the primary reason i decided to get this was that in the last 3 years, i just realized this, i've spent nearly a hundred dollars on just can openers. can you believe that??? nearly one hundred dollars on stupid can openers that some didn't even make it half way through a can of chicken noodle soup and others that just wore out over a couple of weeks to a couple of months...and NONE of them cost over $10 but every single one was made in the People's Republic of You Know Where.
i got fed up with it and decided to "buy once, cry once" with this one by EZ-DUZ-IT.
now to the INITIAL review...
CONS;
It is not "ergo-dynamic". which is just another marketing ploy to add a buck to the price.
It is not compact. it's a full sized can opener, not a Swiss Army knife.
It is not outfitted in florals, pastels or vibrant colors. put down the Martha Stewart's magazine and nobody gets hurt.
PROS;
It is really easy to use. like i said earlier, it went through four cans, three 12oz's and one 16oz, like a hot knife through butter. the grip was secure, the rotating handle was EXTREMELY easy to use and i do have the beginnings of arthritis in both hands along with cubital tunal syndrome in my left arm and peripheral neuropathy in both arms.
It's not dainty. it's built like a tank and if anything in your kitchen should survive a house fire, earthquake, wild fire, nuke strike, asteroid impact or mostly peaceful protest it should be your can opener.
It's "full constructed" as in, the handle "legs" go all the way down and don't just end in a 1/8th or 1/4th inch tab glued into a plastic handle.
so this this ends my initial review. i'll be posting a 30 day, 90 day six month and 1 year follow up but as it stands right now, if you are in need of a truly decent quality can opener that will work and not give you the fits over a can of condensed milk then get this one.
oh, here's a few FYI's...
1. even though the description says that you can was with warm soapy water, DON'T and NEVER put ANY manual can opener into a dish washer. the best thing to do is to carefully, so as to not injure yourself, wipe down the can opener's contact and cutting surfaces with a clean dry cloth or dish towel. don't use oil. this can cause gumming and interfere with positive contact and lock-up with the can and the can opener.
2. 99.999% of the gunk that gets onto and into your can opener comes from the can. simple solution is to just wipe the can's top with a clean cloth or napkin. if you think that you need to use soap and water or cleaning wipes or sprays on your cans of food, you need to find a new grocery store.
3. don't just throw your can opener into a drawer. remember that this is a CUTTING INSTRUMENT. your $300 chef knife is a cutting instrument, albeit designed to cut different things differently, but it's purpose is to cut. so make a dedicated space/place/spot for it. back when i was a child, there used to be kitchen drawer inserts and these had slots for knives, forks, tablespoons, teaspoons and one wide spot that was too short for knives and forks and too short for spoons. that was because it was the can opener's place.
thanks for taking the time to read my review and i hope the information i gave helps.
Pros:
Opens cans with ridiculous ease. It pierces the can effortlessly. The crank handle is both huge and easy to grip; someone with very little hand strength can open a can very painlessly with this. (I tend to grab the handle more toward the center because it is faster and my hands are strong. It's a win, both ways.)
Handles are appropriately-soft, and should come off easily for serious cleaning. I do not expect the rubber/plastic handles to fail in my lifetime.
Made in USA, by presumably original tooling.
Cons: It's much heavier than a P-38, so I won't be taking it backpacking. (But then, there aren't many/any can openers lighter than a P-38.)
Other thoughts: It's just a can opener, right? But we've all struggled with bad can openers. This replaces a more-expensive Farberware opener of similar design that I got from a local store about a year ago. The Farberware worked reasonably well when it was new, but recently failed to grip the rim of the can without a fight, and it never worked as well as this EZ-Duz-It.
And a rebuttal to others reviewers: The only consistent complaint I've seen about this can opener (and the few other identical-ish US-made ones which are on Amazon, which all presumably come from the same factory) is that sometimes, the crank-handle gets locked up with rust. Some people seem to give up on it at this point, while others apply something like WD-40 and get it to turn freely again (but are often afraid to use it on food after that, because...chemicals).
Here's my take: It will probably only rust to that extent if you're washing it obsessively, which probably isn't needed. The can opener started off being a scoop of iron ore. It was refined with fire and chemistry into steel, and eventually rolled into a sheet, which was eventually stamped into a form, which was eventually chrome plated using...chemicals. Chemicals and oils and other unmentionable substances at every step of the way. After it is assembled it is then washed (with solvents [more chemicals!] and/or soap and water) and packaged for sale.
So. If/when my can opener seizes, I'll simply go to the garage and use a penetrating oil or WD-40 or maybe just some phosphoric acid (see also: the ingredients list on the cola in your fridge) and apply it to the rusted parts. Once it frees up, which it doubtless will, I'll give it a few dozen turns in both directions to abrade away most of the rust. And then I'll soak it with Dawn dish soap for a bit, and give it a few dozen more underwater turns to work the -chemicals- out of the innards.
After that, I'll rinse it well and let it dry completely -- ideally, outside on a warm and sunny day. Then I'll apply some vegetable/canola/olive/whatever oil from the cupboard, or food-grade mineral oil if I have some, wipe down the surface with a dry rag, and keep using it in the kitchen for another bunch-a more years.
It's a fool's mission to worry about the chemicals: Just wash them away if it bothers you.
It's important to maintain our steel kitchen tools properly and I suspect that, like good cast iron, this can opener will only get better with age.
1. Penetrates the lid easily
2. The handle turns smoothly, and with virtually no effort
A tool that is well made of seemingly durable materials, and designed to work efficiently and effortlessly. Reasonably priced. Recommended.
