This Country: Searching for Home in (Very) Rural America Paperback – September 12, 2023

—NPR, Books We Love 2023
NPR BEST BOOKS OF 2023 ● NEW YORKER BEST BOOKS WE’VE READ IN 2023● A gorgeously illustrated and written debut graphic memoir about belonging, identity, and making a home in the remote American West, by New Yorker cartoonist Navied Mahdavian.
Before Navied Mahdavian moved with his wife and dog in November of 2016 from San Francisco to an off-the-grid cabin in rural Idaho, he had never fished, gardened, hiked, hunted, or lived in a snowy place. But there, he could own land, realize his dream of being an artist, and start a family. Over the next three years, Mahdavian leaned into the wonders of the natural Idaho landscape and found himself adjusting to and enjoying a slower pace of living. But beyond the boundaries of his six acres, he was confronted with the realities of America’s political shifts and forced to confront the question: Do I belong here?
Mahdavian’s beautifully written and unflinchingly honest graphic memoir charts his growth and struggles as an artist, citizen, and new father. It celebrates his love of place and honors the relationships he makes in rural America, touching on dynamics like culture, environment, and identity in America, and even articulating difficult moments of racism and brutality he found there as a Middle Eastern American. With wit, compassion, and a sense of humor, Mahdavian’s insider perspective offers a unique portrait of one of the most remote and wild areas of the American West.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Why did urban, vegetarian, gun-wary Navied, of Iranian descent, have the big, bright idea to move with his wife to the frigid mountains of Idaho, months before Trump’s election? Riveting, searching, complex and, oh, hilarious, this memoir ultimately is a quest for strength, wildness, and love, for a deeper vision of all things Earth. Surely this is my favorite graphic memoir I’ve read in years.
―Deb Olin Unferth, author (Revolution: The Year I Fell in Love and Went to Join the War)
"Enamored of nature and dazzled by fantasies of the rugged west, a young mixed-race couple build a tiny home in the wilds of Idaho―and must confront an America at odds with itself. In This Country, Mahdavian explores today’s cultural divide with a keen eye and a graceful touch. The resulting portrait is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking, elegant and complex, brutal and tender. I dare you not to fall in love."
―Alia Volz, author (Home Baked: Marijuana, My Mother and the Stoning of San Francisco)
This Country is a hilarious and sometimes harrowing graphic memoir about the Mahdavians' quest to live self-sufficiently in rural Idaho. Learning how to cut down a tree to heat your own house and grow your own vegetables is only one part of it....Wonderful drawings and beautiful writing make this book a great read.
―Roz Chast, author and cartoonist (Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?)
“I knew Navied Mahdavian was one of the funniest cartoonists of his generation; This Country proves he is also one of its most subtle and sophisticated graphic storytellers. In Navied's hands, comics feel like poetry. Perfect ink drawings bring land, beast, and human, with all their delicacy and yearning, viscerally to life. This Country, a quintessential story of seeking a home in America and (maybe) finding it, and made me want to grant my own surroundings the grace, humor, and dignity of Navied's observant study.”
―Amy Kurzweil, cartoonist and author (Flying Couch: A Graphic Memoir)
A charming, wise, and haunting book. [I've known] that town quite well for the last thirty years, [and Mahdavian has] captured it in all its complexity."
―Christopher Guest, actor, screenwriter, and director (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, This is Spinal Tap)
“This Country is touching, personal, and frequently hilarious. Mahdavian weaves heavy themes of home and belonging with disarming moments of silliness and levity. It’s a story specific to his experience, yet relatable to anyone who has ever searched for a place to be.”
―Reza Farazmand, writer and illustrator of Poorly Drawn Lines
“Ostensibly, This Country is about a couple finding their place in the world and learning the true history of the land they're building a life on―a land that has seen both turmoil and awe―but amid the harsh truth, blatant racism, and struggles to fit in, there is so much beauty and humor and compassion. Mahdavian's drawings are deceptively simple, perfectly capturing the wonder of little everyday occurrences. Of time moving, a small family growing and changing, of an entire country still reckoning with past and present mistakes. This is a very important book for pretty much everyone.”
―Julia Wertz, cartoonist and author of Impossible People

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2025"This Country" by Navied Mahdavian is a beautifully told graphic memoir that’s told in both an honest and funny way. The story follows Mahdavian and his wife as they leave city life behind and move to a very rural part of Idaho. What I loved most is how he takes such simple, mundane experiences and turns them into something deep and entertaining at the same time.
The author’s drawings are amazing, doing their job of telling the story just right. They go perfectly with the story, sometimes conveying more than the words. His mix of humor and reflection makes the book easy to read while still touching on big topics like racism, isolation, and the environment. But he never makes it feel too heavy. Instead, he raises important questions in a way that feels natural and personal. One small critique is that the pacing sometimes slows down a bit too much in my opinion, especially in scenes where not much is happening.
What makes this memoir such a great read is its unique perspective. It shows what it’s like to search for belonging as someone who doesn’t quite fit into the community around them. Mahdavian doesn’t paint anyone as the enemy or point fingers, he just shows the complexity of living in a divided world, with grace and a bit of humor. His writing reminds us that even in unfamiliar places, small moments of connection and growth can still be found.
After having the chance to hear the author read from the book in my college class, I was even more excited to read the rest. He seems like a warm and funny person, and that same tone comes through on every page. This is a story that sticks with you. It’s heartfelt, creative, and well worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025This book is an amazing autobiography written as a Graphic Novel. It goes through the life of Navied and his wife as they move away from the city and do their best to adjust to a rural country. The illustrations are beautiful and portray the story excellently alongside the dialogue. The story tells of Navied’s exposure to a culture he is unfamiliar with and causes him to reflect on his own beliefs. He has to face off against the elements of nature from where he and his wife constructed their cabin, both the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter, while during their best to make friends who those in the land. It also discusses the beauty of nature and the beauty of all the many animals that run by. Navied uses amazing humor in all the right spots that enhance the story wonderfully instead of taking away from it. He also includes amazing references, such as references to Greek Mythology, that helps the audience get a better sense of what he’s imagining. It’s a good entertaining read that gives insight into the land and both the good and the bad. It doesn’t paint Idaho in a bad picture in any way, despite the differences in beliefs that some of the people in Idaho had. This book is a wonderful Graphic Novel that illustrates what it’s like to live in an unknown and foreign land. Though the land is different from what Navied was used to, it still seems he enjoyed the time spent there, even if it wasn’t all he originally thought it to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2025In today’s political climate, “This Country” is a perfect read. It is a graphic memoir that feels both quiet and sharp at the same time. It invites you to slow down, observe, and wrestle with discomfort.
While the current political discussions feel like shouting matches, this book offers something different. It approaches these conversations around race, belonging, and identity in a new way. Honesty without defensiveness. Reflection without moralizing.
The story follows Mahdavian and his wife as they leave their urban life in San Fran and move to rural Idaho. With this change, Mahdavian quickly realizes that starting over in a mostly white, conservative town is not as idyllic as it first seemed. His outsider status isn’t always explicitly addressed by those around him, but it’s always felt. Mahdavian explores what it means to live with both kindness and suspicion aimed in your direction through intentional illustrations and moments of dry humor.
As a person of color, I’ve found that the emotional nuance of this book deeply resonant. It doesn’t fall into the trap of over-explaining racial tension or making it digestible for others. Instead, it captures that strange middle space. Of being both visible and invisible. Of being both welcomed and scrutinized.
And in between the honest discomfort, understated humor, and strong pacing, we can see the snippets of charm that is rural Idaho. The cute birds, gardening adventures, folklore, tales, and struggles with nature, it’s all illustrated in this graphic memoir.
It’s one of the most fitting reads for this cultural moment because it doesn’t shy around the hard questions. And it makes this memoir worth reading and revisiting.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2024I loved every illustration and every page in this book. Navied drew me into his journey with captivating storytelling, illuminating tidbits of information that kept me wondering how he knew so many lesser-known facts, and drawings that told stories on their own without the need of a caption. His memoir was an enjoyable read that at times made me laugh, at times made me cry, and at times made me marvel at humanity. I couldn’t put the book down and wished it was longer once I finished it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2024Mahdaian reveals himself in this sensitively illustrated story of his journey in a way that broadens my understanding of such human plights as his. Challenges he faced, while unique to him, are universal in that we all feel stymied by external circumstances. I loved the often subtlety of the dear illustrations. This little book will live high on my list of favorites.
