Brandon Taylor is the author of the novel Real Life, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize, and named a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and a Science + Literature Selected Title by the National Book Foundation. His collection Filthy Animals, a national bestseller, was awarded The Story Prize and shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize.     This book was, for me, reminiscent of the structure of the novel Olive Kitteridge. It is an artful handoff of one character to the next, darting between the intimate connections of each personality, giving each person a chance to be in the spotlight; the protagonist. The writing is beautiful, thoughtful and evocative as it explores human dynamics in sexuality, trauma, race and artistic expression in a group of graduate students at Iowa State University and all they come in contacted with in their careers as students. This is a sexy post graduate coming of age tale that was a pleasurable thoughtful read.

    Reality Bites (the movie) type story about the modern grad school crowd. It felt jaded without the emotional heart to carry it. It felt like too many characters sketched too quickly for my taste.

    Having read Taylor’s previous novel, Real Life, and his short story collection, I was looking forward to The Late Americans and was far from disappointed. It is densely written and very light on plot which may dissuade readers who are not attuned to “difficult” literary styles. This is a novel that can be read best at the pace of poetry. The smallest actions, say, a momentary sexual attraction between roommates, has the feel of life, of things we may have experienced, but never analyzed. Taylor is a scientist of human biology and psychology, dissecting moments of interaction with grace and sympathy. If you want reassurance that great literature that will stand the test of time is still being produced, read The Late Americans.

    After reading rave reviews from NYT I was stoked to crack open this read, and sorely disappointed the more I read. The first section opens up with a scathing perspective on academia and the performances we compete with, and then slowly devolves into surface level character interactions that leave this initial promising plot behind. I have to agree with another reviewers critique of the novel seeming to branch off that may have served better as individual short stories rather than a uniform piece.

    Wow. This book was fantastic. It read like interconnected short stories, giving glimpses into each character’s life. I loved the setting in Iowa, dropped into a group of artists struggling with what they want out of life, their art, and their relationships. There were some really tender moments, and I enjoyed when previous characters showed up later in other characters’ perspectives. The writing was beautiful and I felt so empathetic to so many of the artists in this book.

    It took me a little bit to keep the characters straight in my head, but by the end they were clear. Also, there are some fairly graphic sex scenes and a few CWs, so check those.

    I am not sure why this was written or published. The characters are miserable most of the time and they are uninteresting. I finished reading it in hopes that I would find some redeeming value, but in vain.

    I had high expectations when I started reading this book and these were slightly disappointed. It's called a novel while in my view, it's more a collection of short stories in which some of the same characters return. There is no overarching story, the characters remain flat and some of the episodes are oddly not in tune with the overall scope. Taylor use of language shows that he is trying really hard to write a literature and that's a bit tiring. Unfortunately, this was an underwhelming read for me.

    Overall I enjoyed the book but I have two main criticisms. Firstly, the characters were not as clearly defined as I would have liked and this was made worse when they vanished for quite lengthy periods. Secondly, I was fascinated by the arguments in the poetry seminars and the total absence of guidance given to the students by their tutor (in marked contrast with what was happening in the dance classes). But that theme was dropped about halfway through the book. What happened to Seamus, the poet?

    The first chapter engaged me but after the second chapter the narrative got boring and hard to follow. Dropped it half way through. Novel well written but characters uniformly confused and nihilistic; very little dramatic tension.

    Though it started quite promisingly, it soon began to pall. Its “message “, such as it may be, is worked to death. By the end it becomes rather boring.
