In H. B. Akumiah's lively and charming debut, three young women discover the unbelievable: they're witches, and their new-found magic may be the key to saving the world ...
The Witch Sphere is in turmoil. In the years since a stunning betrayal sent shockwaves through society, the Sphere was hit with a crisis: witches are giving birth to more typics (non-witches) and their numbers are diminishing. Nadia is determined to help but finds her efforts at the Witch Health Organization entangled with the political machinations of her powerful mother.
A public relations assistant, a teacher, and a former child star walk into a bar bathroom ... On what happens to be all of their twenty-second birthday and, like many twentysomethings, become fast tipsy friends. But unlike most twentysomethings, their night of partying ends with an accidental act of magic. Suddenly, Maya, Gabbie, and Delali find themselves thrust into a world of spells and potions with only a mysterious mentor as a guide.
As the girls learn to harness their new power, Nadia starts to notice spikes in the magic baseline and suspects an unknown cadre of witches may be the key to solving the Typic Crisis. Can this unlikely coven come together and save the Sphere or are there darker forces at play? Either way these Bad Witches are going to find a way to have some fun.

Review
"Wit, grit, and glamor reign in Bad Witches. All the rhinestoned thrills of nineties TV friendship dramas doused in Dirty Shirleys and lit on fire. I tore through it in one sitting. This debut is such a delight!"
-- "August Clarke, award-nominated author of the Scapegracers trilogy and Metal from Heaven""Girls who behave rarely make history, so it's a good thing Akumiah's witches are the kind you'd love to gossip with at a party over drinks. A witty, perfectly mixed cocktail full of twists, turns, and fantastical intrigue. Perfect for anyone who wants to read about New York halcyon days without teetering into excess. Immense fun."
-- "Grace Byron, contributor for Vogue and elsewhere""H. B. Akumiah's Bad Witches is Charmed meets Sex and the City meets The City We Became, and I'm here for all the fun, smart, stylish, magical joy of it."
-- "Addie Citchens, writer for the New Yorker and the Paris Review""[A] sweet urban fantasy debut...One part fantasy and one part celebration of sisterhood, this is a loving paean to all that can be accomplished when women pool their experience and power."
-- "Publishers Weekly""I loved everything about Bad Witches. I wish I could cast a spell to go back and read it again for the first time. I can't remember the last time a book was so unique, exciting, well executed, and funny at the same time. With a rich and incredibly crafted story, characters I cannot wait to meet again, and an ending that left me desperate for more, I know this is the beginning of not only an absolutely stellar series, but a truly thriving career for an exceptional writer. Bad Witches is phenomenal!"

- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2024I did the audiobook and it was a good listen. The narrator did a great job with all the different characters, and it is a lot. I would describe this read as a 2024 black Charmed with friends. They are 3 completely different personalities that normally wouldn't work together but with this experience it does. Love this twist at the end with Alba. One caution is the book world building is a lot so you have to pay attention. My only gripe is there is continuation that is not directly displayed. I'll plan on reading the next installation because I'm invested.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025For a first time book, this was great! Sometimes the transitions were hard to follow, but since I’m a baby boomer so that could be a generations thing.
I love the concept and am eagerly awaiting the next installment. Hurry up!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2024This was a fun urban fantasy. It was told from multiple POVs (five I think?). However, the author did a great job keeping the voices of the three main characters unique and easy to tell apart. I enjoyed how well they worked together and individually, and it definitely elevated the experience to have them all be relatable. They had good depth, and there was great diversity for the MCs. I could tell that the author put a lot of work into writing strong characters. The intrigue relating to the birth crisis in the Witch Sphere was also quite interesting.
Something that I didn’t prefer was how often too much information was included. This happened when the handbook/textbook was discussed, and another instance was when the author listed many, many names that didn’t seem to be relevant to know. It also happened in relation to makeup. It definitely got worse as the work went on and since I was listening to the audiobook version it wasn’t possible to skim these parts. I also wish that the plot had been a little less haphazard – it was often difficult to follow, and I just had to sit back and trust that the things happening were happening for a reason (they didn’t always, but that’s fine).
Read this if you’re looking for an easy-to-read and humorous urban fantasy that’s got good characters, a weaker plot, and ends with a cliffhanger. My thanks to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for allowing me to read this work. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2024This is seriously one of the most fun books I've read in a while. The mix of magic, mystery, and the hilarious, genuine friendship between Maya, Gabbie, and Delali kept me turning pages nonstop—I loved how it felt like a mix of growing up and saving the world all at once. Definitely give this book a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2024In this debut novel, we follow four different characters: Mya, Gabbie, and Delali, who are living in the non-magical world as ordinary people in New York City and Brooklyn. On their 22nd birthday, which coincidentally falls on the same day, they happen to meet each other in a bar, and their magic awakens. After experiencing a series of chaotic events, the three join together and find a mentor who teaches them about their magic. Meanwhile, in the magical world known as the Sphere, Nadia is working with the W.H.O. to solve the crisis of “typic,” where witch babies are being born without powers. Suddenly, everything starts to change. As these four navigate their respective worlds and the transformations within them, sinister events begin to unfold.
Initially, I planned to rate this book much lower because, let’s be honest, much of it moves like a snail in molasses. There are entire passages filled with unnecessary details, like textbooks and menus, that do not contribute to the storyline. Additionally, the story follows four characters within a limited timeframe. However, when I reached the last quarter of the book, I realized this was the beginning of a series. The focus on world-building and backstories became clearer, prompting a shift in my understanding. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any indication of a series in the descriptions, but the writing and the ending certainly imply that this is the first of many, possibly even a trilogy.
While recognizing that this is part of a series doesn’t change the slow pacing, it does shift my appreciation for the book. We are constructing an intricate magic system across two different realities, and it’s fascinating to see three young women discover this world while building relationships among themselves. I hope that when we move on to the second book, there will be a strong bond established, allowing the story to start with momentum.
I appreciated the depiction of sisterhood among these women as they spent time together while managing their own lives. I enjoyed witnessing their evolving relationships and building confidence. The magic system itself is intriguing, sharing both similarities and differences with typical witch magic in fantasy literature. The pacing could have been improved, and better editing to eliminate unnecessary text would have greatly enhanced the reading experience. Overall, the book is entertaining, and the last quarter shifts the tone and expectations. This is a solid debut, and the narrator, Imani, is exceptional at her craft.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2024Smart, funny, feminist and delicious! I was hooked from the first few pages. Very witchy with a whole witch world and witch hierarchy.... Really fun and serious and just plain good!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025I liked the characters and how they gathered their magical abilities. I was definitely shocked by the way it turned out.
