- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2014This is a really handy little tool for using your iPad (or Kindle) on your lap. I've tried every kind of iPad cover that forms into a stand and none of them works as well as just having a separate stand, like the iRest.
It can easily fit a wide range of positions, depending upon how laid back or upright you want your device to be. There is a hinge at the top and the iPad holder portion slides forward (laying the iPad back more as you slide it forward) while the black rubber leg rest/table rest/counter rest slides back holding the iRest stable.
Your device just sits easily in an elevated lip behind the middle black part of the picture (just above the raindrop icon). The lip is wide enough to hold your iPad with every cover I've tried (the Apple Smart Cover, the Apple Smart Case and a few that purported to be able to hold the iPad up as a stand, which were thicker). There are no bands or clips to hold the iPad in place, just gravity. And that works fine.
As you can see in the picture, the two parts that touch the surface (your leg, counter, table, etc.) are covered by black lightweight rubber-like cylinders. The front cylinder is removable -- not sure why. And the back cylinders are separated in the middle by a 3-4" clear plastic cylinder that is the terminus of the back's sturdy clear plastic support.
I don't recommend this device for reading in bed. For reading in bed (unless you're sitting straight up), you want your iPad to lean toward you just a tad. And in all of the positions available on the iRest, the iPad is leaning away at least a little bit.
But anywhere you're sitting or standing it's perfect (reading on the couch or your easy chair, cooking in the kitchen, holding up the iPad in your workspace, etc.). Do note that the back cylinders extend 3.5" beyond the width of the iPad on either side, in case you're in cramped conditions.
It's a sturdy product that has given me several months of use with absolutely no signs of wear or weakness. I expect that it will last a good long time

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2014It elevates my iPad Air 3", which avoids neck strain from looking down (the main reason I bought it). In landscape, the screen on a naked iPad Air starts right at the top of the ledge, so my fingers hit the ledge when using the bottom line of the keyboard. That's not a problem with the Apple Smart Case I normally use, which raises the screen a little more. But only the back of the Smart Case fits into the stand, so the cover has to hang loose. It won't fit my Kindle Paperwhite in its Amazon case, as even the back of that case is too thick. It's very stable on a desk or table (how I mostly use it). The wide rear legs are pretty steady on my lap and the foam is comfortable, but sometimes the front roller starts to slip off. Also, only the ends of the front roller rest on my thighs (and I'm slim), so occasionally it slips at the front when I move. It's easy to adjust the angle, as there are no notches to engage, and it holds the position. It's pretty large for travel (the stand alone is 10.5 oz and about 6.5x8x1.25" folded, and the legs add 4.2 oz).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2019I rarely use my iPad while sitting at a desk or table; it’s primarily a lap product for me—on a patio chair, easy chair, the bed, the car, or even my recumbent bike. I also cook a lot, including on my YouTube channel (but I’ll resist the urge to plug the channel here), and frequently use it on the kitchen counters. In 2014 I conducted exhaustive research on stands that might accommodate how I work. The Rain Design iRest Lap Stand appeared to fill the bill.
After three and a half years of extensive real-world usage in all sorts of conditions, I am buying a second iRest. It has proven to be a solid, well-designed product that, quite simply, works—better than anything else I have seen.
That’s not to say the iRest can’t be improved. After about two years, the hinge loosened a bit. It still works, but if left open too wide near the edge of a countertop or night table, it slides open all the way and sometime tumbles to the floor. And there appears to be no way to tighten it. (Note to Ran Design: using Phillips or Allen heads on the hinge screws might solve this problem.) The second issue I’ve had is with the silicon pads on the face of the unit. One dislodged and wouldn’t stay attached no matter what adhesive I tried. But that doesn’t affect usage much, other than an occasional rattle.
These are not meant as complaints. My iRest has been used daily, several hours each day, for nearly three years. So, I’d expect some failures. And even after all this time, I wouldn’t need to replace if I could tighten the hinge.
Overall, the iRest is a super product, and has been a great investment. And that’s not just talk: I’m buying another one.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2011This is an ugly, awkward-looking piece of equipment. But it works astonishingly well. It lifts the iPad about 4 inches, and allows for an infinitely adjustable reading angle.
The only downside is that I have to take the iPad out of its case to use the iRest. The original iPad Apple case fits in but only if I don't fold the cover behind. So a back cover only "skin" might fit.
But I'm sitting here in my Lazy Boy typing this post, on my iPad which is sitting in the iRest, which is perched on my lap. Works fine. And it doesn't fall over when I shift my position.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2016The picture on the box shows a woman with her legs crossed. This stand works fine if you keep your legs together, otherwise it falls off your lap. It only holds your tablet if you do not have a cover on it. The black rubber things stay on, but start moving your legs, and they start to slip off. I doubt if men can use it, unless they sit with their knees touching each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing's brilliant
Beautifully crafted and so well thought out. My tablet doesn't quite fit into the tray because of the slightly thicker case but works just fine. It even has a built-in handle for carrying it around.

The best designed for user comfort, and with thoughtful features. Only I suggest is that the removable back support is a little loose and where you fix the iPad is a bit risky needs a better fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seit 2012 im Einsatz!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product that fulfills its purpose flawlessly
This stand was bought as a present to my mum for her first iPad and since receiving it, we've all had a go with the stand. It's great. Easy to use and very sturdy plus it folds away into quite small dimensions. It's a bit unusual to get used to it sitting on your lap, but for tabletops, it's the perfect height and angle for all users.
