Inspired by the Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?, an intimate and vivid look at the legendary life of Nina Simone, the classically trained pianist who evolved into a chart-topping chanteuse and committed civil rights activist.

From music journalist and former
Spin and Vibe editor-in-chief Alan Light comes a biography of incandescent soul singer and Black Power icon Nina Simone, one of the most influential, provocative, and least understood artists of our time. Drawn from a trove of rare archival footage, audio recordings and interviews (including Simone's remarkable private diaries), this nuanced examination of Nina Simone’s life highlights her musical inventiveness and unwavering quest for equality, while laying bare the personal demons that plagued her from the time of her Jim Crow childhood in North Carolina to her self-imposed exile in Liberia and Paris later in life.

Harnessing the singular voice of Miss Simone herself and incorporating candid reflections from those who knew her best, including her only daughter, Light brings us face to face with a legend, examining the very public persona and very private struggles of one of our greatest artists.

“Alan Light has written an electrifying, humane, and dimensional biography of one of my favorite artists in the entire world. I learned so much about a woman I admire, the woman whose fiery piano and voice is a powerful reminder of what artists are meant to do!
What Happened, Miss Simone? captures how unique and real she was on every page.”
–Alicia Keys

“A spellbinding portrait of a musical genius, a woman both ahead of her time and of it. In
What Happened Miss Simone?, Alan Light resurrects the High Priestess of Soul with profound sympathy and masterful storytelling.”

As a fan of Nina Simone who never had the opportunity to see her in concert, I cherish her albums. Shattered dreams of becoming a major concert pianist, Nina poured her heart, hurtful and joyful, into her music, captivating her audience. Some believe that there is a fine line between genius and insanity. While Nina certainly was not insane, she was much troubled, displaying outbursts of anger/frustration and inappropriate behavior and pushing those who cared about her away. She searched for the fulfillment but found it unattainable despite her musical career, becoming an icon of the civil rights movement and relationships with men and women who offered guidance, comfort, direction and sometimes hurtful abuse. Her spirit was strong and deep as evidenced by her ability to move those who listened to her fantastic renditions of familiar songs and new material. I found myself wishing very much that she could have found more of what she needed and some joy. Her spirit is so strong and her music so powerful that she will live on forever. May she truly RIP.

I've always enjoyed the music and message of Nina Simone but knew little about her life. This book was a detailed look into her life and influences. I will now listen to her music with a whole new perspective. This book flows effortlessly, good job condensing so much detail without getting bogged down.

Must read bio. I'm a big fan of biographies and after Maya Angelou's "I Why The Changed Bird Sings" and she was talking about Nina and i was curious to learn more about her so decided buy this book. And i'm glad i did Nina's boldness and honesty is what makes this book more deep and insightful. Nina was a firecracker but i fill that's what made her great, her lack of fear and the music Nina music made came directly from her heart and that is beautiful. She loved her people and can see that with the music that she made doing the civil rights movement it was very uplifting and inspiring. Great bio.

I received a copy of this book from bloggingforbooks.com in exchange for an honest review.

The book comes to around 3.5 stars for me. I haven't watched the documentary that inspired this book but I'll certainly check it out now.

This book delves into the life of Nina Simone, although not as in depth as expected. This book is a great primer. As someone who wasn't familiar with Miss Simone's work it gave me a great picture of her life and what she's known for the most. While her activism is heavily discussed in the book I didn't see a whole lot of examples of it in action in this book.

We get a good idea of the struggles Miss Simone faced and her behavior at the time. While comprehensive, it doesn't really answer the question at hand of what happened. There's a lot of speculation thrown around and not a lot of concrete answers.

It's a thorough and captivating look at a very influential woman's life.

I have been a fan of Nina for many years, and this book gave me insight into her mind. I have been to her concerts yet never understood her attitude with the audience that paid a lot of money to come to see her. She always stop to let the audience know how she felt about the USA. At least now I know why. I really did enjoy reading about her. I still listen to her music. Still love her sound.

This is a well-written biography of one of the most influential entertainers of the modern era. It is a book which should be read by anyone interested in the music business, civil rights, and the difficulties of trying to live anything like a normal life against the unreal backdrop of fame and demanding expectations. For anyone looking for a saint, however, it may make for uncomfortable reading. Nina Simone was always walking an uphill climb, and it took its toll.
