In 2017, we wrote about Airbnb's new acquisition, Luxury Retreats, a high-end mansion, villa, and penthouse rental company that would eventually turn into Airbnb Luxe. Two years later, the luxury extension of Airbnb's home offerings officially launched, now offering tons of over-the-top villas in at least 35 destinations, all of which come with their own trip designer, or travel specialist.

You can find an 11th-century castle in the Tuscan countryside (from $16,622 per night), a jaw-dropping eight-bedroom ultra-modern chalet in the French Alps (from $25,019 per night), and a Balinese-inspired cliffside villa overlooking the ocean on Mustique (from $13,393 per night) among Airbnb Luxe's lineup. But not every Airbnb Luxe will break the bank, as there are luxurious homes as low as $400 per night spread across the world.

No matter what you're paying per night, a trip designer is included in your home's rate, so you can use their help in booking other parts of your trip as much or as little as you'd like. Want someone to pick you up from the airport? Done. Need childcare? They can do that, too. Want a chef? How about a butler? Or even just a fully stocked fridge with fresh groceries when you arrive? Yes, yes, and yes. You'll have to pay for the additional services, of course, but Airbnb isn't levying fees for organizing these extras: “The cost of the groceries is the cost of the groceries, the cost of renting a catamaran is the cost of the catamaran,” Nick Guezen, Airbnb's global director of portfolio strategy, told us in 2019. And in some homes, things like chefs, childcare, and more are included—luxury amenities are split on each listings page into “included” and “add-on,” so you know what you're getting with each villa.

How over the top can you go? In the preview stages of Airbnb Luxe, a trip designer worked with a local contractor in Los Cabos, Mexico, to build a basketball court on the sand outside a beachside villa for an NBA player traveling with his family and friends, Keith Monaghan, the company's global head of trip design said. (So, to answer our question, really over the top.)

Over the years, Airbnb has been upping its luxury levels, first offering private rooms in hosts' homes and entire apartments under its regular Airbnbs, and then launching Airbnb Plus in 2018, which added personally inspected homes that meet a 100-point checklist for amenities and design. Luxe takes Plus's inspections up a notch, with a 300-point amenities checklist and an additional layer of design inspection. In-person inspectors check everything from shower water pressure and linen quality to air conditioning functionality. “When we first walk in, all of AC gets turned on for the entire tour, to make sure that not only is it working but it's not making any noise and is fully cooling the rooms,” Guezen said. On the design front, Airbnb's design team ensures that the furnishings and decor are high-quality and in good condition—and that there's plenty of space for everyone. That means that no more than two bedrooms share a bath, and that if the house sleeps 10, it can also fit 10 travelers at the dining table, around the couch, or spread out in the backyard.

In theory, Airbnb Luxe will bring in travelers who wouldn't have considered the home-sharing platform's more basic options before—the company's B&Bs and boutique hotels help, too. But it's also intended to elevate existing users' experiences, according to Guezen and Monaghan, and leverage their familiarity with Airbnb. “Our users are growing up. Someone who was sharing homes for under $100 a night when they started with Airbnb is now booking places that are $1,000 a night,” Guezen said. Looks like some Airbnb users have gotten some nice promotions over the years.

Here are a few of our favorite Airbnb Luxe options to book now or pine over for a future vacation:

Sundown, Jackson, Wyoming

This character-filled cabin sits just outside of Jackson, about 20 minutes from Grand Teton National Park and about 1.5 hours from Yellowstone. And while the surrounding breathtaking nature and winter slopes in Teton Village are the draws here, this home offers plenty of reasons to stay in. The spacious living and dining area gives you well-designed space to gather with friends and family, while the three bedrooms give you options for sleeping arrangements. There are two king rooms (one of which can be turned into two twins) and a bunk room for kids. A movie room will be an instant hit for evenings in, too.

Villa Les Capitaines, Gordes, France

Escape to this six-bedroom, five-bathroom hillside retreat, with its luxurious private pool, rustic fireplaces, indoor-outdoor living areas, and petite library. There are stunning views of the surrounding Provence countryside from nearly every room, and while the home feels incredibly private, it's within a short drive of the area's best quaint towns. Housekeeping is included in your stay and you can organize grocery pre-stocking, airport transfers, and excursions around the south of France through the trip designer.

Casa Nalum, Tulum, Mexico

This beachfront villa about 40 minutes outside of Tulum is absolutely stunning, with a private pool, sandy lounge areas, indoor-outdoor bathrooms, a partially covered rooftop, and enormous interior living areas, thanks to the raised, palapa-style thatched roof. The home comes with a villa manager, housekeeper, and gardener, plus dry cleaning service—and it'll be stocked with basic cooking ingredients before you arrive. If you're not looking to spend your vacation in the (albeit very nice) kitchen, coordinate chef service and airport transfers with your trip designer.

Ezzahra Estate, Marrakech, Morocco

Located about 15 minutes outside of Marrakech, this five-acre estate is actually made up of three separate villas, which between them have a whopping 13 bedrooms. The per-night price may be hefty, but a stay here comes with a staff of 17, which includes a chef, housekeepers, a chauffeur for any trips to and from Marrakech, and masseuses for spa treatments in the hammam. Plus, meals here are included in the price (and are best enjoyed on the estate's indoor-outdoor terraces). You'll also have access to the estate's three swimming pools, tennis courts, and, according to the listing, parasols.

Villa Mendia, Telluride, Colorado

One of our favorite Airbnbs in Colorado, this Basque-inspired home features stunning stone walls, striking high ceilings, four fireplaces, and sun-filled interiors. Set about six miles from town and the slopes, it's secluded and has tons of space for fellow guests to spread out, between the private sauna, two living rooms, dining room, and outdoor patios. Be sure to chat with your trip designer about ski and hiking gear rentals, depending on what season you're visiting.

Chalet Maurice, Zermatt, Switzerland

We could write paragraphs on the views of the Matterhorn from this chalet—and even more on the light, wood-clad interiors that bring a Nordic vibe to the home. With room for 12 among its six bedrooms, the rental also comes with its own sauna, hot tub, chef, and multiple fireplaces for maximum winter coziness. There's also a ski room with heated boot racks—and you can organize equipment fittings and daily preparation for skiing through your trip designer. But what we really want to talk about is the private funicular that brings you up to your cliffside villa.

Hillcrest, Los Angeles, California

Live out your old Hollywood fantasy in this 1930s Beverly Hills mansion, complete with two kitchens, four family rooms, and six bedrooms (you'll find us in the enormous suite or the second story bedroom with a forest green-tiled bathroom). Inside, there's also a music records room, library, and movie theater, complete with a stage and instruments for a DIY band performance. Outside, there's even more: A stay here comes with a large pool and loungers, sculpture garden, tennis court, and skateboard ramp. You'll have to add on any staff you'd like (think chef, chauffeur, etc.) with your trip designer, but we think you'll manage just fine at this ultra-private retreat on your own.

The Lodge at the Hills, Arrowtown, New Zealand

There's no need to drive 20 minutes from the South Island's Queenstown to this six-bedroom lodge—you can just land on the helicopter pad. Ultra-modern in construction, this architectural wonder features sweeping views from its floor-to-ceiling windows, wall-to-wall fireplaces, peaked-ceilings, and modern art installations inside. Outside, though, there's plenty more to explore, from the multi-level infinity pool, tennis court, oversized-sculpture garden, and private golf hole. (If you want more golf, the house is directly next to the Arrowtown Golf Club.) Oh, and there's also a chef included.

Villa Il Sogno, Positano, Italy

The aptly named Villa Il Sogno is an ivy-covered, cliffside dream. With views of Positano from its multiple outdoor terraces, waterfront deck, and many of its five bedrooms, you could spend days here just enjoying the salt, sun, and colors of the Amalfi Coast outside. You can even go so far as to work out with views of the Mediterranean, thanks to an elliptical and rowing machine tucked into a cave in the cliffside. The interiors are gorgeous too, with a rustic, fully-equipped kitchen, multiple livings rooms, and bright, airy bedrooms. While staff isn't included full-time during your stay, you can organize breakfast and lunch, porters to bring your luggage to the house, and housekeeping through Airbnb Luxe.
