How to Grow and Thrive After a Traumatic Loss

Few of us know how to navigate the territory of traumatic loss successfully.
Sweet Sorrow shows how we can respond and grow stronger from loss and suffering. Written by psychologist and certified bereavement trauma specialist Dr. Sherry Cormier, Sweet Sorrow chronicles the decade following the loss of her husband, father, mother, and only sibling.

This carefully considered work provides perspective on grief and healing over time. Its longer-term approach allows readers to have a more complete and accurate picture of the oscillations of grief over time. The book describes not only the immediate agony of the author's losses, but also the process of
starting over and making a successful new life as a single person full of hope and joy.

Sweet Sorrow combines the author's psychological expertise and clinical experience with the compelling art of memoir to illuminate the surprising ways in which loss survivors can grow and even thrive to achieve wholeness after heartbreaking, traumatic losses. Using findings from post-traumatic growth, as well as evidence-based psychological approaches, Sweet Sorrow illustrates through story and example:

  • Ways for grief survivors to start over
  • Tools to manage chaos and stress
  • How to let go, and to heal with new strategies and re-storying
  • Resources and recommendations for self-care
  • Tips and suggestions to respond creatively and helpfully to those around us suffering loss

Ultimately,
Sweet Sorrow is a book of inspiration intended to accompany readers through the processes of loss and grief much like a helpful Sherpa might guide a lost traveler. The author provides critical insight into the journey of death as experienced by a spouse.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Sweet Sorrow is an excellent book. Through a narrative approach, the book places an emphasis on the actual experience of the death of a loved one (husband). The author provides critical insight into the journey of death as experienced by a caretaker, in this case the spouse. The author speaks from ‘the heart’ and takes the reader through the journey of impending and then final loss. While the beginning of the book gives information about the unique challenges that the caregiver/ spouse faces, the end of the book is insightful in providing self-help information for the reader. -- Loretta Bradley, PhD, LPC, LMFT. NCC, Paul Whitfield Horn Professor, Texas Tech University, Former President of the American Counseling Association (ACA)

The literature is filled with personal memoirs of loss and professional texts on treating grief, but Cormier’s Sweet Sorrow singularly combines both in navigating traumatic loss in a realistic and growthful way. Particularly helpful are the information about grief oscillations over time, the contemplative questions, and her clinical suggestions on responding to grievers. A tender narrative AND a superb primer on helping others heal in one absorbing book! -- John C. Norcross, PhD, ABPP, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of Scranton, and author of “Self-Help That Works” and “Changeology”

Sherry Cormier takes us through her heart-breaking loss, then gifts us with a reassuring path back to fulfillment. You will be drawn in by her memoir, enlightened by her wisdom, inspired by her attention to detail and research. Rewards of this book are both personal and professional. -- Patricia Love, Psychotherapist and Author

Sweet Sorrow is very appropriately titled; Sherry Cormier does a marvelous job sharing in such a warm, tender manner her journey through her husband’s illness, death, grief and recovery. This book can help provide comfort to many who ask “why did this happen to me.” Sherry uniquely combines the writings of leading experts in the area of grief and spirituality with her own experiences of healing. Sweet Sorrow will validate many common and unusual experiences of those who are grieving and offers the reader many processes that help with finding balance and joy again. -- Ed Jacobs, Ph.D., Professor of Counseling, West Virginia University, Director, Impact Therapy Associates

An account of hope, promise, and resilience, Sweet Sorrow allows readers to witness a beautiful love story and a poignant grief journey. Beyond her authentic account of her own grief, Cormier draws upon her background as a therapist and studies in the field to guide readers through rebuilding their lives. I heartily endorse this book for anyone striving to support someone who is grieving and for those in the throes of deep overwhelming grief. The message of hope and resilience is palpable.

-- Anne H. Baker, Director of Adult Bereavement Services & Training Hospice Caring Inc.

An honest, moving, informative, and methodically crafted text that grips the reader’s heart, spirit, and mind. Sherry Cormier’s Sweet Sorrow navigates the reader through the terrain of loss and grief based on the author’s personal experience, psychological expertise, and clinical literature. A memoir, self-help book, and modern-day almanac brimming with inspirational quotes and practical tips that will resonate with grieving and non-grieving readers. -- Katarzyna Malecka, grief scholar and author of "Death in the Works of Galway Kinnell"

From the Author

Thank you for considering reading Sweet Sorrow. I wrote this book after a double whammy loss - losing my dad and husband within three months of one another. I was heartsick and bereft and didn't know how I could go on. I found very few resources that were actually helpful in terms of providing specific tips on ways to cope with grief and loss. I hope this book gives you the information you need to heal and I also hope it provides you with comfort and peace.

I stumbled on this book while browsing books on coping with grief - I wasn't doing well when I thought enough time had passed after my Father died, and then getting hit with a divorce shortly thereafter. I honestly struggled for several years to get my mojo back (so to speak), which never really came, so I started to think there was something wrong with me - that I wasn't coping well. And I wasn't - I was basically numbing out with booze and TV. Years went by until I finally had enough - and then I started reading a bunch of self-help books just to snap me out of the grief-depression. This was one of those books that helped me break free - I especially liked the chapters on Letting Go and Grief Survivors. It became clear to me that I was stuck in a negative grief-loop and just couldn't get out. Obviously, numbing out with distraction and drinking heavily isn't the best coping mechanism. But it was helpful reading about other grief stories and that there were some things I could actively do, such as connecting with nature, self-differentiation and reaching out to people (I had become totally isolated). Eventually, I took the nuggets from this book and others and basically forced myself to get out of the house! but I think this book helped me the most because it was so personal, and the writing was excellent, AND it gave me permission to heal on my own terms - and in my own time, albeit I probably prolonged my suffering needlessly, but I guess I just wasn't ready until I was! :-)

Sweet Sorrow is a valuable, easy to read and very well researched book about the lifelong process of healing after loss. It is like sitting down with an understanding, knowledgable friend and having a long conversation about grief and loss and even more importantly, a conversation about not only how grief transforms us, but how we heal from that loss. Dr. Cormier draws from her personal journey through grief as well as her many years of experience as a clinician, researcher and professor. Sweet Sorrow is a valuable resource for anyone coping with loss as well clinicians who also walk through that grief with their clients. I am grateful to have read this book both for myself and my clients.

This book, Sweet Sorrow, by Dr. Sherry Cormier, is a reference that everybody should at sometime, even there is no immediate need.
Every once in a while you find an unusually helpful discovey that is very useful in dealing with a difficult life problem. My wife of 29 years recently passed away and I felt that I needed to get a better sense of what my feelings and expectations were about. I had two previous wives who passed away, but that was a long time ago. Now, at age 85, everything seemed to be much different.
I began reading extensively and fortunately found a reference that was the right book for me, at the
right time: Sweet Sorrow. Dr. Sherry Cormier has assembled a narrative that clearly expressed the ups
and downs that we all know and that we had to deal with our loved one during the process that eventuated in the painful loss. She writes in a manner that makes you feel as if she was talking directly
to you. Her writing style is pleasurable and easy to read and absorb.
She references extensively and appropriately quotes of many wise individuals, like Joseph Campbell who
noted that "we must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us". The are many other exceptional references, one being Frday's Laws by Dr Paul J. Friday. In his list of
"Laws", the final conclusion is powerful: "the only things that lasts forever is -NOW".
There is so much more, which makes it definitely worthwhile reading.
I believe that the author covers many of the issues that we all experience over a lifetime, but she leaves us with an uplifting and lasting hope for life and the future.

This book is a beautiful love story, a witness to the author’s wisdom and resilience and a guidebook, sourced in practical literature and research, for navigating the often turbulent waters of loss and grief. I loved the author’s moving sharing about the role of dreams in guiding her to find peace with loss. As a counselor, and as someone who was suddenly widowed years ago, I know that such dreams are common, but their value in healing is not often discussed in the literature. The author’s matter-of-fact sharing about energetic ways she felt her husband’s presence after death will also comfort and move those of us who as grievers, have had similar experiences. This beautiful book is, at once, practical, deeply spiritual, personal, and creative. It looks at loss through the eyes of deep compassion, honesty and grace. The chapter that addresses how to help those who are enduring loss is moving and thorough, offering many useful suggestions for professionals, families and friends.

Cormier weaves together an intimate memoir and much wisdom about how to live through the loss of a deeply loved someone in our lives...the kind of loss that leaves a hole in our personal world. She allows us to witness her personal process of being with impending death, and then moving forward courageously through grieving and unfolding the next chapter of her life. Her ability to infuse research-based suggestions for how to care for ourselves or for others living through deep grief is extraordinary. As a clinician, I will add this book to my recommendations for clients facing grief and loss....

"Sweet Sorrow" is an intimate and compelling portrayal of grief from the inside out. Sherry takes the reader through her own raw emotional journey of losing her husband and soulmate, Jay. Throughout the book, she weaves compassion and clinical expertise giving the reader support to find their own path through the experience of loss. A must-read for clinicians working with grief and loss issues, both personally and in their professional roles as well as for anyone experiencing the pain of loss. Very readable and highly applicable to us all at some point in our lives. Thanks, Sherry, for this gift.
