Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do lockscreen ads work with Fire Max 11 Fingerprint ID feature?

Once you have enrolled in Fingerprint ID on the Fire Max 11 (we recommend enrolling both index fingers), you will be able to unlock your device by touching your finger to the power button. If you have a tablet that is ad-supported, unlocking it will bring up a lockscreen ad. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the home screen. Amazon Fire tablets use lockscreen ads to bring you lower prices. You can remove ads on your tablet by selecting the “without ads” box at the top of this page, or by going to Remove Ads from your Lockscreen page.

2. Do I need the Keyboard Case, Made for Amazon Stylus Pen, or Slim Cover?

No. While these accessories unlock new ways to use and benefit from your Fire Max 11, they are not required for day-to-day use. The Keyboard Case connects magnetically to the Fire Max 11. No setup is necessary and the keyboard does not require separate power or charging. As with all Fire tablets, you can connect Fire Max 11 to compatible accessories, like Bluetooth keyboards, mice, headphones and more. The Made for Amazon Stylus Pen uses the Universal Stylus Interface 2.0 (USI2.0). While any other USI2.0 stylus will work with the Fire Max 11, they may not have the same features available to them on the tablet, such as magnetic attachment or using the stylus button to erase. Like the Fire Max 11 Slim Cover, other covers may also work with magnetic attachment. If those covers have magnets in different places, it may interrupt some functionality of your Fire Max 11.

3. Where can I find out how to use the Keyboard Case shortcut keys, trackpad gestures, or features of the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen?

Tutorials and helpful references for both accessories can be found in the Settings app under Fire Tablet Accessories.

4. Are there eligibility limitations for the 3-month trial to Microsoft 365 Personal?

Yes. The 3-month trial offer is only available to new subscribers. It is not available to current subscribers or to customers who have had a M365 Personal subscription within the last year.

5. How do I sign up for the 3-month trial to Microsoft 365 Personal?

You can sign up for the trial through the Microsoft 365 (Office) app, available on the tablet or in the Amazon Appstore. The trial is also available on the Microsoft 365 (Office) app detail page on your Fire Max 11. You can cancel anytime and your subscription will expire at the end of that month. This is a limited time offer that is subject to change.

6. How does the 1-year limited warranty work?

When you purchase a new or Certified Refurbished Device, we warrant the Device against defects in materials and workmanship under ordinary consumer use for one year from the date of original retail purchase. If there is damage to the device such as a broken or cracked display, we urge you not to continue to use the device. Learn more at this link for full details.

7. Does the Fire Max 11 have a headphone jack?

No. The Fire Max 11 has a USB-C port. You can connect headphones via Bluetooth, a USB-C connector, or a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter.

8. Which micro-SD cards are compatible with Fire tablets?

When purchasing SD cards, make sure you are getting UHS, Class 10 or higher to support both internal and portable modes (class 4 or higher supports only portable). Some card formats, such as exFAT, are not supported on Fire tablets. You can re-format exFAT micro-SD cards to work with your Fire tablet, though this action will erase any existing data on the card.

To troubleshoot your card, see this help article.

9. What are lockscreen ads, and are they different from other ads or promotions on Fire tablets?

Fire tablets for adults come with lockscreen ads, also called “Kindle Special Offers,” to provide customers with the option of a lower price. These ads appear when you turn on or wake your tablet. To access your Home screen, just swipe the ad. The lockscreen ads can be removed for $15 at purchase, or at any time after you’ve set up your device. On Home and For You, you may see personalized product offers, recommendations, or sponsored content. In some apps, you may see ads for in-app purchases. Home screen content and app-based ads cannot be removed from Fire tablets.

To remove lockscreen ads, go to Manage Your Content and Devices and select your device. Under Special Offers, select Remove offers, then select End Offers and Pay the Fee. For more information, visit Unsubscribe from Special Offers.

***Notice: on March 6th, 2024 I have updated this review. I would append the original version, but combined with this would be too much text. If you wish to view the original version, I would suggest using the way-back machine found on the internet archive.***Preface:I have been using this tablet on-and-off for about 9 months as of the time of writing. I actually went and bought the (2023) Pixel Tablet, and installed LineageOS on it for a clean android experience, and even though not always mentioned, it is the basis of comparison for a lot of my complaints. Above all else however, it is important to note the price disparity, $230 for the Fire 11, versus $500 for the Pixel Tablet - To some less privileged, that might be enough to make it affordable whilst keeping food on the table.Chassis:Unlike any other Amazon tablet to date, this device is supported by an aluminum body, with only a single plastic insert near the top, where the speaker holes are. My only qualm is the camera bump - the rear facing camera has a bump, despite having the same resolution (8 megapixels) as the selfy camera which is flush under the screen's glass.Display and Sound:It's display is adequate, it's efficient and gets bright enough to do any task in nearly any lighting condition. The resolution however brings mixed feelings; I can notice slight aliasing (where smooth curves and angled lines can look like stairs, with distinct steps/layers) of icons on the homescreen, but not when reading books or viewing content. Since most content is produced in either 4k or 1080, increasing the resolution any higher would make the device more expensive and produce weird aliasing until you scaled the screen to 4k. Even the pixel tablet doesn't reach 4k, with a 2560x1600 screen and providing a smoother homescreen but aliasing for content if you look closely at it.Sound quality is surprisingly good. This isn't something that will rival a dedicated speaker, like an Echo or something from Bose, but I've enjoyed many a night laying in bed, watching YouTube and other content on it, without any concerns for the sound quality.Software:FireOS 8, based on android 11. It seemed palatable at launch, and it's going to be less so as the device ages, considering android 14 launched later in 2023. I'd be more mad about the version, except that there's been no interesting or really major changes in android since android 11, which has the side effect of allowing various apps an easier time maintaining compatibility.I would highly recommend anyone who's interested look up the Android Police's articles on installing the Google Play Store, it will make your experience a lot nicer (although I do note that sometimes the Google Play Store does not like it when you install SD cards, you may wish to get the 128GB model).Make no mistake however, I am thoroughly irritated at Amazon's update policy; They promise software updates and support for 4 years after the device is last available for purchase, which is industry-leading. This however does not include major OS version updates: My Fire HD 10 (2021), is still running FireOS 7, based on android 9, much to my annoyance. For a device this expensive, Amazon should be able to provide the same software support other vendors do, and update it to FireOS 9 whenever that comes out.The UI is simplistic, with a homescreen that an apple user would find familiar, but with the android controls that any lifelong android user would be able to navigate with ease. I wish Amazon would port gesture navigation, to bring the device up to parity with any Android and Apple phone released in the past 5 years, but I'm instead given 3-button navigation, which sometimes leads me to accidentally swipe backwards ineffectively.I did once complain that the Google Play Games login did not work on the device, but Amazon actually seems to have resolved that in an update released shortly after launch. I can now play Homeworld mobile, and have my progress saved across multiple devices.Performance:The processor is fast enough to not only navigate the UI, browse the web using Chrome, but even emulate some DS games (with Drastic), and play some dedicated android games. I still maintain that a device with 4GB of ram shouldn't be expected to run modern Android apps, but that's the price issue.Of slightly more annoyance, is the WiFi adapter: I've tested it and found it tops out at around 50-100 megabits per second, which is enough to stream content (1080p content is less than 5), which is weird since I have devices that adhere to the same WiFi 5 standard, that are able to download much faster. I can only presume that internally the WiFi adapter is either budget, or is connected to the processor via some really slow bus internally, like serial or something.Accessories:Amazon offers a stylus and keyboard folio. The stylus is rather interesting as Amazon includes handwriting to text conversion on the device, allowing you to write in any text box you want. I've used it a few times to take notes quickly before sending them to someone via Discord. It uses the rather rare AAAA battery, which is annoying to source replacements for, but I'd rather replace the battery than be stuck with an internal one like Apple does, since Apple's stylus will become a paperweight once the battery dies. The keyboard however is the star of the show - I love how it's folio is 2-piece, allowing me to remove the keyboard and toss it wherever if I don't need it, yet retain the (very stable) kickstand of it's backing piece. The feel of the keys themselves are meh, and I'm annoyed by the function key where the CRTL key should be, but it's not enough of a problem. It finds frequent use, allowing me to write messages on Discord, or handle other tasks without needing to bring my bulky laptop with me. The trackpad however, is useless - Android doesn't need it, and it feels a bit weird and rough.Features:This is the first tablet Amazon has released with a fingerprint sensor, and I'm honestly surprised by how reliable it is. Amazon's on-device messaging with the fingerprint sensor is also helpful (for example, it will inform you that it's been more than 72 hours since the PIN was last used, and for security reasons, forbid further fingerprint unlocks until you unlock it with the PIN at least once). It's extremely fast and seamless, immediately dropping me to the homescreen with a gentle tap of the sensor - I don't have to actually click the power button down.Desires:I understand wireless charging is an impossibility with the aluminum chassis, but I really wish Amazon released a charging/speaker dock for this thing. There's already pogo pins on the bottom for the keyboard, it wouldn't be hard to repurpose them for a dock, and it would encourage users to use it in the "show mode" that Amazon advertises this thing is capable of.I'd also really want major version updates. When FireOS 9 comes out, I want that on this device, not to be stuck on android 11 forever. This is Amazon's flagship, and it's powerful enough to handle it.Above all else however, I want Amazon to let me unlock the bootloader. I understand these devices are likely sold at a loss, so maybe let me buy an un-refundable unlock code for my device to make up the difference for Amazon, but let me do it.Conclusion:There's a lot of gaps where this device falls short, but it's basically unbeatable at this price range. If $500 seems insurmountable for your situation, or you want a disposable device to give a family member or child, you can't go wrong with this. My complaints whilst numerous, are not enough to drop it's rating from 5 stars in my eyes - it's still found a happy home with me.

    I come from a 2021 10 plus for reference.

This tablet has better graphics, brighter, sharper...hands down. It does everything the 10 plus did plus more and it is faster. The charging port is a PD C port. This means that I can plug in various flash or external drives (the fire has to format them and prepare them first to work with it so go in bare and let it do that). These drives can STILL be used with your regular computer too after that per usual. I made a flash drive of various things that I'd want during a power outage for that purpose as my fire is my go to device in that situation. The pen...oh my, the pen. I bought one when I got the Max 11. It is the best thing I've ever done and the reason I also bought an 11 and pen for my disabled son. Lets talk at some length about the pen being used with the tablet as that is a major upgrade.

It writes better on this tablet than any stylus I've ever used on any device. The palm rejection is GREAT..it only very rarely makes a small mistake. I tried every major stylus apps on my 11 (after sideloading the play store of course- if that ability goes away I will quit buying these as the provided app store is meager and pathetic- sorry amazon, it's true. It's super easy to do, google it and there are simple instructions to install 4 programs with links where to get them- very simple). The two that came out on top is Inkredible and Squid. Inkredible lets you buy what you want and need without having to get the whole thing. Brownie points there. I want fun and rich backgrounds to write on mostly for household notes. I have small papers all over with various notes I've taken and this will solve that mess. I tried doing it with adding a picture and sizing it over the provided area. That worked only somewhat ok. When I'd touch the stylus to make a dot for like the top of an i, it would stop writing and you had to fuss with it to get it to write again (that is a thing with the program and not the stylus). I figured out how to fix it though. I made the background what I wanted IN inkredible then exported it out of inkredible to a file as a .pdf (I sent it to my main computer), then I put the file back on the 11 and imported that pdf back into the inkredible and it was now an embedded background and it was fine, great...no more problems. They have writing enhancement in the inkredible that makes your writing still yours but cleaned up a touch to look nicer and smoother.

On Squid, they want a continuing payment to unlock things like importing. It works very well but they don't have the enhanced writing so how you write is what you get raw. I was going to pull the trigger until I figured out how to make inkredible work for the backgrounds, now I don't need to I don't think. Squid has pages for a large variety of uses and needs though- graphing, music and the like. If I end up needing something that inkredible doesn't provide me I'll do Squid for the cost.

The only thing I WISH I had on the 11 is the ability to mark over pages in the web browser and other programs that are similar. My HP laptop has that and it is fun and amazing to be able to markup stuff on webpages and save it as a screenshot essentially to send where you will. Other than that the stylus functioning is nearly perfect. I am SO jazzed, this is what I've been waiting for a very long time.

With the play store sideloaded this becomes a great tablet. I don't know how productive it is for business people but for the average user it is productive enough. This is my brain cell and my babysitter. I take it with me out and it keeps me entertained or working on stuff while I wait in waiting rooms. It keeps notes for me, now easier than ever as I don't have to hunt and peck on the keyboard popup, I just write it, and it looks good while doing it. It will now stand in for the tablet/s I keep on my desk for taking notes while on the phone AND I don't have to scramble looking for the recent notes when I have a need to refresh my memory as they will be saved right on my 11. My son needs to keep notes as well as a function of his disability. The thing is he is disorganized and never has ready paper and a writing instrument, but he lives life with a fire in his hand- literally he's almost never without it. I got him a case that holds the pen too and now at any moment he is ready to take a note and he's absolutely loving that.

Our 2021's were working fine, but because of the stylus capabilities I decided to try the Max 11 and I am so glad that I did. For us it is a major jump in enjoyment and productivity and disability mitigation. I think it is well worth upgrading to.

This is by far the best Fire Tablet since the HDX series, and my favorite. To put into context my love of the Fire Tablet, I’ve owned (or bought and returned) the following over the past 11 years:

    Fire 7 (2012/2014/2020),
    Fire HDX 7 (2014),
    Fire HD 8 (2018),
    Fire HD 8+ (2020/2022),
    Fire HD 10 (2018, 2019),
    Fire HD 10+ (2021),
    Fire Max 11 (2023).

Of those, the ones I kept or kept the longest was the Fire HDX 7, the Fire 7 (2014), and the Fire HD 10 (2018).

Specs for the Fire Max 11 can be found within the product description.

    Design and Build

The Max 11 boasts a sleek and modern design, coupled with a build quality that feels robust and premium. Its lightweight aluminum structure makes it convenient for both work and leisure, allowing easy handling and portability. I like that it went back to a similar size/ratio of the 2018 HD 10.

    Performance

Equipped with a more powerful processor than its predecessor, the Max 11 is capable of handling various tasks smoothly. Whether I am browsing the web, watching videos, or using multiple apps simultaneously, the experience is fluid and lag-free, especially compared to my HD 10.

While not ‘blazingly fast’, it IS much faster than I expected. Out of curiousity, I wound up trying it with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, and for the first time-I feel this is a possible viable laptop replacement for light to medium users. My HD 10 does not make a viable laptop replacement. Great multitasking ability, can run enough apps at once with little to no lag.

The speakers are merely adequate, if not a tad disappointing. Thought normally I either use ear buds or a bluetooth speaker. I don't miss having a head phone jack, and love having the quite responsive finger print sensor on the power button.

    Display

This has been probably my biggest surprise. The display is vibrant and crisp, offering excellent viewing angles. It renders colors accurately, making it a joy to use for both media consumption and reading. I do wish it was a TAD brighter at times, but the vibrancy of the colors makes up for it most of the time. I’d wondered how much of a viewing difference going from the 10 to the 11 would be, and it’s shockingly a pretty big difference. The Max 11 almost feels like a small tv, or laptop screen at times.

    Battery Life

Battery life has been good. It’s not the best nor the worst, and should be more than adequate for most users. Since I have chargers adjacent to most places I use the tablet in my house, I’ve also not needed to run it low.

    Value

One of the reasons I’ve had so many Fire tablets (I’ve owned only one other non Fire tablet, a 6th gen iPad mini that I use for my business) is that I love the value proposition and ease of use. Reviewers like to talk down the Fire software, but I have never minded it. I am admittedly deep into the Amazon ecosystem with movies, books, music, etc., so the operating system has always made it easy to access and use that stuff. I have also side loaded the Play store (I did this on my HD 10 also), so I have access to almost the entire Play store of apps on my Max 11. If one is really ambitious, you can essentially turn it into more an Android operating system. Personally, I have never like the tablet OS offered from iPad or Android tablets. When the Fire Max 11 was first announced, I was excited about the specs, but hesitant on the price. So I waited until Prime Day to buy it, also taking advantage of the trade in offer. In terms of what I paid ($229-$30 trade in gift card-$46 trade in 25% off-$80 prime day offer=$73.99), of course it’s an awesome value. At $229…I would suggest either going refurbished if available or just waiting it out for the inevitable discounts (at the time I write this, it’s on sale for $189.99). But I still think it’s a great tablet at $229, and wouldn’t fault anyone that pays that.

    Overall
In conclusion, the Fire Max 11 strikes a balance between aesthetics and functionality, offering a modern solution that should meet the needs of most while offering value and longevity. It might be a worthy addition to your tech arsenal, promising reliability and efficiency in daily use.

It is big. Exactly what I was looking for. I got this for school since I am going back to school at the end of this month. I also got the pen which works great together. My kids love it since it has the amazon kids + accounts. This will be a lifesaver with taking notes and writing essays etc. I guess im getting old because I was genuinely amazed at the Writing AI feature. The only issue I see is that you cant download any and all apps. it has to be Amazon approved I guess.

Good tablet for the price. I'd say it's most useful for watching videos, reading e books, or surfing the web. Can it play games? Sure. Most games don't play very well and you'll experiences framrate drops constantly. It's just not meant for games. Still a quality tablet when used in the correct applications
