Q&A Paperback – October 15, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Everything you wanted to know about storytelling or Adrian Tomine but were too afraid to ask
“That would’ve been too easy and spontaneous for me, and I had to find a way to make everything more complicated.”
And yet for over thirty years, bestselling author, screenwriter, and New Yorker cover artist Adrian Tomine’s work has set the standard for contemporary storytelling. With Tomine, his readership has grown from the dedicated following of his comic-book series Optic Nerve to include a wider but still engaged, opinionated, and ever-inquiring public. And now, for the first time in print, Tomine responds to his readers directly, tackling their questions and comments with generosity, humor, and vulnerability.
Q&A is one part personal history, one part masterclass in crafting quality entertainment. With questions pulled from his time at the Substack Writers’ Residency, and with additional, new material, Q&A is an indispensable addition to the collections of eagle-eyed fans and aspiring artists, writers, and cartoonists alike.
Tomine answers questions about his preferred tools, his creative process, the ups and downs of adaptation, and perhaps most importantly―how to pronounce his last name. Illustrated with drafts, outtakes, and photos from the artist’s personal collection, this rare peek into the mind of a contemporary cartooning giant lays out the method to his meticulous brand of madness. The artist looks back on his career in response to queries from his―maybe adoring but mostly curious―public with his signature dry wit and unflinching, self-deprecating honesty.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Part advice manual for aspiring cartoonists, part memoir. Tomine... reflects candidly and wittily on topics including the solitary nature of cartooning, writing to artist idols, parenthood’s influence on his art, and adapting a graphic novel into a screenplay.” ―The New Yorker
“Q&A is something of a how-to book [by one of] the most idiosyncratic and interesting comics creators around [as well as] an impressionistic self-portrait... As in his graphic work, Tomine is self-deprecating and often very funny.” ―David Ulin, Los Angeles Times
“Perfect for anyone who’s a curious, budding creative spirit.” ―Hannah Bae, San Francisco Chronicle
“The book is at its best [when] Tomine, one of the biggest names in indie comics... really delves into what it is like to dedicate your life to comics.” ―Bryan Hood, Vanity Fair
“Delightfully inspiring.” ―Steven Heller, PRINT Magazine
“A cartoonist’s gentle and charming epistolary memoir... Tomine’s writing is compassionate, empathetic, and tongue-in-cheek, and his narratorial voice has the intimate, confessional frankness of a good friend.” ―Kirkus Reviews
“With sincerity and self-deprecating humor, reading Q&A feels like having a chat in a coffee shop.” ―Blogcritics

A good read. More professional autobiography than manual of technique. Recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025Informative for those considering a career in this field and also an enjoyable read. If you're expecting a discourse on art, perspectives, color theory, this is not that. This is more like having a conversation with a friend, talking about his job (a job he likes.) The section about what tools he uses - which pens, which pencil, which paper - has the feel of being "let in on the secret" of an artist or craftsman of many years experience. Because he also tells you what he doesn't do, and why. Example: Just use cheap paper. No need for expensive imported watercolor or special sketch paper. Also interesting is the information on how he does portions of the work by hand on paper, but other parts with software (I'm not going to spoil the surprise on that one.)
A good portion of the book will give you insights into how he came into his career, and also the broad strokes of his sources of income. Don't expect a spreadsheet of dollars and cents, but he does share his experience with the economics of doing work commissioned by publications vs. selling original drawings.
Full disclosure: I bought the pencil and pens he recommended and used them to draw a squid and an amphibian. About at the skill level of a third-grader. No real increase to my (very low) technical proficiency. But there is value, sometimes, in just being inspired to put your hand to something.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024I’m a big fan of Adrian Tomine and this book really helps to answer questions that I had for him. It covers the tools he uses and also the process of creating his work. He does something very important in my opinion, which is talk about how it is to be a parent and an artist. It is personal and really provides a glimpse behind the scenes. I feel like I went to an actual Q&A for him. Even though I’m in my forties, I still have aspirations of becoming an artist like Adrian. This book is great and makes the work he does realistic and understandable for anyone going through their own journey of discovery. I may or may not be creating a list of his supplies right now…
