Best Blog Editor, Could Still be Better! :)

Support for publishing to Wordpress is excellent, especially the support for inline images. Because of this and its sync to iOS/iPadOS/macOS, it’s currently my preferred blog editor, despite a few shortcomings for blogging e.g.: No import of existing articles, long-winded workflow to update an existing article, no image resizing. Overall a great app, with excellent support.

I had an issue where I had to hard-reset my iPhone to fix it, fortunately that did work, so I updated my review. Thanks for the quick support Ulysses team!

Previous 2 star review: On iOS this app suddenly changes to a different sheet for no apparent reason. This kills flow completely and makes the app unusable. The macOS version does not have this problem. Other than this fatal flaw it seems great. Please fix the bug! :)

We are terribly sorry about the trouble you are experiencing. This is obviously not supposed to happen. Could you please contact us via help@ulysses.app so we can have a closer look at this issue? Thanks —Andrea

Easy to organise sections

I like this because I can organise each segment or chapter into the right order using the document map and pre-viewer on the left. It's a form of document mapping - which to my knowledge Pages for some reason is still missing. What I have never grasped yet is why anyone would ever want to write in mark up at all as I find it irritating not knowing how it will look. It's just as easy or easier to write in Pages where you set your heading styles. If Ulysses have the option of just seeing what you want it would be an advance. As would a document map in Pages. I've managed to organise 30 years of writing in a month so this app does have huge benefits in terms of collation and ordering but I find myself strangely disconnected from my work because it doesn't look how I want it to. Why they don’t take this another stage and have an icon you press for heading or centre or left justify, that then puts in the markdown for you, I have no idea. Would that not be a no brainer?

Developer Response ,

Thank you for leaving a review! Our markup-based writing environment can take some time to get used to, especially if you only worked with WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) programs like Pages or Word before. Ulysses is a WYGIWYM (What You Get Is What You Mean) editor. The app uses the Markdown XL markup language, which allows you to tag text semantically. Ulysses will then automatically format the final document for you during export—so that you can concentrate on the most important part: writing. Anyone who has ever tried to format a long document in Word knows how much time can be lost. Especially, when an image or footnote needs to be added afterwards. As soon as you know all the tags you need for your writing style, your fingers need never leave the keyboard while you type. And when your text is ready for publication, all you need to do is select a style sheet. If you don't like the look, select a different one. Your text will always look perfect. Furthermore, each export style can be tweaked to fit your individual needs. If you have any questions or need help in learning Markdown XL or how to adjust style sheets feel free to contact us directly at help@ulysses.app —Andrea

A great way to start

I am a strategist for a large corporation. Much of my time is spent writing vision statements ahd strategy documents, sometimes for myself but often as a ghost writter for executives.

I start all my documents in Ulysses. Depending on the document I set my self a Word count target and then build an outline and finally flesh out the content.

I lvoe the focus on words and not presentation. I love the speed at which it reacts to my typing. I like the new grammar checker although I would prefer if it aligned better to that of Word.

Microsoft Word is now simply a publishing tool.

The link between Ulysses and Word does work as well as I would like. I publish with the expectation that the template I use in Word will define look and feel, but that does not happen. I don’t seem to be able to direct my document via a specific template and even with the normal template, it overrides the default formatting.

This means that I have to adjust formatting once it arrives and that just wastes time. Furthermore, I would like to go back to Ulysses to adjust and re-publish, but having to do the formatting again stops me.

Consequently Ulysses is a great start, but not so great an end (for me)

Developer Response ,

Thank you very much for your review and for taking the time to write it — we highly appreciate it. We are sorry to hear about the trouble you have with exporting to .docx. Perhaps you would benefit from creating a personalized export style, where you can set all your formatting preferences? This way you wouldn't need to rely on a Word template anymore. You can find more information about this on the following page, including a link to an even more detailed guide: https://ulys.app/styles. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please don't hesitate to let us know: help@ulysses.app. —Max
