Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries Paperback – October 15, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Weaving together personal narratives from athletes, scientific research, and the specialized clinical expertise of mental skills coach Carrie Jackson Cheadle, Rebound contains more than 45 Mental Skills and Drills athletes can use at every phase of their recovery process. These same strategies can help athletes who aren't currently injured reduce their vulnerability to injury and enable any individual to reach new heights within their sport and beyond.
Injuries affect every athlete, from the elite Olympian to the weekend racer. In the moment, a traumatic crash, a torn muscle, or a stress fracture can feel like the most devastating event possible. While some athletes are destroyed by the experience, others emerge from their recovery better, stronger, and more confident than ever.
Not everyone can recover swiftly enough to notch a winning performance in two weeks, of course. However, anyone can work toward a swifter, stronger comeback using mental skills, psychological tools that enable them to take control of their recovery and ultimately use the experience to their advantage. Injury and other setbacks are inevitable--but with training, you can learn to overcome them skillfully and confidently, the same way point guards and forwards practice rebounds.

Havey, author of Mindful Running

“Rebound is essential reading for any athlete that is injured or going through the physical rehabilitation process. This book is basically a psychological playbook about how to not only recover from the injury setback, but also to thrive during the process to come back stronger and better than before the injury took place. This book needs to be in every athletic trainer and physical therapist's office.” ―Joshua Lifrak, M.S., Director of Mental Skills Program for an MLB Team
“As a pro athlete who recently endured a devastating injury, and as a coach who has supported athletes through injuries and on the road back, I found Rebound to be a wealth of knowledge and resources. Rebound provides athletes of all levels with actionable tips and mental skills to guide them back to a healthy mindset while they rehab and recover. A must-read for the injured athlete, and highly recommended for coaches as well-I plan to utilize the mental drills in Rebound in my own coaching.” ―Kaitlin Gregg Goodman, pro runner for the Boston Athletic Association High Performance Team and adidas, coach at Training Joyfully

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019If you're an athlete for long enough, you're bound to get injured. This book was a timely release for me as I got a running overuse injury just weeks after purchasing it. I started reading it immediately. I found it really address many of my thoughts and feelings about being injured while giving me tips and tools on how to best cope with my injury. There are chapters about reconciling your identity as an athlete, how to cope with hard feelings, and how to best feed your inner athlete with good self-talk and habits. You can also find the aids in the exercises on their website.
There are several athlete testimonials about their injuries and how they bounced back that I found wonderfully encouraging. I also like the tools that the authors provide at the end of each chapter to help you identify where you are in your bouncing back process. Many of these techniques could be applied to any traumatic situation even if it is not sports related.
I think this book is a must have for every athlete as a resource for dealing with injury. The authors have a podcast where they interview athletes about their injuries and how they bounced back. They also have a great Facebook group where athletes can come and discuss and help each other during their injuries.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2022Great book! Carrie is a phenomenal communicator who is focused on actionability and practice for her reader. This book was helpful in my recovery from a traumatic knee injury as I really struggled with the mental side of losing my sport indefinitely. Not only has Carrie shared this book, she also hosts the Injured Athletes Club podcast which has been another valuable resource because I've been able to hear more athletes' stories about their own experiences. Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2020I was thrilled to receive this book as a gift (I have been a fan of Cindy Kuzma's work in Runner's World for quite some time!). It's an amazing resource for getting back in the game after injury or set back (whether in sports and/or life) and the personal stories of the athletes are incredibly moving and motivating. I have ordered an additional copy as a gift for a friend because I'm not letting mine out of my sight!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2023I got this book after injuring my ankle severely in a mountain bike race, upending my season and general life plans for the summer. I really think I benefited from the perspectives it shared, allowing me to shift my expectations and become ok with where I was at now. It also helped to give me the patience to let my injury heal properly.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2022Steps and strategies laid out in a clear way. Lets you know that your responses to being injured are totally normal and most athletes go through the similar things. The blog, workbook and online group are very helpful. Thanks.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025Not all that impressed. Definitely recommend reading it as a parent before handing off to your child if they are in high school. If you want more anxiety about your child’s injury….read it. If you want your child to have a ton of anxiety …please give it to them to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2020This is an excellent book for those who are recovering from injuries and may need to overcome mental hurdles as well. And good for those who may not be recovering but need the extra boost.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2020Fantastic book! As a mental skills coach I highly recommend this book for athletes recovering from injury in any and all sports. Excellent and accessible - a wonderful resource!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Também serve para quem não esta lesionado
Excelente livro para quem esta lesionado, ou para quem não esta lesionado, mas entende que recuperação de lesões faz parte do esporte.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is really helpful in feeling less alone/more hopeful
As an avid weightlifter and runner who has recently injured my knee to the point of being back to bodyweight rehab exercises, this has helped. I learnt about the book from the Injured Athletes club podcast by the same people. My mental health has seriously deteriorated with being unable to exercise, but when I read this I feel a bit sane and logical for a moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE book for when you are injured!
Whether you are an athlete or know one, you need to buy this book ready for an injury, or a gift to an injured runner!
I heard about it from a great podcast interview and immediately read it cover-to-cover, then went through it again with a marker pen and sticky notes and have dipped into it many times per week since.
The tone is universally supportive and practical. It acknowledges how much the situation sucks, and real things that you can work on to come through the situation. It does not fall into the trap of asserting that if you try hard enough there will be a fairytale ending, but gives real examples of what people have done.
I recommend this to everyone!
(And the Facebook community gives a practical day-to-day dose as well)

4.0 out of 5 stars Really useful book
More of a workbook and very much based on a cognitive-behavioural approach. The examples are excellent and bring the theory to life. Couldn't fault the basic principles.
