Should I clean my hair before coloring?
If hair has build-up, shampoo one day prior to coloring. Your scalp has natural oils that help protect it during coloring.
Can I use Natural Instincts if I get a perm?
If you plan to perm your hair, perm first, and then you can use Natural Instincts the very same day as long as your scalp is not irritated and is in good condition.
Can I use Natural Instincts with chemically treated hair?
If you plan to chemically relax your hair, relax your hair first, and then wait at least 7 days and one shampoo before coloring. To determine your color results, do a strand test. Perms, relaxers, and previous color can affect your color results.
What is semi-permanent hair color?
Semi-permanent hair color does not penetrate the hair shaft. Instead, it coats each strand with vibrant color that lasts 28 shampoos for beautiful color results without the commitment.

I ordered this and kept reading the instructions. Damp hair. Start at the roots. Cover the sink and have an old washcloth to wipe away the drips. Vaseline around the hairline. Nice big tube of conditioner. Gently start, this is for real now, no turning back. Roots kind of done, and then slathering everywhere. I worried for a moment that I wasn't do nice sections, pinning some up like a colorist would, but if you're slathering like the picture, it shouldn't matter.
I did drip, grrrr. I wiped it up from the floor, grateful I hadn't ruined it. Ten minutes, and leaping into the shower, hoping and hoping. Rinsing and then somehow splattering some of the dark water on the tile wall, Frantically wiping that off, easy, ok, I could have been more careful. Rinsing and counting to 200. Shampoo, sulfate free. My hair feels like plastic, oh no. I grabbed the conditioner tube and slathered, gently massaging it in. Five minutes, and silk soft in the shower. Rinsing it out, and of course I used way more than the suggested amount, so back to counting to 200 to rinse it out. Towel wrapped around my hair, and out of the shower.
I have a pink tangle free brush, easily brushing it out. Darkened by water, no idea what the color is. I pretend I don't care, walk my dog, send a few emails, and finally it's damp. I shake my air dried hair, all of it (my hair is wavy to curly, tends to frizz and is a bit past my bra line.
I'd been SO afraid of tonal dark hair, so dense and one color that light couldn't bounce off, no gradations. I'd only aluminum foiled a couple of highlights and shaking my hair again, I turned the harsh light on and it was lovely, it wasn't all one dense color but no brass, and so shiny, and soft.
It's really lovely and ten minutes, woot. That's kind of amazing. My colorist, whom I love but is too spendy, sets a timer for 35 minutes. This is fast and easy. The brassy sun-faded dry wretched color gone, this is a lush medium darkish brown but so natural. It doesn't look like that dyed way too dark color that's sort of dreadful.
This is sort of a love story.

They have done away with the color refresher packet-thank goodness for that-and the tube of conditioner is the bigger tube once again. Another thing I am grateful for. I absolutely love the conditioner and don't think I am alone in that sentiment.
I am almost 3/4 gray, as I started getting gray hair at 15 years old, and Natural Instincts covers all those pesky grays completely. I do leave it on my roots for about 25 minutes before working it through and adding the remaining color to my ends. Altogether I leave the dye on my hair for about 45 minutes before rinsing it off in the shower. I also shampoo after rinsing, although the directions don't include to do so. I then condition my hair, step out of shower and VIOLA...gray hair gone, and I have what appears to be my natural brown color. I have also had nice results mixing with Egyptian Plum (burgundy/brown..32, which is now color 4RV).
The box includes:
1 bottle colorant (55ml)
1 applicator bottle which has 55ml of activator inside of it.
1 tube of conditioner (55ml).
A sheet of directions with disposable gloves folded inside.
I have fairly coarse, long and wavy hair and the conditioner lasts me at least 4 washings. I only use about 1/4 of it the day I dye my hair and save the rest for when my hair seems to need some attention, which isn't frequent and I often use the same tube of conditioner by the time I am ready to dye my hair again. I only wash my hair about every three days so my color lasts over a month and is done partly to avoid having to start using a permanent dye. I find myself only coloring again once my hair grows enough to where I have what I jokingly call my "skunk strip".
I love that I can purchase three boxes at a time because I like having extra boxes on hand in case the mood to cover my "skunk stripe" strikes.
I am a long time fan of Natural Instincts and am happy that I still see great results even as my hair progressively gets more grays. I don't see myself changing brands anytime soon.
I don't know if this was an innocent error -badly handled, or a shoddy business practice, taking advantage of women who really like the older product.
The older product was faster and easier to use and did not stain anything but your hair- not clothes, or porcelain bathroom fixtures, or your skin. It left my hair with body and shine. The newer product takes longer, does not give the shine of the older one, and it stained my bathtub and sink, which are older fixtures and the tub was refinished. It might not stain newer fixtures but it stained mine.
Yuck!
