Salad Freak: Recipes to Feed a Healthy Obsession Hardcover – March 29, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
A USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller, Salad Freak features delicious and beautiful recipes from Martha Stewart’s personal salad chef and the self-proclaimed “Bob Ross of salads.”
Foreword by Martha Stewart
Offering more than 100 inspired recipes, recipe developer and food stylist Jess Damuck shares her passion for making truly delicious salads. Salad Freak encourages readers to discover and embrace their own salad obsessions. With the right recipes, you will want to eat salad for every meal and never get bored.
By playfully combining color, texture, shape, and, of course, flavor, Damuck demonstrates how a little extra effort in the kitchen can be meditative, delicious, and fun. The recipes—such as her Citrus Breakfast Salad; Tea-Smoked Chicken and Bitter Greens Salad; Caesar Salad Pizza Salad; and Roasted Grapes, Ricotta, Croutons, and Endive Salad—are meant to be hearty enough for a meal all year round but versatile enough to be incorporated into a larger menu.
For Damuck, the perfect salad balances each bite, with something tart enough to twinge your cheeks, something sweet to balance out the bitter, and something with a little salty crunch to finish. Salad Freak is not just about eating to feel good; it’s about confidently combining flavors to create fresh, bright, and satisfying meals that you will want to make again and again.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Damuck has reclaimed salads for those of us who have given up counting calories and calculating macros and instead just want to delight in the fresh colors and flavors every season offers.”―Paste Magazine
“In a quirky book, she shares her “healthy obsession” with how to mix-and-match flavors, colors and textures so well that you could eat salad for three meals a day and never get bored. That’s an intriguing concept for those of us short on time and stuck in a food rut. While most of us are not so fortunate as Stewart to have a personal salad chef, we can still eat like we do.”―TIME
“I love that Damuck offers more than just recipes; the book includes her tips on washing and storing greens, a list of what to keep on hand for future salads, and even her Spotify playlist of music to make salads by. I'll be crunching along all spring and summer with this book.”―Food & Wine
“Jess Damuck, a food stylist and recipe developer, is out to change our perception of salad. Her new cookbook, Salad Freak: Recipes to Feed a Healthy Obsession, is all about, as she writes in the introduction, salad becoming “something of its own art form.” She explains that, in many ways, anything can be a salad. There are recipes to make a salad for any meal of the day, as something to accompany other dishes, or to be the main event—and even some that are sort of secret salads, like Caesar Salad Pizza, Yellow Gazpacho, and Carrot Saffron Socca.”―Food52
“In her first cookbook, our friend tosses salads together in a whole new way: They're irresistible, exciting, and delicious any time of day.”―Martha Stewart Living
“The book fittingly has an intro from Stewart herself, advises home cooks on the best salad essentials to keep in their pantry, and provides recipes for hearty and unique produce combinations that firmly cement salad as a main dish rather than a side.”―Thrillist

So Many Amazing Salads & Delicious Dressings

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024I love salads so have a half dozen books on the subject. While each book presents several recipes which I use over and over, mostly seem unimaginative, contain many salads using meat (I'm vegetarian), or combine odd ingredients just to be different. This book is a game changer. It is the result of the author's passion for salad. She offers a new, colorful, and doable way of combining salad ingredients. Having worked with Martha Stewart, she is aware that the appearance of the dish enhances its flavor. Each salad is pictured on a full page next to the recipe. The recipe is prefaced by a description as to what makes the salad special. The opening pages of the book introduce the reader to important tools and techniques. She then divides the recipes into the four seasons. She even includes suggestions about music for salad-making.
In my opinion, the book title "Salad Freak" is misleading, suggesting that the author may present "way out" suggestions. While her recipes are certainly innovative, they, nevertheless have appeal for even the most traditional cook.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024I love salad, but I get so tired of boring green salads. My favorite type of salad has to have all kinds of tiny delicious bites. Everything in this little cookbook so far has met that standard.
I just bought this on a Kindle Deal and I'm going to go back and get the full paper version for ease of use, because there are already a dozen salads that I want to try. I'm an experienced cook and I can already tell that the flavor combinations are inspired and delicious. The first salad I made was the Crisy Chicken, Gingery Cabbage, Mandarins and Almonds. I picked that one because I had all the ingredients available in my fridge waiting to liquify (as salad fixin's are wont to do...) I did NOT make the chicken, but the salad itself was *divine* and made enough for three full meals with generous amounts of dressing.
ETA: I made the Chili Crisp today and it is the most AMAZING condiment I’ve ever made. I cannot recommend it enough. The garlic and shallot slices turn caramelized in the frying process and remain crispy in the oil. It’s really spicy but with the tiny bit of honey and spice in the recipe it’s crazy good.
Difficult to find ingredients?? Substitute! The point is to get more flavorful greens into our lives and these salads are both beautiful and flavorful. FYI... the recommended 'O Olive Oils & Vinegars' brand are available from Target and Amazon.
I highly recommend snapping up this gem and leafing through. You won't be disappointed!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2024This cookbook has a lot of great salad ideas, the pictures are beautiful and the instructions have been easy to follow this far. I really like the mandarin orange salad. My only complaint is that most recipes have ingredients not typically found in a standard pantry so my grocery bill has gone up.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024I bought this for a gift but liked it so much that I kept it. Then I bought a 2nd copy for a different gift. Everytime I see my friend she tells me about another recipe she tried. Recipes are creative but easy to follow. Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023I eat salad every day, so I think my game is strong. I've made a couple dozen salads out of this book and all have been good or even excellent. In particular I've picked up a few ideas that have been reusable like shredding brussels sprouts in the food processor. One of my guests said it was the best salad he'd ever had and it was just roasted garlic vinnagrette and brussels sprouts. Another salad that was memorable was the miso mushroom salad - umami bomb!
This author likes chonky salad ingredients that are pretty, but hard to eat, so I cut my ingredients smaller.
Also there are a lot of hard-to-find ingredients, even in a major metro area (Seattle), so you will need to up your substitution game or make things from scratch. One last thing: love the pictures of every salad.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2024i like this book because it teaches how to use produce in wide variety and appreciate produce in its true essence. however some of the recipes aren’t really recipes more then they are an idea of putting two veggies together in a bowl and eating it. they’re very basic, but i think that’s the point. i do like the book but dont see myself using it on a weekly basis.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2022I have made about a dozen of the recipes so far and every one of them is either good, very good or excellent. I'm totally addicted to the mandarin and burrata salad on the cover - YUM! Also the steak salad with horseradish dressing is amazing. Most recipes are very easy, don't require a lot of ingredients and can be made very quickly. If you have some olive oil, lemons, limes, and veggies, you can make a lot of the recipes in the book. Many have very simple dressings, or even no dressing at all. Those with dressings are very easy and quick, and delicious. I will never buy store bought salad dressing again. BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it! I use mine every single day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good information on how to care for your lettuces once you get them home.
I was really interested in how to wash and store the various lettuces and how to make more interesting salads. They don't need to be incredibly exotic but her recipes are terrific. If really good salads are your interest this is your book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures and a salad-making playlist
A plethora of inspiring salad ideas it is not and I am not sure how this made the bestseller lists. Between the prose there are some recipes for salads, some of them as basic as 'take 3 types of melon, cut with melon baller, mix' or 'cut, mix, top with your favourite seasoning' And some not salads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but a bit complicated
Great recipes but some of the ingredients are a bit hard to get so haven’t made many of the salads
