The changing of the seasons from winter to spring is a most exciting time—especially sartorially. In with lighter layers, dresses, and a sense of freedom; out with heavy outerwear, knits, and boots. When it comes to the spring 2023 trends, there’s a lot to look forward to. As noted by Vogue Runway’s trend report, the collections reflected many moods: from soft and undone (read draped jersey, distressed fabrics, and other touchable textures) to utilitarian preparedness (think well-pocketed garments) and a streamlined minimalism (see smart tailoring and even smarter button-up shirting). Our editors have already begun to gravitate to a handful of these, eager to transition to the spring wardrobe.
Among these trends are a sense of practicality and an emphasis on a daily uniform. Two editors are bringing their maxi skirts and tailored vests into spring with a fresh perspective inspired by the shows, while others are looking for new ways to wear or repurpose those most cherished classics: denim or the white dress shirt, for example. Skirt Suits But Make it Fashion
My new obsession is the skirt suit. Earlier this year I got one from Theory—a little cropped jacket and a mini skirt in a navy cashmere wool and it suddenly awakened in me a desire to wear them all the time. They are harder to find than one might think—the proportions need to be exactly right so I don’t feel like I am playing dress-up. Everyday Preciousness
I loved the way sequined, embroidered, and embellished midi skirts were styled on the spring 2023 runways. Paired with standard tops you already have in your wardrobe—like button downs, tees, and tanks—designers posed the question: do you really need a special occasion as an excuse or reason to wear something beautiful? Or in my case, sparkling? This season, I’m pairing the precious with the everyday, using Commission’s shimmering silver midi skirt as a base with flat black loafers, a striped button down, and a boring gray sweater. I am always smitten with ladylike pieces, and few do that better than Giambattista Valli. For his spring collection, he sent out pieces down the runway which featured, yes, his signature bouclé tweeds but also pieces adorned with gold braided shoulder straps and gold piping. (Several other labels, from Pucci to Bevza, also embraced the same vibe.) The effect is one that feels Grecian but with a modern twist. What I’ve realized, however, is while I appreciate a lovely blouse or statement shirt, I am really a button-up shirt or plain T-shirt devotee. The transformed iterations of these classics and fresh ways to style simple shirting found in abundance in spring 2023 collections are all to my benefit. Luckily for me, I have Peter Do, Stella McCartney, and Bottega Veneta to look to for styling inspiration on how to reincorporate dress shirts with a sense of relevance for the spring season.
