic tequila/Chartreuse/Aperol combination. Another gorgeous and wildly delicious mix. Tonight we tried One Star Yelp Review (seriously?), a vodka/cachaca/amaro/grapefruit mix. It had wonderful complexity and bracing bitterness. Stimulating!
My only critique is in the *horribly* clunky titles of these drinks. And an important note: with a large supply of delicious, smooth, potent cocktail mix right at hand, it is all too easy to drink too much. Take care of yourself and your guests and don’t let that happen. But this book is wonderful fun and I expect to be exploring it for a long time to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2019When I was younger I was a serious cocktail aficionado, visiting all the latest craft cocktail spots and regularly making my own drinks at home. But with a wife, child, and my own business to run, these days it usually seems like too much! Too much shopping, too much fuss, too much cleanup for just one little drink. Cue me picking up this fabulous new book!
Maggie Hoffman offers a perfect assortment of subtle and delightful cocktails to please any mood or palate. There are definitely a few with special syrups and juices that require some work to make, but for the most part these are very accessible recipes. I even made chipotle syrup! It wasn't too much of a pain and really made the end product special. Putting in a little extra work makes sense when the yield isn't just one drink—it can serve a whole party or a week's worth of nightcaps or aperitifs. I love looking in my fridge now and seeing my small selection of ready to drink cocktails alongside the wine. Even the citrus cocktails have kept better than I expected, not as good as fresh but definitely still worth drinking.
Caveats: Her instructions are precise, so be sure to stick to them! I've noticed they're just not quite as good when I'm substituting ingredients or freestyling a bit, she's truly found the best version of the recipe. And while I've loved most of the cocktails I've made so far, ultimately it's a matter of taste what you like—so it can be a bit of a bummer to have a whole liter of cocktails that you're not super excited about finishing.
Ultimately these are minor concerns. I can highly recommend this book! The cocktails are subtle and interesting, the instructions precise, and the concept has helped bring cocktails back into my regular rotation. Thanks Maggie!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2022The recipes are truly simple and easy to complete, with navigation to the recipes made simple in Kindle. However, some of the ingredients are a bit specialized; a few without suggested alternatives. Other than that, a great recipe book for whipping up a batch for a small gathering.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2019I’m really loving this book! I’ve been trying a new recipe each week, and so far it’s 4 for 4 winners. There’s great general advice on batching cocktails ahead of time (thus giving the host time to hang with the guests), and the recipes hit a broad spectrum of tastes, including some for the no-alcohol crowd. One thing I like is the inclusion of a few ingredients that were off my radar, such as Amaro Montenegro, which add new flavors to what I typically serve my friends. The book has gorgeous photography and great tips that should put inexperienced drink makers at ease. This is also a great gift for the cocktail person in your crowd, as there are sure to be a lot of new cocktails they may not be familiar with.
