São Paulo's DJ K is one of the most prolific producers of beat bruxaria, a sinister offshoot of funk brasileiro (commonly referred to as baile funk outside of Brazil). His surreal, lo-fi tracks are filled with blown-out beats, high-frequency noises, and jarring samples, particularly evil cackling. After releasing numerous singles during the early 2020s, his work reached international ears with the 2023 full-length Panico No Submundo.
DJ K began producing music when he was 17, taking a full year to become proficient at using FL Studio before he started sharing his music online. He began playing at Baile do Helipa, the street party of São Paulo's biggest favela. He formed Bruxaria Sound, a collective of over a dozen MCs, producers, and DJs. Fixated on all things dark and sinister, beat bruxaria is harsh, noisy, and chaotic, typically sampling sirens and high frequencies, while its visual aesthetic often uses cartoonish evil clown imagery. DJ K released dozens of tracks during the early 2020s, including collaborations with other scene figures such as DJ Dayeh, MC Delux, DJ Teixeira, and DJ Menor 7. Uganda's Nyege Nyege Tapes, champion of cutting-edge sounds from around the world, released DJ K's full-length debut, Panico No Submundo, in 2023. ~ Paul Simpson
