A collaboration between Eastern Algonquin powwow group Eastern Medicine Singers and experimental rock guitarist/producer Yonatan Gat, Medicine Singers fuses avant-jazz, edgy post-punk, and electronic sounds with powwow drums and singing. This uncommon combination grew from a spontaneous group performance into an avant-garde super group of sorts, with key figures in experimental jazz, ambient, and other fringe genres making contributions to the project's self-titled 2022 debut full length.
The genesis for Medicine Singers' formation happened at 2017's South by Southwest music festival, when Gat was in the crowd excitedly taking in a performance from Eastern Medicine Singers. After their set, Gat asked group leader Daryl Black Eagle Jamieson if they would join him during his performance, and their collaboration there eventually led to recording an album together. As the project gained momentum, players like trumpeter Jaimie Branch, ambient pioneer Laraaji, Swans members Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica, and several others entered the fold, all adding to the genre-bending sounds that made up Medicine Singers, the project's debut album. Medicine Singers was released in September of 2022 on the Stone Tapes label in conjunction with Joyful Noise. ~ Fred Thomas
