Off the beaten path, Marathon is a west Texas jewel in vast ranch country. I loved that my hotel room had no TV or phone (but the wifi was excellent) and I could totally unwind ... it's such a peaceful location. Loved the historic and quiet vibe of this little town.

Zero going on in town I mean zero no breakfast at gage hotel. No restraunts except for gage, expect to pay 125.00 minimum for 2 close to 200.00 if you have a few drinks. My drink was fair and 15 dollars. Bar menu starts at 3 p.m. 25.00 chicken fried steak, 20.00 nachos. That's it. Friday night the bbq place was open!!!!. Overall if money's no object and your not very picky about what you get for it GO FOR IT . Personally for 3 nights our bill was over a thousand dollars, it just wasn't worth the price period

Marathon, Texas is a small, artsy town along with a neat hotel (the Gage) on the main road. Don't miss Gage Garden (across the RR tracks to the left), a lovely, gated space with a short, windy trail to a gorgeous rose garden and through other plantings with creative features along the way.

I'd definitely stay in Marathon again for a trip to Big Bend. Although it is an hour/hour and a half away from the park, it is a unique and enchanting little town, and staying at the Gage beats camping or any nearby lodge any day.

An interesting town with an old west feel, while offering food, accommodations, and gardens that will delight city slickers! Nice town for walking in the evening in west Texas breeze. We liked the V6 cafe very much and the French Grocery for supplies. Try the oyster nachos at the Gage's restaurant; we loved our steaks and Mexican chocolate brownies too. I'm a birder and there are several locations to see great birds. We especially liked Post Park about 5 miles out of time. We stayed at the Gage, which we love, but there is also a good, friendly motel on the west end of town if you want something a little simplier -- it appeared in the great film "Paris, Texas."
