An introduction to Dá Licença

How would you describe Dá Licença in a nutshell?

Dá Licença is an almost monastic retreat in Portugal’s Alentejo region that’s set on a 300-acre former olive grove. We’ve transformed it into an Arts and Crafts-influenced guesthouse that offers breathtaking views across the surrounding eco-reserve.

What’s your background + what was your inspiration to open Dá Licença?

Vitor has spent many years working in the arts and fashion industries, including several years at Hermès. For the last 20 years, Franck ran an art gallery in Paris specialising in Scandinavian Jugendstil and anthroposophical design. Our combined backgrounds inspired the creation of Dá Licença and its evolution into the property seen today.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Dá Licença?

An elegant, authentic and timeless address where the entire team is focused on delivering a personalised service to make the guests feel at home.

And how would you describe the interior design/architecture?

The existing structures were transformed into a modern retreat featuring clean lines and discrete volumes, without effacing the traditional character of the estate. Its rural environment and the region’s cultural values were sublimed into a sophisticated way of living. Elements of anthroposophical design and Scandinavian Jugendstil reinforce the perception of the elements’ organic beauty.

To you personally, what is so special about Dá Licença?

The perfect symbiosis of nature and the beauty of crafts. The silence. It’s a surprisingly romantic environment.

Is Dá Licença best suited for couples, families, groups?

Dá Licença is a place for couples looking for a romantic escape. We are an adults-only guesthouse.

There are some excellent wineries not far from the property, as well as plenty of historic villages to explore. A highlight of the region is discovering its underground and surface marble quarries, as well as some of the marble monuments that feature in Estremoz and Vila Viçosa. You’re around 1.5 hours’ drive from the beach if you want a day at the coast and a little further from the capital, Lisbon. But I would recommend just enjoying Alentejo’s breathtaking landscapes and incredible sunsets.

The location of Dá Licença

Dá Licença is a 15-minute drive from the “White City” of Estremoz and around 40 minutes from the UNESCO-listed centre of Évora and Vila Viçosa. Lisbon Portela Airport is just under two hours from the property and Badajoz Airport in neighbouring Spain is an hour away.

This part of Alentejo still remains relatively untouched and hasn’t experienced the tourism development seen in other parts of Portugal.

When is the best time to visit Alentejo?

Spring through to fall is the best time to visit, with warm temperatures that are ideal for discovering everything the region has to offer.
