Albariño has come into its own relatively recently as modern equipment and practices have allowed producers to realise the full potential of this demanding grape variety. With its winery custom-built to fit inside the 17th-century palace in the Galician town of Cambados, Palacio de Fefiñanes was the first to bottle Albariño in 1928. Although the bodega owns only a tiny area of vines, its long-standing relationships with high-quality growers gives it access to some of the oldest vines in the Rías Baixas region. I have long been a fan of this historic estate's flagship wine, enjoying it on its own or as a match for fish and shellfish.
