It has a nice firm mouse click actuation with the two top mouse buttons. That is what I prefer as I don't want to mis-click just from resting my fingers on the mouse buttons. Mine came with the braided cable and it's not stiff at all.
Coming from a G700s it's significantly lighter which takes some getting used to.
The #1 reason I purchased this mouse is because it has on-device settings that are easily changed and don't require me to install software. I can quickly set DPI, Polling frequency, Lift off distance etc without installing anything extra on my computer. It also uses optical switches for the primary mouse buttons.
I would have given Razor a shot, but I HATE their software and the fact that it auto-installs when you plug in one of their devices. This one does have a pop-up that asks if you want to install the software but you can just click No and go about your day.
Pros:
- Optical primary mouse button switches
- Simple side mouse buttons
- Good overall feel in my hands (I have slightly bigger hands)
- Ability to control just about everything from the mouse itself
Cons:
- No infinite-scroll wheel (may not be a con if you haven't had a logitech mouse with it)
- The scroll wheel click can be triggered by pressing the scroll wheel to the right (not sure if feature or just slop. Hasn't affected me in the least bit but could for someone else.)
The
-The mouse feet are just ok.
Other thoughts:
I turned off the lift-off detector. While it is good and works, unless you're using a flat mouse pad (like the plastic low-friction ones) this feature is hit and miss. I use a fabric one with a little cushion on the underside and there is a miniscule detent in the mouse area that the mouse will detect as lift off when I go across it. Turning the lift-off option off hasn't affected my gaming at all as I was already used to normal mouse lifting from the G700s. The mouse body quality seems avg. But when I messed with just about all of the mice at MicroCenter this was true of almost all of them. Short of going into the $139+ range where some of the mice would be textured with a rubberish coating. If you're a really sweaty player this might have an impact on you. It hasn't had any impact at all on me.
This review was done a few days after getting and using the mouse. I will update if any issues come up after a few months of daily use.
**** One month update ****
Well it's be a month of using this as my daily driver mouse for both work and gaming. About 12 hours a day of use 6 days a week. And my original review still holds the same. It's a great mouse. All the action buttons still work find. I've gotten used to the side button locations. The middle mouse(scroll wheel) click is still firm, but that doesn't bother me at all. I haven't had any miss-clicks or double clicks. I still haven't had any reason to install the software for this mouse. Being able to make adjustments from the menu on the bottom of the mouse is great.
DPI switching on device cannot be done without flipping it over since controls are on the bottom. Mousewheel is alright, but relies on mechanical tracking that is prone to failure and accuracy issues as it wears. Mousewheel click isn't too hard and responds well to input.
- Good sensor, feels accurate and responsive
- INCREDIBLE feeling optical switches for 1 and 2!
- USB Type-C charging port
- Good battery life
- Includes wireless adapter for the charging cable/dongle
- Pretty good stock feet (with tiger ices already available)
- Shape feels like a slightly less refined EC-2, but still alright
- Coating is good, but I wish it were a a little smoother (I think it would get more grip that way)
- Really solid feeling construction
Cons:
- Side buttons are tiny
- Scroll wheel is kind of hard to press consistently (but still scrolls well)
- Weight should go down at least 10g, I feel like ~70g would feel fantastic with this mouse
Thoughts:
Have you ever really wanted to use a product because of a single really, really good feature it has? For me, it's the optical switches on this mouse. No joke, these new optical switches feel so phenomenal, that I'm willing to put up with my gripes just to feel the clicks. Looking at their design on steelseries' website, they look like they should maintain their click feel forever, but only time will tell on that. If you don't know how they work, basically you press down on the button to actuate a spring that's held in place by a neodymium magnet that snaps down and breaks the laser beam to register a click. They do really feel light, but snappy.
The shape is very reminiscent of a Zowie EC-2, with the main difference being that the curves aren't quite as defined. It's not awful, but I think that those curves would have made a little bit of a better shape.
The coating for the body is okay, but I think it would have been more grippy if it were a little more fine. I always feel a little worried that the mouse is going to slip out of my hand. It sort of has a dry feeling to it if that makes any sense. The surface is vastly better than their rubberized sides in my opinion.
The side buttons are teeny tiny for no reason. They really should be at least twice the size and stick out a little more. I feel like I'm going out of my way to hit them compared to other mice. The scroll wheel also feels a little hard to consistently press, but I think it's something that could be gotten used to.
I think that with the combination of the slightly off EC-2 shape, dry feeling surface, and 80g weight, it can feel heavier than it is sometimes. I really think this mouse could have benefited greatly from being a little lighter. I imagine the wired versions feel pretty good, but I just love not slapping around a cable.
Conclusion:
Steelseries is finally moving in the right direction with their mice. They've always boasted about really gimmicky stuff as being some new revolutionary thing they've invented, but this time they're on to something with their OM switches. If these can feel as good from click 1 to click 100 million as they claim, then the design absolutely needs to be copied by other brands. As they feel right now, I actually prefer these optical switches to any mechanical switch I've tried. If this changes, I'll be sure to note approximately when they started to fade and under how much use. I don't think I'd say that this can 100% be the wireless EC-2 you're looking for, but it is a solid wireless ergo entry into the market.

I like it is light/accurate to control, and also the clicking sound.
