The sliding closure collects some of whatever you are drinking. Depending what it is that can dry out and leave a crusty deposit. In other mugs this is hard to get at and clean. In these you just pop the sliding part out, wash the part and the channel, and snap it back together. Today the coffee is still drinkable after five hours. So I'd say the insulation is good enough. I have been using one of these for a year and my wife finally decided she wanted one too. So with all the options on the market, after searching for a better desk mug, this is what we got. Still the right answer.
