About the Author
Five days a week Carla Hall bursts into your kitchens as the co-host of ABC’s talk show “The Chew.” Carla has never considered doing anything more than following her heart. From accountant to model to caterer to talk show host, life is a journey, and every wrong turn leads to a right.
After graduating college with an Accounting degree Carla moved to Europe to pursue a modeling career which ultimately led her to discovering her true calling as a chef.
While Carla didn’t start cooking professionally until she was well into her 20’s, her recipes reflect those classic dishes from her childhood growing up in Nashville, TN surrounded by soul food cooked from the heart. Her culinary philosophy is all about keeping it simple and flavorful. (“If you don’t know how to perfectly roast a chicken, that’s where you need to start in the kitchen.”)
Inside and out of the kitchen, Carla believes that you have to, “Say Yes! Adventure follows, then growth.”

I had purchased the cookbook because it was Carla's and I'm glad I did. Almost every recipe comes with a small story, every recipe looks so delicious, I love the pictures and everything looks so easy to cook. - Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2021In this cookbook, there are some really good recipes that modernize Black American cuisine. While many of the recipes seem a bit complicated for beginners, if you are comfortable in the kitchen you should be fine. I love how health-conscious Hall is. For someone like me, who LOVES African-American cuisine but is also a gym rat, this is a great addition to my cookbook collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2022Carla has hit the ball out of the park with this cookbook. It's like having your Grandma's favorite recipes written down in detail and kicked up a notch! The exotic seasonings she recommends make simple recipes gourmet. Comfort food made healthy. Quick and easy to cook during the weekdays. Thanks, Carla loved the stories that went along with the dishes. Loved hearing about the people you met and cooked with. And I really enjoyed you taking me with me on your travels through this book! Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020Wish I would have discovered it sooner! But perfect for my recent transition to a plant based diet. Just made the Seared Summer Squash w/ Sage; it is so delicious and perfect that I was moved to immediately create this review. Made the Mixed Greens w/Smoked Trout Pot Likker yesterday, what a cool and creative and yummily healthy twist on collards. Going to try the Black-Eyed Pea Hummus tomorrow. This is a special cookbook, it’s intelligent and creative with tons of intelligent and creative recipes. I need to also add that I greatly appreciate the concept of “celebration dishes” as dishes reserved for holidays, gatherings, and parties. So thankful for this cookbook.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2018Carla writes like a dream and cooks like a true southerner - yet elevated. I’ve already made 3 recipes from this book and I’ve had it one day.
These recipes are easy to follow, simple ingredients that you can get anywhere and yet they aren’t plain - these are special texture combinations with balanced flavors.
The other great thing about this book is that it has so much of Carla in it - it’s like she’s rooting for you to make a great meal and also to be the best cook that you can be.
Pure intent - it’s exactly what I needed today.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2020This is more than a cookbook- it's a love letter. The storytelling of the origins of the recipe's in the cookbook and how they've weaved in and out of Carla's life was magical. The book is set up in a way that makes creating a full menu for a simple dinner or a party very easy. The recipes themselves are delicious and easy to follow. This is already a cherished cookbook.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I love Carla. She is gorgeous and so talented.
For me her book I felt is more for a beginner cook. It’s very informative and lots of interesting recipes but for me I think I would have loved some more complex recipes.
Great book for chefs that aren’t as seasoned as I am.
